21-year-old Engineering undergraduate bags 35-year jail sentence for funding his flashy lifestyle through robbery

A 21-year-old engineering student from Bulawayo Polytechnic, Lenny Ryan Mupande, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for his involvement in a series of armed robberies across Zimbabwe. Mupande and his accomplice, Bezel Chirova, confessed that societal pressures and the allure of emulating the extravagant lifestyles of celebrities and influencers on social media were the driving forces behind their criminal activities. Mupande’s criminal spree included the theft of ZAR13,390 from Mukuru, two iPhone 7s, $998.66 from Chicken Inn drive-through, a cellphone, handcuffs, and a baton stick from Athens Supermarket in Cowdray Park, and $1,850 from a registered money agency, Tottengram Investments.

In court, Mupande expressed remorse for his actions, attributing his involvement in armed robberies to peer pressure and a desire to mirror the ostentatious lives of his well-off peers and social media influencers. He said; “I committed the crimes because of peer pressure. I was envious of the lives of my peers and the lives of social media influencers. I wanted to be like them, I wanted to mimic their lives, the food they ate, their dressing, and the drinks they enjoyed.” Chirova, in his defense, maintained that he was coerced by Mupande into participating in these criminal activities. He claimed that Mupande relentlessly pressured him into being a part of the criminal plan, asserting that it was not his intention to commit these crimes. “It was not my intention to commit these crimes. It was Mupande who pressured me into committing these crimes. He was persistent in getting me to be part of his plan,” Chirova said.

Ohanaeze begs British Govt to reduce jail term for Ekweremadu

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has pleaded with the British government to reduce the jail term given to former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Recall that the former lawmaker was jailed over organ trafficking charges. He was convicted alongside his wife and a United Kingdom-based medical doctor, Obinna Obeta.

Ohanaeze begs British Govt to reduce jail term for Ekweremadu

The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo receives British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr Richard Montgomery at the National Secretariat of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Enugu Speaking when the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr Richard Montgomery at the National Secretariat of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Enugu, Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, said that Ndigbo would be happy should Ekweremadu’s jail term be reduced. He said: “There is a very important issue that we have to bring to your attention. You’re aware of the case of Nigeria’s former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who was convicted and is in jail in your country. He’s from this state and we all know he got entangled in that unfortunate incident because he wanted to save his daughter. “He is already serving a jail term. It’s unfortunate, but it has happened. I testified for him during the trial and in fact, the judge mentioned my name two times while delivering his judgment. “But we are using the opportunity of your visit to ask for leniency for him so that he doesn’t spend the number of years in jail. We have accepted the judgment, but are saying if there’s anything that could be done to reduce the jail term. “He’s from this area and if we don’t bring this thing up as Ohanaeze or from us here, concerning this important son of Igboland, it wouldn’t be nice of us. We are quite overwhelmed”. Earlier, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu appealed for the setting up of a British Visa office in the southeast region. He stated that the zone accounts for over sixty per cent of Nigerians travelling to the United Kingdom, stressing that it was unfair that they were subjected to travelling to Abuja and Lagos to procure their visas. Iwuanyanwu who recalled the long relationship between Nigeria and the British government, also appealed for bilateral collaboration to grow and develop the economy of the southeast region. He identified insecurity that has now culminated in Monday’s sit-at-home as part of the challenge threatening the economy of the region, explaining that the new leadership of Ndigbo was working hard to overcome it. Iwuanyanwu said that the Ohanaeze Ndigbo would soon set up a business council of prominent businessmen and assured that it would like to collaborate with the office of the commission for mutual economic benefits. He said that the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has placed a premium on education and agriculture to engage her teeming youths and reduce social malaise in the region. In his remarks, Montgomery, who said he was on a tour of the southeast, added that the visit would afford him opportunity to interact on areas of mutual collaboration with the British government. He said that the British government would continue to advocate for peace in the country, stressing that it was delighted with the efforts by the Igbo in the development of Nigeria.

Dani Alves loses chance to get out of jail

Former Barcelona player Dani Alves who is currently being investigated by Spanish authorities in a sexual assault case, will have to remain in jail as a court on Monday, June 12, denied his request to be freed on bail. Alves was provisionally detained in January after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 30. He has denied wrongdoing and said sex with the accuser was consensual. Dani Alves loses chance to get out of jail Dani Alves at a match for Mexican side Pumas UNAM. Source: Getty A judge ordered that the former Barcelona defender be jailed without bail after analyzing the initial probe by authorities and hearing testimony from Alves, the alleged victim, and witnesses. A trial date has not been set. A Barcelona court ruled on Monday that Dani Alves remains a flight risk and should remain in jail until the investigation is concluded. The court previously denied a similar request by the footballer’s defence team in May. Alves’ lawyers had tried to discredit testimony by the alleged victim and other witnesses by presenting security camera footage showing that Alves and the victim were flirting with each other at the nightclub. But the court said in its ruling on Monday that the flirting should not “in any way justify an eventual sexual assault.”

They said Alves and his family had plans to live in Barcelona, but the court dismissed the argument because his children were only registered as residents a few weeks ago. Under Spain’s sexual consent law passed last year, sexual assault takes in a wide array of crimes from online abuse and groping to rape, each with different possible punishments. A case of rape can receive a maximum sentence of 15 years. 40-year-old Alves won 42 soccer titles, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil. He played in his third World Cup last year in Qatar.

“I don’t want to go back to Nigeria” – Victim reacts as UK court sentences Ekweremadu, others to jail

GistReel

Ike Ekweremadu

Former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu, has been sentenced to nine years and eight months imprisonment for plotting to harvest a man’s kidney, along with his wife, Beatrice, who was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment. A medical doctor, Dr Obinna Obeta, was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. They were found guilty of conspiring to arrange the travel of a young man with the intention of exploiting him for his body part. In a letter addressed to the court, the victim revealed his shock upon discovering the reason for the trip was to harvest his organs to give to Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia. He said he was approached with an opportunity to work in the UK, something he had “always dreamed of but never thought would happen.” The victim said he was lured to the United Kingdom under the pretense of job opportunity in the country. He added that he could not return to Nigeria because he worries for his safety. The victim claimed someone visited his father in Nigeria and asked him to get the victim, his son, to drop the case. “He [Dr Obinna Obeta] did not tell me he brought me here for this reason, he did not tell me anything about this. I would have not agreed to any of this, my body is not for sale,” the victim said. He told the police he did not want to claim compensation from the “bad people” as it would be “cursed and bad luck”. The victim also revealed his humble background in a Lagos village where he is the oldest of seven siblings living in a home without electricity or running water. He was forced to become a street trader full time, moving to the city to provide for his family when his father fell ill with a heart problem. He sold mobile phone accessories from a wheelbarrow making at most £7 a day and as little as 50p. The victim’s impact statement was read in court on Friday. He claimed his body parts were “not for sale”, and he would not have agreed to the trip if he had known the true reason for it. The victim’s safety concerns remain, as he fears for his life if he were to return to Nigeria.
