"Grief after my mother's death collapsed my marriage" -Jim Iyke opens up

Nigerian actor Jim Iyke has opened up about how his marriage to his Lithuanian ex-wife, Dana Kinduryte, crashed after his mother’s death. Jim discussed how delayed mourning contributed to the breakdown of his marriage in a recent podcast hosted by the captivating Toke Makinwa, alongside his colleagues Chidi Mokeme and Kate Henshaw. The well-known actor revealed that the main cause of the problem was his inability to grieve his late mother properly. Jim Iyke acknowledged that he put off going through the grieving process and that by the time he did, his marriage had already suffered.

Jim mentioned that when his mother passed away, he was building a house for her. The actor continued by saying that he was raised as the only boy in the family and was expected to be the unwavering, stoic head of the household. He had little room, as a result, to express his feelings honestly. He took on the role of steadfast support as the rest of his family publicly wept. He claimed that he didn’t have the strength to face his own feelings until after the last funeral ceremonies. He remembered that at first, he struggled to figure out what was upsetting him on the inside. But things turned for the worse when he started getting involved in arguments about unimportant things like his mother’s jewellery, which she cherished. This served as a sobering reminder that his path of grief was far from complete. Jim revealed that his ex-wife really tried to provide him with affection and emotional support throughout this difficult time. He did admit, though, that he was unable to return her affection. Rather, the majority of his affection and focus were directed towards their child, which eventually led to conflict in their marriage.

Hermes revealed that his father single-handedly raised him and his siblings, and despite this, he always emphasized that they should never harbour any hatred towards their mother. The reality star shared how he would feel devastated when he witnessed other students’ mothers attending Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings, while his own mother never showed up. Hermes on the impact of his mother’s absence in his life “One significant thing I think affected me a lot was not having my mum around. A lot of people really think that me looking for my mum [when she went missing from a psychiatric centre], with all the love that I did, she was so present in my life. No. She was absent my entire life. “My entire life was just longing to.. I will be in school. I will see people’s mums come for PTAs and what not, and I will just feel like, Oh! My God, my mum is so pretty, if she came here now, I would probably have like so many more friends. It never happened. “The silver lining for me, why I really still have love to give, is my dad. And I think something happened in the Big Brother show, I think we were sitting in the dining room, it was an argument about how men could not. “Someone said men could not take care of children as much as women would love and take care of them. I felt really attacked by that because my dad raised me. He did an absolutely great job. He took care of really young kids. Got a bus to hustle and train us through school. It was a lot.”

Ay said she advised him to be responsible and look after his younger brothers. This changed the actor’s lifestyle as he became hell bent on obeying his mother’s instruction despite her passing. After their parents passed away, AY claimed he saw himself and his siblings, including renowned event planner Lanre Makun and well-known fashion designer Yomi “Casual” Makun, through school. He said: “I came home to ask for money that I needed for school, and the money wasn’t available. And then, we had lost my dad. So, she [my mum] was seeing me off, she was practically walking me on the street and encouraging me. She said, ‘You know Yomi is looking up to you, Lanre is looking up to you. Your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything funny, don’t be a part of any cult.” “But the money dem never give me o wey I find come o but dem dey encourage me. ‘I know that it’s difficult, but then, just know that your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything stupid. God will do it at the right time. Do you know how touching it will be getting all that messages from your mum, and then you get a call while in school that you’ve lost your mum? “So, all of that moulded me like, okay, this is going to make me live a certain way of life. That was what gave me the boost to work extra hard to see myself through school, see my younger ones through school. It was her message. Her message was mor like, ‘Your younger ones are looking up to you.’ That message was what gave me the foundation of everything that makes me stand out today.”
