Nasiru Idris, governor of Kebbi State, has fired Babangida Sarki, his special adviser on youths, for posting gay content on his Whatsapp status. On Monday, July 10, the governor’s communications aide, Ahmed Idris, confirmed that he has been sacked. Kebbi Gov. The Governor, who was outraged by the offensive occurrence, claimed that the aide violated the moral and social ethos of the Kebbi community, which is predominantly Islamic. The governor warned that his government would not tolerate any actions that harmed the morality and integrity of the people of the state. The Governor further warned other public officials not to make such vile posts on their social media accounts or other public forums.” Over the weekend, Mr. Sarki allegedly posted gay content on his WhatsApp status. When the governor learned of the incident while still in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, he fired Mr Sarki. Sarki’s phone was not hacked, according to the governor’s media aide, who added that the former aide was investigated and “confessed that he uploaded the pictures himself.”

Following the supplementary election held last Saturday, Nasir Idris made a total of 409,225 votes, while his closest rival, General Aminu Bands of the PDP, secured 360,940 votes. The outcome of the election led to jubilations across the state by Idris’ supporters, while PDP supporters were left in shock. During his acceptance speech, Governor-elect Idris promised to lead an all-inclusive government, building on the successes of Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. “Let me use this opportunity to thank our teeming supporters who turned out en masse to vote APC into the office to continue enjoying the dividends of democracy. “To those who we contested with from other parties, you should know we have no other state than Kebbi. You should therefore join hands with us to move the state forward,” he said.
