Reports say that INTERPOL has arrested about 3,500 people across Nigeria, Ghana, and other countries as they seized $300 million in addition. On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) declared the end of a transcontinental police operation against online financial crime, resulting in nearly 3,500 arrests and the confiscation of assets valued at $300 million from 34 different countries. Seven categories of cyber-enabled scams were the focus of the six-month Operation HAECHI IV (July–December 2023): voice phishing, romantic scams, online sextortion, investment fraud, money laundering related to illicit online gambling, business email compromise fraud, and e-commerce fraud. According to INTERPOL, the investigators in HAECHI IV collaborated to identify online fraud and used its Global Rapid Intervention of Payments (I-GRIP) stop-payment mechanism, which enables nations to work together to block criminal proceeds, to freeze related bank and virtual asset service provider (VASP) accounts. It further stated that during a two-year manhunt by Korea’s National Police Agency, a prominent online gambling offender was apprehended in Manila as a result of collaboration between Filipino and Korean law enforcement.

A 74-year-old South African woman has taken legal action against her 50-year-old son, accusing him of stealing money from her bag. The incident reportedly occurred on December 6th, around 11 am, prompting the distressed mother to report the matter to the Daveyton police station. According to Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. The elderly complainant alleges that, while she and her son were relaxing at home, she briefly left the room to go to the bathroom. Upon her return, she discovered that an undisclosed amount of money was missing from her handbag, and her son was nowhere to be found. “The 74-year-old female complainant alleges that on December 6, at 11 am, while she and her naughty son, the suspect, were relaxing at home, she quickly went to the bathroom. The mother left behind a handbag containing an undisclosed amount of money “When she (the mother) came back, the son was nowhere to be found. Money was missing from the handbag. The mother said she is sure that the money was stolen by her son,” Lieutenant Colonel Thepa said. The distressed mother firmly believes that her son is responsible for the theft, stating that she confronted him about the missing funds, but he denied any involvement. Adding to the allegations, the elderly woman claimed that the same son had stolen a memory card from her mobile phone and a two-plate stove in the preceding week. “The sick and tired parent registered a case of theft and the perpetrator was arrested and taken to the Daveyton police station. The detained suspect is expected to appear at the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court soon,” the police spokesperson added.

In a statement posted on the Facebook page of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy, the drugs were cleverly concealed within a sack of crayfish.

The statement partly read, “The teenage suspect was intercepted on Wednesday 12th July, during an outward clearance of passengers on Turkish Airlines flight TK 0624. “While being interviewed by operatives, Daberechi claimed he was a student on his way to Cyprus for studies, but upon a thorough search of his luggage, he was found possessing 7.2kg of whitish substance neatly concealed inside a sack of crayfish. A field test of the substance however proved it is Methamphetamine.”

Police arrests customer who fled with N55m Mercedes Benz
Following the public announcement of the incident, the police have successfully apprehended a man who had previously absconded with a Mercedes Benz worth millions of naira. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command had disclosed their ongoing efforts to locate the stolen Mercedes Benz GLB 250, which was taken by an individual posing as a customer in Abuja.
According to additional reports, Mohammed Manga, a car dealer, had raised the alarm after a suspect known as Henry, who disguised himself as a customer, fled with the vehicle during a test drive. Mohammed explained that one of his fellow car dealers had entrusted the Mercedes Benz to Henry, who claimed to be a potential buyer. Unfortunately, trouble arose when Henry requested to test drive the car. To the dismay of the car dealers, Henry swiftly accelerated and escaped with the vehicle, remaining hidden thereafter. Approximately three days later, Mohammed reported the incident to the police. However, there is now news that Henry, the customer-turned-thief, has been apprehended by law enforcement.
