Kidnappers kill pastor after collecting N1m ransom in Kogi

Kidnappers kill pastor after collecting N1m ransom in Kogi

A pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Kogi State, Pastor David Musa, has been killed by kidnappers after being abducted from his farm in Obajana, Lokoja Local Government Area, on Saturday, November 11, 2023. According to reports, the pastor was seized by unknown assailants, only to meet a grim fate even after his family and church diligently followed the kidnappers‘ demands. Mary, a distressed member of the church, disclosed that the abduction occurred on the aforementioned day, leaving the pastor’s wife anxiously awaiting his return.

As night fell, the alarm was raised when the pastor failed to return home, prompting church members and concerned residents to initiate a search operation on his farm. “The pastor went to his farm that ugly day. So, his wife was waiting for him to return home, but she didn’t see her husband. When night fell, the wife raised an alarm, and the church people, including residents of the community, went to his farm to search for him,” she explained. “It was then that they discovered that the pastor had been kidnapped. The abductors got in touch with the family, demanding N20,000,000. Since the church and the family could not raise such an amount of money, they pleaded with the kidnappers, and they reduced the ransom to N1,000,000. “The kidnappers insisted that, when they are bringing the money, they should come along with recharge cards, chicken, and many alcoholic drinks for their consumption. Two of the church members were sent to deliver the money and the items requested by the kidnappers. “When they went to the kidnappers’ den, they saw our pastor alive. They now instructed our pastor and the two other church members who brought the money to start going home. “Unfortunately, they later called the pastor to come back, and he did as instructed because he knew that there was no way he could run from their place since his abductors were holding sophisticated weapons. “When he was coming back to them, they immediately shot at him, and he died. That was how they later brought his lifeless body back to Obajana. This incident has thrown the entire church and the community into mourning.”  Expressing their sorrow, the church posted a message on their social media platform, confirming the tragic end to Pastor Musa’s ordeal. “It is with a heavy heart, but in total submission to the will of God, that I write to inform you that the abductors of our brother, Pastor Musa David, have killed him after collecting a ransom of one million naira last night. Let our prayers be with the family, the church, and the DCC in this trying moment.”

Dino Melaye, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 11 Kogi governorship poll, says he would run an inclusive government if elected into office. In a statement released on Saturday by Melaye’s media team, the PDP candidate spoke during a visit to the palace of Abdulrazaq Isa Koto, Ohimege Igu of Koton Karfi.

Dino Melaye: "I’ll run Kogi with fear of God"

The former senator representing Kogi West said he would run the state with “fear of God” if elected. Melaye added that he would be “a governor for all” regardless of ethnic group. “As you are aware, His Royal Majesty, in the space of 4 years as senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I did 19 projects in your Kogi LGA. I have a very special relationship with Kogi and by the grace of God, when elected as governor, I will focus attention on the needs of our people, particularly the ecological challenges in this area,” the PDP candidate said. “We are not unaware that the major business in this area is agriculture, trading and transportation. We shall make these ventures the focus of our administration by providing incentives that will encourage our people. “I will be a Kogi governor that will govern our state with the fear of God. I will run an all-inclusive governance not as an Igala, Ebira, Okun, Kakanda, Bassa, Koto or Nupe governor but as a governor for all under the guidance of the Almighty God. “I congratulate you as the leader of the Kogi west traditional rulers and I pray that under your leadership, Kogi West will produce a governor. I, therefore, seek your blessings as we go into the polls.” On April 16, Melaye won the PDP primary for the Kogi gubernatorial election, defeating Idoko Ilonah, his closest challenger, by 189 votes. He will face Ahmed Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election scheduled to take place on November 11.

63 polling units results canceled in four Kogi LGAs

INEC cancels the results of 63 polling units in Kogi which were plagued by thuggery and failed BVAS during Saturday’s elections.

63 polling units results canceled in four Kogi LGAs

Among the affected Local Government Areas (LGAs) were Okehi, Umala, Ulama-Boro, and Ibaji. Okehi LGA was hit the hardest, as the State Government had recently dug up some of its roads to prevent criminal activity in the area. During the collation of results at the Kogi Collation Centre, Dr. Emeka Oguju, the Okehi Collation Officer, revealed that the results of 31 polling units across four wards were cancelled due to thuggery, with political thugs stealing voting materials and carting away ballot boxes, resulting in the cancellation of 12,037 votes. “In most affected polling units, there was violence caused by political thugs, who invaded the units and disrupted the entire process,” he lamented. Dr. L. Adang, the Collation Officer for Umala Local Government Area, also reported to the State Collation Officer at the Situation Room at INEC State Office that 16 wards were impacted by thuggery. As a result, 9,558 votes in the affected polling units had to be cancelled. Similarly, Dr. Adamu Wakili, the Collation Officer for Olama-Boro LGA, revealed during his results presentation that 3,582 votes in five polling units had to be cancelled due to thuggery and non-functional BVAS. “Aside from the activities of political thugs that affected the election in our area, we had an issue with one BVAS which couldn’t function because of the remoteness of the community it was taken to. “We tried to see whether it could work, but we couldn’t and only five units in that community were affected. We have reported that to the REC,” he said. Additionally, Prof. Dauda Tanko, the Collation Officer for Ibaji Local Government Area, reported that due to incidents of thuggery, the results of 11 polling units in the region were cancelled. Tanko did not disclose the exact number of votes impacted by the cancellations but indicated that the activities of political thugs affected four Registration Areas.

Why we may cancel results in Kogi — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may invalidate election results from areas that have experienced crises during the presidential and National Assembly elections in Kogi. 2023 Elections: INEC may cancel results in Kogi This warning comes in response to recent reports of electoral disturbances in several local government areas, including Anyigba and Dekina in the Kogi East, Mopa in the Kogi West, and parts of Kogi Central, where it is alleged that voting materials were stolen by thugs. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Kogi state, Dr. Hale Longpet, issued a warning while reacting to the crises that erupted in some parts of the state. “You know the electoral law says that where there are disruptions to the process, the result will be cancelled, the very particular units’ results will be cancelled. “The issues initially were only in the Kogi East and Central but I can’t tell exactly where and where in the state have been affected until the results are brought by the electoral officers. “We understood that because of the violence, those affected areas couldn’t conclude election there. “I’m shocked that people can go to that level and disrupt something that everybody should have enjoyed. “Election is a peaceful and willful thing that people are offered to freely participate. “Again, if people are given assurance that everyone will enjoy a pleasant experience, why then should we have thugs invading the whole town or the local government, disrupting the conduct of the elections?” he asked. Longpet said, “This is very sad and shocking when you look at the loss of lives involved.” He emphasized that participating in an election should not be viewed as an act of war. He added that if someone is not interested in voting, they are not obligated to do so. The REC further stated that those who are genuinely interested in improving their communities should exercise their right to vote and not be hindered from doing so. He also shared that he personally accompanied security officials on a motorcade to monitor the election process, from Adankolo to Crucial, through Kabawa and Falele. “Yet in all these places, we didn’t see anyone angry but people were all smiling and casting their votes peacefully,” he added.
