"I was a London tailor before skit making, I've been funny from birth" – Carter Efe

Renowned Nigerian skit creator and musician, Oderhwo Joseph Efe, widely recognized as Carter Efe, discloses his background hustle as a tailor before achieving stardom. In a recent appearance on the Hip TV show “Trending,” hosted by reality star Kim Oprah, Carter Efe shared insights into his journey from being a tailor to becoming a notable figure in the world of skit making and music. The ‘Machala‘ singer emphasized that his comedic talent was natural, expressing a lifelong love for art that led him to pursue tailoring at a certain stage in his life. Carter Efe speaks on humble beginnings, from being a tailor to making skits

“I have been funny right from birth. I’ve been doing stand-up comedy since I was in school. During break time, I would just stand in front of the class and start making people laugh. “I was a London tailor, ‘Obioma’, before I ventured into skit making. I love art. For example, I edit my skits by myself. I told my dad one day that I wanted to learn tailoring. He said what of my education and I insisted that I want to learn tailoring because I love creativity. I didn’t even spend up to six months before learning how to sew. “When I was learning tailoring, sometimes I would lie to my boss that I was sick and go to shoot a skit. Then I will come back in the afternoon. He still punished me. He would tell me to kneel. I would kneel till the end of the day. “Until one day, Broda Shaggi posted a challenge on Instagram: he said everybody should vibe to a song. Back then I was in Delta State. I said let me just vibe to it and I vibed to the song then I came out first. I won PS5. “Shaggi said I should come to Lagos to receive my prize. When I collected the PS5, I sold it for about N300,000. Then I decided to stay back in Lagos. I was using the N300,000 for transport fares to go to locations to shoot my skit. I was staying with one of my friends then.”

He said that his Nigerian instinct quickly kicked in and he pursued the bike man with all his might. The man revealed that he was getting close to the biker, who thought he wouldn’t pursue him, when he threw away the phone and rode faster. His tweet read: “A whole Lagos street boy like me… London boys nearly run me street this morning. While at the Bus stop checking my map to see when the next bus 🚌 will come, a guy on a bicycle 🚲 snatched my phone “Cheers mate”, and sped off. It’s today I know that I still have mad reflex. The way I ran after him on the main road ehn, even the cars had to stop… he thought he was sleek by not using the bicycle lane, thinking I would give up once he infiltrates the cars on the main road. The moment he realised I was very close to catching up with him and I was going to use my umbrella on his head, he dropped the phone on the road and zoomed off. It’s why I will never trust all these South Eastern London boys who go about with durags and face covers on bicycles. Anyways, I will soon leave this London for you people. 😔” See post below:

Lagos to UK N1.9m, Cotonou to London 5 times cheaper

Lagos to UK N1.9m, Cotonou to London 5 times cheaper

A Nigerian lady with Tiktok handle @Grandma Shasha has drawn attention to a staggering disparity in flight costs between Lagos and Cotonou routes to London. According to her TikTok video, it appears to be more cost-effective for Nigerian travelers to opt for flights from Cotonou, Benin Republic, to London rather than the more conventional Lagos-London route.

Photo credit: Grandma Shasha  Source: Tiktok The lady posted a screenshot of flight costs for the Lagos-London route, which showed the price soaring above N1.9 million (Nigerian Naira). However, the same flight from Cotonou to London was priced at a significantly lower N374,000, making it a substantially cheaper alternative. In her words; “Traveling requires a lot of money and careful planning, after your visa is granted, your next stop is flight booking. Be a smart traveller. For me, it will be a lot easier to go to Cotonou and board the flight since it is visa-free.” Interestingly, a recent analysis conducted by Business Day Newspaper has supported Grandma Shasha’s claims. Part of the analysis reads; “A flight from South Africa to London or Istanbul, despite the long distance, has always been cheaper than flights from Lagos to London or Istanbul, on the same airline and same date. The difference in ticket prices has made a number of Nigerian passengers fly from Accra, Ghana to London, Canada and other frequently visited destinations in a bid to cut costs.” @one user said; “Please help me check Lagos to Dubai.” @UAP said; “Check Cotonou to Kigali please.” @user1474741204360 said; “Please which countries are cheaper for vacation?” @Larrystrings commented: “You don cast it, them go increase the price.” @Mohammed Dabo said; “Can you do to Canada please?” @Anita Viver said; “If they increase Cotonou price it’s to go to Togo.” See below; @grandmaoflagos Traveling requires a lot of money and careful planning, after your visa is granted, your next stop is flight booking,Be a smart traveller#fyp #visa #travel #japa ♬ original sound – GRANDMASHASHA

Source: Instagram The delay could have resulted in a hefty fine of £150,000 if it lasted for 30 minutes. According to the security official, Burna Boy was prepared to take the stage when one of his team members, who was in charge of the stadium lights, encountered difficulties operating the equipment using his laptop. The lack of a backup laptop exacerbated the situation, as the London stadium operates under a strict curfew. If the concert exceeded the designated time limit, Burna Boy would have been required to halt his performance, and his promoter would have been obliged to pay a fine of £150,000 for every additional 30 minutes that they exceeded the deadline. A Nigerian man named Nnamdi, who was attending a course on International Sports Law, shared a video in which the chief security officer explained the incident. Nnamdi commended Burna Boy for his insistence on perfection rather than compromising with a substandard stage setup. In the video, the security official emphasized Burna Boy’s meticulousness and how he refused to go on stage until the stadium backdrops were functioning correctly. He wrote; “Burna such a perfectionist. Having a lecture at the London stadium and the head of security explaining how Burna refused to go on stage on time because the stadium back drops were not working properly risking £150,000 fine for each extra 30.” See below; Burna such a perfectionist. President Bola Tinubu has moved to London after concluding the two-day summit in France on Friday. Recall that Tinubu left Nigeria on Tuesday, to join world leaders in Paris, France on Thursday, to review and sign a New Global Financial Pact that places vulnerable countries on a priority list for support and investment, following the devastating impact of climate change, energy crisis, and after effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a statement by Mr Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, said Tinubu would be in London on a private visit.

President Bola Tinubu boarding Alake said that aside from participating in the summit, Tinubu also held high-profile sideline meetings with fellow heads of state and government, global business leaders and chief executives of leading multilateral and development finance institutions. He said that the summit afforded the president the opportunity of projecting his advocacy for widening the fiscal space, economic justice for Africa as the world accelerates the pace of energy transition and the urgency of addressing the pressing issues of poverty and climate change. “President Tinubu, who was initially scheduled to be back in Abuja on Saturday, will now proceed to London, United Kingdom, for a short private visit. “The President will be back in the country in time for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival,” he said. The two-day Summit, June 22 and 23 looks at opportunities to restore fiscal space to countries that face difficult short-term financial challenges, especially the most indebted; mobilize innovative financing for countries vulnerable to climate change; foster development in low-income countries, and encourage investment in “green” infrastructure for the energy transition in emerging and developing economies. President Tinubu and the other global leaders, multilateral institutions, financial experts and economists took a more holistic look at the recovery of economies from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising cases of poverty, with a view to providing access to finance and investment that will leverage inclusive growth. The Summit was hosted by President Emmanuel Macron of France at Palais Brongniart.
