Actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot has been re-elected as the lawmaker representing Surulere 1 constituency of Lagos state.

Elliot who was first elected as representative of the constituency in 2015, polled 17,837 votes to defeat his closest rival, Adebayo Bode of the Labour Party who polled 7,822 votes. Thompson Sulaimon Abolaji of the Peoples Democratic Party came third with 1,045 votes. Sharing a photo of the result sheet, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s media aide, Jubril Gawat insinuated that actor, Olumide Oworu’s name was used to rile up the mob for Labour Party votes in the area.

Olumide Oworu had revealed on Thursday that his campaign rally, which took place on Tuesday at Iponri in Surulere, was invaded by thugs. In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, the incumbent Surulere Constituency Representative and All Progressives Congress candidate referred to the attackers as ‘overzealous political jobbers posing as party supporters.’ olumide oworu Statement from Desmond Elliot Condemning the Attack “Violent attack by Hoodlums on Labour Party supporters in Surulere The attention of the Media Office of Hon. The politician has taken to his page to announce that he has installed brand new high-capacity transformers in his constituency, Surulere so as to give electricity to people who have been deprived of light for years. The recipients of the transformers delivered by Desmond Elliot include Somade Crescent, Main street, Clegg street, James Robertson, Akerele, Martins Street, and Tafawa Balewa. He wrote; “I am excited to announce that new high-capacity transformers have been installed in Surulere, bringing reliable electricity to communities that have long needed it. The new transformers include: Somade Crescent; Methodist Church by Small London; 300Kva Main Street between Barracks and Tejuosho; 500Kva Clegg Street, Inside Fire Brigade, 500Kva James Robertson Junction; 500Kva Akerele by Havana Hospital; 500Kva Martins Street; 500Kva Oke-Ona/Ladele Dada/Alawode Transformer; 500Kva (Surulere 2) Tafawa Balewa Crescent; 500Kva”.

The Far From Home TV-series actor took to his page to declare his intentions to run for a position with his senior colleague Desmond Elliot in the Lagos state House of Assembly, Surulere constituency 1, on the ticket of the Labour Party (LP). According to Oworu Olumide, the youth in Nigeria have grown and developed voices that are now heard and have all joined in the decision-making in the country. This announcement by Oworu has caused a stir on social media because his senior colleague, Desmond Elliot, currently holds the position under the All Progressives Congress (APC), and is running for a third term. Oworu announced….“It is with a sense of honour and duty that I announce my candidacy for membership of The Lagos State House of Assembly – Surulere Constituency 1 on the platform of The Labour Party.
