Court of Appeal sacks Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

The Abuja Court of Appeal on Friday sacked governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State from office, according to a report from Daily Post. This decision confirmed an earlier ruling by the State Election Petitions Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, which had nullified Yusuf’s victory on September 20, 2023.

Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf sacked by Court of Appeal

Abba Kabir Yusuf. The tribunal declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state. The Tribunal invalidated 165,663 votes cast for Yusuf under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) because they lacked the necessary signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This action reduced the governor’s votes to 853,939 while his APC rival, Nasir Ganuwa, retained 890,705 votes. Yusuf disagreed with the tribunal’s decision, calling it “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice.” He appealed the ruling at the court, with his legal representative, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, requesting the tribunal’s judgment to be overturned. Olanipekun argued against the tribunal’s decision regarding the unsigned ballot papers, stating it was unprecedented for an election to be annulled solely due to the lack of signatures on the back of ballot papers. He highlighted this as the first instance where a political party filed a case without involving its candidate in the petition, and yet, the candidate was declared the winner. However, Akin Olujimi SAN, representing the APC, countered Olanipekun’s argument. He affirmed that the Appeal Court explicitly stated that the absence of signatures on ballots constituted electoral malpractice.

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) and the police have been given an interim order by a federal high court in Kano restraining them from arresting Abdullahi Ganduje over alleged dollar bribe videos. Recall that the agency on Thursday invited the former governor, Ganduje, to appear before it next week to have the opportunity to clear his name in the ongoing investigation.

Immediate past governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje Other parties restrained from taking action against Ganduje are the inspector-general of police (IGP), Kano commissioner of police, the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the attorney-general of the federation, and the attorney-general of Kano. In 2018, Daily Nigerian, an online newspaper, published a video of Ganduje allegedly receiving bundles of dollars from contractors, which he stuffed into his “babanriga”, a traditional outfit. The newspaper said the former governor requested $5 million as a bribe from the contractors who recorded the video. In the interim order issued on Friday, A.M Liman, the judge, said the directive would remain in effect pending the hearing and determination of the substantive motion. Hemba, a counsel to Ganduje, had filed the suit. The order reads: “Restraining the respondents, whether by themselves or acting through their officers, men, operatives, agents, or any persons or group of persons howsoever described, from harassing, intimidating, detaining the applicant or his children, or any member of his family, or any appointee who served under the administration of the applicant, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive originating motion. “An order restraining the respondents, whether by themselves or acting through their officers, men, operatives, agents, privies, or any persons or group of persons howsoever described, from harassing, arresting, inviting, or detaining the applicant or his children, or any member of his family, or any appointee who served under his administration, or forcefully taking over properties of his children or any member of his family, or any appointee who served under his administration, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive originating motion.”

Kano anti-corruption agency invites Ganduje over alleged ‘Dollar Videos’

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) says it has invited former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, to appear before it over alleged dollar bribe videos. The chairman of the commission, Mr Muhuyi Rimingado, confirmed this to newsmen in Kano on Thursday.
Rimingado said that the commission was expecting Ganduje to appear before it next week to have the opportunity to clear his name in the ongoing investigation.

Kano anti-corruption agency invites Ganduje over alleged ‘Dollar Videos’

Immediate past governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje “I have signed a letter to invite him for questioning at the commission next week because this is what the law says and we will provide ample opportunity for him to defend himself. “There is what the law provides; the law is coercive in nature, it compels obedience. The law doesn’t lobby you to come and do certain things. “There are procedures and we will follow all the necessary steps to do what is needful,” he assured. The PCACC chairman also reacted to an allegation by the Coalition for Northern Civil Society Groups that the commission started the investigation so as to ridicule the former governor and stop him from getting federal appointments. He simply said that the “fact speaks for itself”. Rimingado said that since the video came out in 2018, the commission had indicated its intention to investigate, but since the governor then enjoyed immunity, there was a limit to what the law allowed the commission to do in that regard. “This is why on my return as the chairman few weeks ago and the fact that the former governor no longer enjoys immunity, we decided to reopen the investigation and give the former governor the opportunity to clear himself or otherwise. ”Moreso, as the videos have continued to cause the state and citizens of the state ridicule across the globe,” Rimingado said. He called on all citizens of the state that had useful information that would further help the investigation to come forward, promising that such information will be treated confidentially. Rimingado also appealed to residents of the state and civil society organisations to support the commission to root out corruption in the state. He urged them to do so by providing necessary information on any case of corrupt practices, promising that the commission would ensure justice, regardless of whoever was involved.

"Ganduje chased me out of Kano for three and half years" ― Kwankwaso alleges

Former governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso and the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Friday, alleged that the immediate past Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, chased him out of the state for three and half years. Ganduje was the deputy governor to Kwankwaso, the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in the February 25 election but has fallen apart in recent years. Ganduje was accused by Rabiu Kwankwaso of appropriating government properties for himself and members of his family.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP The duo were summoned by President Bola Tinubu over an ongoing demolition in the State after which Kwankwaso while addressing questions from State House correspondents claimed that most of the buildings demolished were illegally acquired by the Ganduje administration and that President Tinubu was shocked when he briefed him on the true picture of what led to the present demolition. He said: “The President was shocked. Are you not shocked that somebody will sell University? Are you not shocked that he demolished the only university? Daula Hotel, for those of you who are in Kano, you know the old Daula, demolished to zero and that is a faculty under the University of Science and Technology. He demolished that one. Are you not shocked? The immediate past Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, “The President was shocked. He didn’t know. He even mentioned that he talked to somebody to go and find out for him. But when I told him, I said you are a Muslim, very soon you are going for Sallah. How can you go under that circumstance and pray in that place? And even the Triumph place he is talking about, you are journalists. You should be angry because that’s your constituency, he demolished completely and put shops everywhere.” “You see the governor is doing what we campaigned with. I wanted to be president, I campaigned also. And I went to Kano and told them that these places, schools, in fact, most of our schools in Kano were being encroached on. And it is our policy to make sure that the encroached are returned to them. We will not allow anybody either local government chairman or Governor to go sell.” Responding to this, Ganduje claimed that four properties that were demolished by Governor Yusuf were erected based on a public-private partnership arrangement.
