BRT driver faces 16-count charges over Lagos train accident

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is set to press 16 charges of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm against Oluwaseun Osibanjo, the driver of the BRT bus that collided with a moving train in Lagos.

The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of six Lagos State Government staff and passengers of the train, while 96 others were injured to varying degrees. The collision occurred on March 9, when a staff bus collided with a train at the PWD railway crossing in Ikeja and the train dragged the bus and its passengers along the tracks until it came to a halt at Sogunle, a suburb of Ikeja. In a statement released on Friday by the Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, Grace Alo, the BRT driver is faced with 16-count charges. “Upon the receipt and review of the case file by the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), a prima facie case of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm were disclosed against the driver of the Staff bus. “Accordingly, he is to be charged with 6 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous bodily harm. “Both offences are contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” the statement read. According to the statement, charges will be promptly filed against the driver by the Office of the DPP. Nevertheless, his appearance before the Ikeja High Court for trial will be postponed until he has completely recovered from the severe injuries sustained during the accident.

The accident which occurred in Ikeja area of the state claimed the lives of 6 persons and injured 79 others, according to governor Babjide Sanwo-Olu. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, Okhiria said: “According to the information I gathered at the scene of the incident, they said many cars stopped when they got to the level crossing while the Lagos State Staff Bus driver continued moving, which I don’t know why. Maybe the driver thought he could pass before the train got nearer to him. He could not pass, and then the train cr¥shed the bus. The train was coming from Ijoko to Iddo.”

The BRT, which was carrying government workers, was crossing the rail to connect with Ikeja GRA when it was hit by the train travelling from Agege. In a series of images from the accident making rounds on the internet, onlookers gathered to rescue victims of the bus-train crash. The accident has caused heavy traffic on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for motorists travelling from Oshodi around Shogunle to Ikeja-Along.

Tiwa Savage reacts to death of 22-year-old Bamise who boarded BRT bus

Ace singer, Tiwa Savage has reacted to brutal murder of 22-year-old girl, Bamise who lost her life after boarding a BRT bus.

The deceased, a fashion designer, reportedly boarded the BRT bus with number plate 240257 from Chevron bus stop at Lekki to Oshodi, at about 7p.m.
Reports gathered that she was on her way to her elder brother’s place at Idimu. Unfortunately, she never got to her destination and could not be reached on her phone until her remains were found.

The fleeing driver of the BRT bus, Andrew Nice was subsequently arrested in his hideout at Ososa, Ogun state by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Reacting to the sad incident, Tiwa Savage shared a photo of the deceased via her Instagram page which she captioned – “I just don’t know anymore. How can this keep happening?”

Fresh allegation on how the driver of BRT boarded by Bamise molested another lady in his bus surfaces

Twitter user identified as @AdeErema  has shared a story on how the embattled BRT driver, Andrew Nice who is a prime suspect in the death of Bamise, allegedly raped a lady in his bus.

According to the story, some armed robbers tried to rob the lady and in an attempt to evade mayhem, she speedily jumped into his bus and he drove off.
The lady however felt uncomfortable when he started making advances. The man along the line, forced himself on her and raped her.

The netizen further stated that the matter was reported to the police and nothing was done about it.
