Driver dragged to court for using company’s money to play sport betting

Driver dragged to court for using company's money to play bet

A 26-year-old driver identified as Samuel Meyiwa has been charged with embezzling company money for sports betting. The charges were brought before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court in Lagos this Thursday. The Lagos State Police arraigned Meyiwa, who was employed as a driver for a company in Bariga, accusing him of using company funds for sports betting activities. According to the prosecutor, Meyiwa had been employed in March and was entrusted with the responsibility of selling sachet water with a company truck. Shockingly, he allegedly diverted a portion of the proceeds from his daily sales to fuel his gambling habit, unbeknownst to his employer. The complainant revealed that Meyiwa’s suspicious activities came to light in October when he failed to return N88,000 from the sale of sachet water, claiming that customers owed him. This deceptive behaviour persisted, and in November, Meyiwa reportedly drove off with sachet water worth N300,000. Instead of fulfilling his responsibilities, he allegedly used the funds for sports betting and, after losing, absconded. Efforts to locate Meyiwa proved futile until he was spotted working in another company, leading to his subsequent arrest by the police. The prosecutor, Oriabure, detailed the charges against Meyiwa, stating that the alleged offense occurred between March and November 2023 at Okusanya Street, off Adebayo Road, Bariga, in violation of Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. The charge read; “That you Samuel Meyiwa, sometime March to November 2023 at Bariga in the Yaba Magisterial District did steal the sum of three hundred thousand naira cash from Freedom Pure Water Company situated at No 10 NG Okusanya street off Adebayo Road, Bariga, where you were employed as a driver and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.” During the court proceedings, Meyiwa pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge. In response, the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties required to provide the same amount. The case was subsequently adjourned till January 25, 2024, for trial.

A Kenyan woman, Mary Waithera, found herself before the Makadara Law Courts facing charges related to a breach of peace for killing her mother’s four chickens and threatening to set herself ablaze. In her statement to the court, she expressed remorse for her actions and attributed the outburst to the depression she has been grappling with since losing her job. According to court records, the confrontation unfolded when Waithera returned home in an inebriated state and engaged in a quarrel with her mother, accusing her of neglect since the loss of her job in 2020. The accused lamented feeling unloved in her own home, escalating the argument into chaos. Amidst the confrontation, Waithera reportedly dismissed the intervention of her young brother, took a matchbox, and retreated to her room, where she threatened to set herself ablaze. Distraught, her mother and brother pleaded with her to reconsider, eventually alerting the authorities, who promptly arrested Waithera. During her court appearance, Waithera’s emotional state was palpable as she recounted the distress that led to the regrettable incident. Her brother, listed as a witness in the case, will only testify if she chooses to deny the charges before conviction and sentencing.

Father drags sons’ to court for stealing his properties when he travelled abroad

Nigerian man Ade Olowopopo has initiated legal proceedings against his two sons, Kunle and Mayowa, alleging that they assaulted their sister, Bisi Olowopopo, and stole his properties while he was abroad. The alleged incidents occurred at the family residence in Lakwe Lekki, Lagos State. The suspects were arraigned at the Ebute Metta Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a five-count charge that includes assault, breaking and entering, stealing, and posing a threat to life. According to the prosecution counsel, Paul Ugorji, the defendants committed the crimes in 2019 while the plaintiff was abroad. During the purported incident, the brothers reportedly forcibly entered their father’s compound, assaulted their older sister, and drove her out. Additionally, they allegedly took a block molding machine and a N7 million Toyota 4Runner Jeep without their father’s consent. The courtroom revelations unveiled an underlying family dispute, with information emerging that the sons belong to Olowopopo’s second wife, with whom he has disagreements, particularly regarding the boys’ paternity. Paul Ugorji outlined that the accused violated several sections of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Laws, including Sections 411, 172, 287, 56, and 168(d). The charges read, “That you, Adekunle Olowopopo, 35, and Mayowa Olowopopo, 33, sometime in 2019 at Lakwe Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit a felony, to wit assault, stealing, breaking and entry, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and thereby committed an offense punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.” Magistrate O. M. Ajayi accepted the petition and granted the accused sons bail. They were each released on a bail amount of N40,000 with one responsible surety.

Abuja Court of Appeal sacks Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

Court of Appeal sacks Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

The Abuja Court of Appeal on Friday sacked governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State from office, according to a report from Daily Post. This decision confirmed an earlier ruling by the State Election Petitions Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, which had nullified Yusuf’s victory on September 20, 2023.

Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf sacked by Court of Appeal

Abba Kabir Yusuf. The tribunal declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state. The Tribunal invalidated 165,663 votes cast for Yusuf under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) because they lacked the necessary signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This action reduced the governor’s votes to 853,939 while his APC rival, Nasir Ganuwa, retained 890,705 votes. Yusuf disagreed with the tribunal’s decision, calling it “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice.” He appealed the ruling at the court, with his legal representative, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, requesting the tribunal’s judgment to be overturned. Olanipekun argued against the tribunal’s decision regarding the unsigned ballot papers, stating it was unprecedented for an election to be annulled solely due to the lack of signatures on the back of ballot papers. He highlighted this as the first instance where a political party filed a case without involving its candidate in the petition, and yet, the candidate was declared the winner. However, Akin Olujimi SAN, representing the APC, countered Olanipekun’s argument. He affirmed that the Appeal Court explicitly stated that the absence of signatures on ballots constituted electoral malpractice.
