"Why lawmakers should not decide their salaries" ― Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria, has revealed why it is unconstitutional and immoral for lawmakers to decide their salaries. Obasanjo stated this while delivering a speech at the 60th-anniversary celebration of legal icon Aare Afe Babalola’s call to the Bar held in Ado Ekiti on Monday, July 10, stating that those who should uphold the law were the ones undermining it.

"Why lawmakers should not decide their salaries" ― Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria He said fixing salaries for elected officials is the responsibility of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) but lawmakers now fix salaries for themselves. “Under paragraph 32(a-e) of Part I to the third schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the commission is saddled with determining the remuneration appropriate for political officeholders, including legislators, among other functions. The point in Nigeria which I have seen and which I can attest to is most of the people who are supposed to be operationalising or managing and seeing the constitution and democracy move forward, they are actually the ones who undermine the constitution. “All elected people, by our constitution, their emolument is supposed to be fixed by the revenue mobilisation commission, but our lawmakers set that aside and they make laws and put any emolument for themselves. Even if that is constitutional, it is not moral and, of course, it is neither constitutional nor moral.” he said

Obasanjo also criticized Tinubu for allegedly owning Alpha Beta, a tax consultancy.

President Bola Tinubu The former Nigerian leader spoke during a chat with Chude Jideonwo, the media personality. Obasanjo when asked about the allegation that he (Obasanjo) attempted to cripple the economy of Lagos, Obasanjo said, “That was absolute nonsense. If he doesn’t know then he doesn’t know anything. “Is it that one that made him have ALPHABETA?” Watch the Video below: //www.instagram.com/embed.js Recall that the former governor of Lagos State claimed that he received zero allocation from the federal government when he was governor. Tinubu governed Lagos state from 1999 to 2007, before contesting Nigeria’s president in 2023, under the All Progressive Congress (APC). Meanwhile, Obasanjo also revealed that some state governors were involved in the infamous third-term fiasco. In 2006, a bill seeking to amend the 1999 constitution and extend term limits by another four years, hit the brick walls at the national assembly. Obasanjo has consistently dismissed seeking to extend his stay in office beyond 2007, saying some governors were behind it all. On his administration’s stance on anti-corruption and the failed third term bid, the former president said, “The governors, some of them, were doing it for themselves”. “Because if the president did a third term, they too would have had a chance for a third term.” On perennial allegations of embezzlement against him, Obasanjo said his forte is raising money and not embezzlement, noting that people who can’t match his acumen should stop castigating him. Obasanjo ruled Nigeria as military head of state before returning as civilian president, as Nigeria commenced its fourth republic and his assertion over a relationship between Tinubu and Alpha Beta is something that the incumbent president has never confirmed.

Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo has written a letter to the Chief Clerk of the Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey, in London, regarding the recent conviction of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, for organ trafficking.

The couple face the risk of a 10-year prison sentence in line with the Modern Slavery Act 2015 of the United Kingdom, following the guilty verdicts pronounced by Mr Justice Johnson. They have been remanded in custody and are due to be sentenced on May 5. In his letter, dated April 3, 2023, Obasanjo requested that the Clerk intervene and ensure that the UK government shows clemency towards the Ekweremadus.

Ike Ekweremadu

He acknowledged the seriousness of their actions, which involved conspiring to arrange the travel of a young man from Nigeria to the UK in order to harvest organs for their daughter. However, he urged the court and the UK government to take into account the couple’s good character and parental instincts, and to be merciful in their sentencing. Obasanjo expressed his desire for warm relations between the UK and Nigeria, and highlighted Ike Ekweremadu‘s position as a distinguished member of the Nigerian Parliament. He also emphasized the urgent medical attention required by their daughter, whose current health condition is in danger. The former president concluded by expressing his hope that the Ekweremadus have learnt from this experience and that they will continue to be outstanding members of their community, contributing fully to the good of society and the nation in general. “Mr. Chief Clerk, I am very much aware of the current travails and conviction of Ike Ekweremadu and his wife in the United Kingdom resulting from their being charged with conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old from Nigeria to the UK in order to harvest organs for their daughter. “I do realise the implications of their action and I dare say, it is unpleasant and condemnable and can’t be tolerated in any sane or civilised society. “However, it is my fervent desire for very warm relations between the United Kingdom and Federal Republic of Nigeria; for his position as one of the distinguished Senators in the Nigerian Parliament, and also for the sake of their daughter in question whose current health condition is in danger and requires urgent medical attention, you will use your good offices to intervene and appeal to the court and the government of the United Kingdom to be magnanimous enough to temper justice with mercy and let punishment that may have to come take their good character and parental instinct and care into consideration. “I do hope Mr. and Mrs. Ekweremadu have learnt from this distressing experience of theirs to guide
their future actions or inactions so they will continue to be outstanding members of their community and will continue to contribute fully to the good of the society in particular and the nation in general.” he wrote.

PDP gives Obasanjo 48 hours to clarify comment about regretting picking Atiku as Vice President; threatens to expose him

PDP gives Obasanjo 48 hours to clarify comment about regretting picking Atiku as Vice President; threatens to expose him

Ex president Olusegun Obasanjo has been given 48 hours by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to clarify recent remark he made about regretting choosing Atiku Abubakar as his vice-presidential candidate in 1999.
Obasanjo had over the weekend stated that he chose his running mate incorrectly for the 1999 presidential election.

On Monday, June 27, Senator Walid Jibril, the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustee, said that while the party has great respect for the former president, it would be regrettable if the statement that has been attributed to him were to prove to be accurate.
The party, also threatened to reveal the ex president’s character if he did not clarify his remarks within 48 hours, claimed that he was upset with Atiku Abubakar for cutting short his agenda for a third term despite the latter’s assistance to the Obasanjo administration.

In Jibril’s words:
“I wish to appeal to former President Obasanjo to come out openly to repeat what he has said
Whether or not he was misquoted or meant what was credited to him.
Although he has not debunked what was reported, one can assume that what was quoted to have been said by him is correct, but if he fails to openly come out and say which is correct in 48 hours, you will hear the bombardment and I will have no option but to break the egg and tell the whole world and Nigerians who is Obasanjo.
There is no doubt Obasanjo may still be angry with Atiku even after helping him to succeed but perhaps for truncating his third term agenda. In any case, Alhaji Abubakar Atuku is our presidential candidate and I can tell you for sure that he will be the President in 2023 insha Allah.”
While speaking on the outcome of the party’s primaries and the selection of Okowa over Nyesom Wike which might have angered the latter, Jibril said:
”Governor Wike is a great party man who fought for the party, when the committee is constituted, in which we will also bring other contestants together, we will go and meet with Governor Wike and appeal to him even if it means kneeling down to beg him.”
