Nigerian Artistes Who Disappointed US In 2017
There are artistes and there are artiiiistes…. You don’t understand what we mean shey? Well, what we mean is that there are artistes considered as artistes while there are some that are artistes.
Still don’t get it? well, stick with us as we give you this list of artiste that much was expected from this year but didn’t deliver… getting it yet? Kinda? Well, Here it goes…
Kicking it off on this list is Sean tizzle; we know a lot of people are asking is he still singing? Well he is, in fact this year he’s been dropping new songs, doing club appearances and even dropped his Extended Play (EP) dubbed moving forward which featured davido and iceberg slim which we taught will do the trick but unfortunately none of this could bring him the fame he had with previous songs like sho lee, Gentleman and “Loke Loke”.
We know he is carving another niche for his music (we don’t know where yet), we must say we miss him and hope 2018 will be better.
Next is Davolee; the ybnl python as he is often called managed to wet our thirst for his music with his track festival bar but went on a hiatus until mid this year, when he decided to give us cirocing and oya gbeff ft olamide. Though these songs are good enough to an extent, but it seems davolee has found it difficult to make a path for himself and his music as he’s been missing from major events and shows this year. It’s like he’s having difficulties making himself seen despite having the all powerful ybnl records behind him and this makes us wonder what davolee and his team are doing, hopefully 2018 will be different
Also on the list is Toby grey; this delectable songstress has been giving us jams to groove to and we all expected that she will finally be able to take her place in rank with the likes of Tiwa, seyi, yemi and niniola but alas she couldn’t achieve that feet this year. Despite dropping tracks like Konibaje, applaudize, mmm this year, toby grey is still lagging. We know she’s done with school and NYSC so she should have more time to focus on her music but she just seems to disappear from the music scene and just pop back in to drop her song and then disappear. At a show recently, the dj couldn’t find her song and there was no manager to even correct that which is bad for an artiste with her kind of experience; our two bits? she really needs to step up in 2018 except she wants to leave music for marriage or a white collar job.
Next in line is Ice prince zamani; when he launched his SUPERCOOL CAT label he promised us fire and brimstone both from him and his boys but it’s so unfortunate that all we got was a weak fire easily put out by the fire extinguisher. He started the year with a song with bre z titled Stand out, then went on to release Mr Ice ft poe, Magic, owonikoko ft olamide and mr jollof, No mind dem with vannessa mdee, replay and a feature in major laser’s particula…. But with all these songs, ice prince could not live up to his promise as none of these songs has managed to hit the bar of his previous achievements. Ice prince still performs his old songs oleku, aboki etc at shows (not that we mind or not that we mind). We looking forward to 2018 tho, who knows he might get it right or finally go into fashion since he spends money on the things he wears… keeping our fingers crossed.
Next is Olu maintain, Mr maintain was hot last year with tracks like cindarella ft 2baba, nawti remix and excuse my French we automatically thought, this year will be hotter but alas he was as cold the ice in his last video Excuse my french. Well, he managed to drop a collabo with ice prince EWO and we are not impressed. Don’t get it twisted, mr nawti is a brilliant artiste, talented strategist as well, we just don’t know why he dropped off the scene again this year, Maybe he went to hustle, music is not particularly easy…
Next Terry Apala, With his baritone apala voice introducing apala hiphop music and performing at major events all through last year, we thought this guy’s gonna offer us more in 2017 but we are not too sorry to say this is not so…. In 2017, terry went to relax and let q-dot ride on the apala wave with “apala new skool” ( which was a good song by the way) and it left him struggling to catch up. He released 4 songs this year mgbor, bad girl ft bisola, palongo ft musiliu ishola and shape of you; an ed sheeran’s song cover (a genius song) but they were not enough to give him the mileage he had last year. Yes, he was on tour with several artistes but he was still singing songs from last year which didn’t really help his cause (might help financially tho). In short, he had no trendy song this year except shape of u which is already a popular song.
Wale turner is also on this list and without him this list will not be complete. Viral Instagram videos with mad lyrics got him attention and even a record deal last year. His break out tune NO is awesome and we were expecting more. Truly, he released a good one Wa freaking Wu, Faya Faya but it seems like the fire has reduced almost burning out.
We think he should just stick to making Instagram freestyle videos or he should step it up in 2018.
Also on this list is DMW rap star, Dremo; Yes he made it to the list. Dremo drizzy is one of the top favorite new skool rappers around after his display all through last year giving us bars back to back but this year was kinda slow for dremo. From weak lyrics in his songs to waiting around for davido to make moves for him (for collabo or money) , it seems to us that dremo is just kinda enjoying his new found stardom forgetting that he still has lots of work to do to keep it firmly in his grasps. He better gear up or he could very well be on his way out.
Also on the list is Dammy krane; For dammy krane, this year has been filled with a lot of ups and downs what with the alleged fraud case to his social media rants and fights not to talk of weak songs , we wonder how he sleeps at night. With the bundle of talent in his archive, dammy krane should not have any issues having any chart topping song this year, The song which was meant to detail his ordeal PRAYER was at best average as it did nothing to explain his ordeal as it lacked arrangement and depth and the video quality was not up to par. Your body, catch feelings, oluwe and all lacked that playful, careful dammykrane feel. We really hope he gets it back in 2018.
Dominating the list is Korede bello; why is he topping this list? Well, that’s because he dropped a whole album this year and it was average. What’s the big deal about that you’ll say? Well, it’s a big deal because prior to dropping the album he has been giving us chart topping singles which we expect him to replicate in the album. Off the 14 track album (which has ok songs by the way), he had less than 5 songs rock the airwaves so much so that he had to do a remix with lil kesh to get a song out there. Not to talk of his being MIA at events or shows (maybe he performs only at private shows), korede has not been able to replicate his dominance from 2016 this year. Where is the korede who sang one and only, the one that sang romantic, godwin and do like that? Wherever he is, he had better get moving…..
Bad as it may look or sound, this list is not to discriminate, compare or berate any artist as we respect their hustle but this is a wakeup call for them to realize a few of what went wrong from our view…..
