Following the unveiling of Mykhailo Mudryk by Chelsea on Sunday, January 15, the club will now have to remove a player from their Champions League squad to register some of their new players. Recall that Mudryk arrived yesterday as Chelsea’s 5th signing in the January transfer window. David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix had all agreed to a deal with the club this month. Chelsea now has more non-homegrown players than are permitted for a Champions League squad. Only 17 non-homegrown players can be registered, while Chelsea now has 18 on their books according to Daily Mail. Should the club’s coach, Graham Potter wish to include his new signings for their round of 16 first-leg showdown with Borussia Dortmund on February 15, he’ll have to remove a player who helped Chelsea top Group E late last year. Some of the players that can easily be omitted are Christian Pulisic, N’Golo Kante, and Denis Zakaria who are all nursing injuries.
Chelsea beat Arsenal to Mykhailo Mudryk signing, presents him to fans
Chelsea has officially announced the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk after swooping in at the last minute.
The 22-year-old winger signed an 8-year deal with the London club worth €100 million. Sources told ESPN that the package comprises a fixed fee of €70m with a further €30m in add-ons, matching the Ukrainian club’s valuation for the transfer of the 22-year-old. Mudryk previously indicated Premier League leaders Arsenal, are his preferred destination in a series of social media posts. Arsenal reportedly made their third offer for Mudryk on Friday, January 13. The bid was believed to comprise around €70m up front with what one source described as “significant add-ons,” although the overall package was still thought to be short of Shakhtar’s €100m valuation. He looked poised to sign for London rivals Arsenal before a last-minute intervention from Chelsea’s recruitment head Paul Winstanley and co-owner Behdad Eghbali on Saturday, January 14, with the pair flying to Turkey to negotiate the deal. Chelsea offered Mudryk a better wage package and a longer contract than what Arsenal tabled. Insiders also said the €30m in bonuses involved in the Chelsea deal are easily achievable. “We are delighted to welcome Mykhailo to Chelsea,” Todd Boehly, Chelsea chairman said. Behdad Eghbali, the co-controlling owner, added “He’s a hugely exciting talent who we believe will be a terrific addition to our squad both now and in the years to come. He will add further depth to our attack and we know he’ll get a very warm welcome to London.” The 22-year-old was in attendance for Chelsea’s game against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge today, January 15, and he was presented to fans. Speaking to the club website, Mudryk said; “I’m so happy to sign for Chelsea. This is a huge club, in a fantastic league and it is a very attractive project for me at this stage of my career. I’m excited to meet my new team-mates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff.” The Ukrainian footballer is now the fifth arrival at Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.
Joao Felix’s red card against Fulham will cost Chelsea £2.1M
The red card shown to Joao Felix on his Premier League debut for Chelsea against Fulham on Thursday, January 13, will cost the London-based club a whooping £2.1M.
Felix was shown a red card over a high tackle on a Fulham defender, Kenny Tete, during the match which the Cottagers won 2-1. This is coming after Chelsea agreed to pay a loan fee of £9m in a 6-month deal with Atletico Madrid for Felix. The London club will also cover Felix’s wages during his spell in west London, estimated to be worth £6m. It is expected the deal will cost Chelsea £15m in the remaining 21 Premier League games, including Thursday’s defeat to Fulham.
Chelsea will be paying £714,286 per game to have Felix as part of their squad as they aim to recover from a disastrous start to the season that has seen them hanging at the 10th position. Following the red card, Felix will now miss the Blues’ Premier League games with Liverpool, Fulham, and West Ham. This three-game suspension for Felix will cost his new club £2,142,858.
Chelsea signs Joao Felix in £10m loan deal
Chelsea has announced the loan signing of Portuguese football star, Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid.
British media reported Chelsea will pay around £10 million ($12m) for Felix who will only stay at the London-based club until the end of this season. The deal has no option to buy as Felix has already signed a new deal at Atletico until 2027. Chelsea only reached a six-month loan deal with Atletico and the Portuguese footballer is expected to go back to the Spanish club in June. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after completing the deal, Felix said; “Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives, so I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge.” The footballer’s exit from Atletico comes three and a half years after a €126m (£112.9m) move from Benfica, which makes him the third most expensive signing in the history of the club.
Guardiola asks Chelsea to give Graham Potter more time after 4-0 defeat
Pep Guardiola has said that Graham Potter needs more time to improve Chelsea after a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, January 8.
Chelsea crashed out of the FA Cup following a poor performance on Sunday, and it was also the second time they’ve lost to Manchester City in two days.
Calls for Potter to be sacked have increased in the last few days as the London-based club has won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions and in that time have fallen to 10th in the Premier League.
However, speaking at a post-match press conference, Guardiola said it would be wrong for Potter who was appointed to the job in September, to be sacked as all managers need time to improve their team.
The Manchester City Coach also said he didn’t need time at Barcelona because he already had Argentine football legend, Lionel Messi.
He said;
“I’d say to Todd Boehly, give Graham Potter time. Give him time. All the managers need time and he is right. I know at big clubs results are important but give him time. What he did at Brighton as outstanding, but all the managers need time he is right. In Barcelona I didn’t need two seasons because I had [Lionel] Messi there.”
FA to investigate alleged homophobic chant during Manchester City’s match against Chelsea
The English Football Association (FA) has announced that it would investigate the alleged homophobic chants during Sunday’s match between Chelsea and Manchester City.
The homophobic chants were heard towards the end of the third-round match at Etihad Stadium, which ended 4-0 in favour of Manchester City.
Reacting to the chants, the FA said in a statement;
“We continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service, as well as the UK Football Policing Unit, in relation to the use of this term.
“Part of our work in this area has been to provide the relevant authorities with impact statements from LGBTQ+ supporters, detailing how chants of this nature affects their experience and feeling of inclusion at football matches, so that a clearer stance and understanding on the chant can be established.
“We stand firmly against all forms of discrimination and we are striving to ensure our game is a safe environment for all, which truly embraces diversity and challenges hateful conduct both on and off the pitch.”
This is not the first time homophobic chants have been heard during an FA Cup match in the past week. It was also heard during Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Everton at Old Trafford on Friday.
Chelsea confirm signing of 18-year-old Brazilian footballer Andrey Santos
Chelsea on Saturday, January 7, announced the signing of young Brazilian Andrey Santos from Vasco da Gama.
Santos who is now Chelsea’s third signing this January, agreed to join the London-based club for £18m.
Speaking to the club’s official website after putting down his signature, the Brazilian footballer said;
“It’s a very big opportunity for me. This is a big club playing in big competitions like the Premier League so I am very excited. The players here are so good and I am very happy to be here.”
The immediate role of the midfielder at Chelsea is not yet known, but with the club’s current injury crisis, he could be called upon by manager Graham Potter.
Santos became Vasco’s youngest player in the 21st century when he made his debut at just 17, following in the footsteps of Paulinho and Philippe Coutinho. Santos netted 11 goals in 43 appearances in 2022, a form that warranted interest from clubs across Europe.
Santos’ signing comes amid Chelsea’s concerted attempt at signing Enzo Fernandez. The Benfica ace has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League following his star performances at the 2022 World Cup, but it’s been reported that the negotiation has not been fruitful following Benfica’s demand.
Chelsea to sign Benoit Badiashile for £34 million
Chelsea has reportedly reached an agreement with Dutch club, Monaco, to sign Benoit Badiashile for £34 million.
The Athletic reported that the two clubs have reached a “total agreement” for the transfer of the 21-year-old French footballer, and the London-based club is now scheduling his medical ahead of an official announcement.
Badiashile who is expected to sign a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge after completing his medicals, is Chelsea’s second signing of the January window. The Blues had signed Ivorian striker Datro Fofana from Molde for a reported £10 million.
Chelsea currently sits ninth in the Premier League after 15 games and they will be hoping that Badiashile, along with other January signings, can give them fresh hope in the race for Champions League football.
It is also speculated that Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos and Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernandez are on the English club’s radar.
Frank Lampard reveals he tried to sign Erling Haaland before being sacked by Chelsea
Everton coach Frank Lampard has revealed that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was one of the players he tried to sign while still in charge at Chelsea.
Addressing reporters ahead of Everton’s match against City today, December 31, Lampard disclosed that Haaland who was playing at Salzburg at the time has always been an amazing player.
He said;
“[Haaland] is an amazing player and the ultimate top-level players generally can do what he does in a top-level league. I coached against him in a pre-season game when he was playing for Salzburg. I tried to sign him for Chelsea and it was not to be.
“It was clear in our pre-match preparation what this boy was. Fair play to him. We are going against him and I respect those at the top of their game. I watched the World Cup final with [Kylian] Mbappe and [Lionel] Messi and Haaland has got himself in that bracket at a very young age.”
Lampard’s disclosure might be a bitter pill to swallow for most Chelsea fans, as the west London side has struggled for consistently prolific strikers for several years.
Chelsea agree to a €12m transfer for Molde forward Fofana
Highly-rated Ivorian forward David Datro Fofana will be coming over to Stamford Bridge in January, as Chelsea has reportedly agreed to a €12 million (£11m/$12m) deal with Molde for him.
Fofana who gave a nod to the deal on his 20th birthday, had signed a 4-year deal with Norwegian football club, Molde in February 2021. He scored 24 goals in 65 appearances.
Throwing more light on the deal, popular Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano reported that there is a “full agreement between all parties” regarding Fofana’s move to England and that medical tests in west London will now take place.
Fofana who is now preparing to take on a new challenge with the Premier League heavyweights, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of former Molde stars that have gone before him in England.
