OAU students storm EFCC office, protest release of fellow students

Some OAU students have taken matters into their hands, boarding buses to EFCC office to protest the release of their colleagues arrested by the EFCC. Today, EFCC officials went on a raid in some off-campus hostels in the University, arresting over 60 students without any search warrant. The EFCC has confirmed this on their website today, claiming that the arrest was based on intelligence and they have retrieved 9 exotic cars alongside 190 mobile phones. OAU students at the EFCC office protesting. This enraged the University students who believe the law enforcement agency did not follow due process and have violated their human rights. Although the OAU students were blocked by gun carrying EFCC officials at the entrance who kept telling them to shift back, the students remained adamant, protesting the release of their fellow colleagues. Ailing Ondo governor, Akeredolu prepares to return to office

The ailing governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is getting ready to return to office as soon as his medical team gives him the green light. Recall that following his ill health and pressures from different political quarters in Ondo State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu formally wrote to notify the State House of Assembly that he is embarking on leave and that his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, should act as governor.

Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu The Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, in a statement, said Mr Akeredolu embarked on the 21-day leave for medical treatment abroad from 7th June and that he will be away until 6th July. According to the letter, the leave will extend to the 6th of July due to public holidays on June 12 (Democracy Day) and Eid el Kabir (28th and 29th June. As the one-month leave ends, Akeredolu has stated that he was touched by the extraordinary outpouring of genuine affection, prayers and solidarity from the people. In a statement by his Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, Akeredolu said that the ceaseless evocation of prayers and messages of goodwill for his full recovery have been serving as a comforting salve and a revitalizing tonic. He also expressed his deep appreciation to the citizens of the state for their unwavering prayers and messages of goodwill, as he continues his recovery and strives to regain good health. Pa Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has stated that he would not recognize President Bola Tinubu’s administration until the court gives a final judgement upholding Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election. The Afenifere leader while making the remark explained that the election which brought Tinubu was flawed, hence he can’t be recognized as president. Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization Speaking on Arise Television, Adebanjo said the presidential election was inconclusive with the ongoing presidential Election Petition Tribunal. According to Adebanjo: “Afenifere’s stance, for now, is not to comment on Tinubu’s administration because we believe that the elections are not completed yet; it’s still in progress, that is why we are in court, so commenting on someone who is there and who we don’t believe should be there until the final decision of the court will be probative and reprobative. “We are not talking about his ability, we are talking about the process of his getting there, which is flawed. How can you build something on nothing, he is enjoying a lacuna, nothing is settled until it’s finally settled, that’s our stance. “I refuse to comment on somebody that is not existing yet until the final arbiter of the court, our party may be wrong but that is our own stance. I can’t recognize him in an office that I believe doesn’t exist.”

The presidency has denied the allegation that President Bola Tinubu approved a 114% increase in the salaries of the President, Vice President, elected federal and state political office holders, and judicial officers. President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy, Dele Alake, made this known in a statement on Thursday.

President Bola Tinubu Recall that the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, Muhammad Shehu, Wednesday said the salaries of politicians, judicial and public office holders would be increased by 114 per cent. Shehu, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, spoke on Tuesday while presenting the reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris. But the development drew the ire of civil society organisations, CSOs, law lecturers and Senator Shehu Sani, who argued that the ordinary worker, whose take-home pay was nothing to write home about was the one that deserved such wage increment and not politicians. The RMAFC Chairman, who was represented by a federal commissioner in the commission, Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, said the implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages was effective from January 1, 2023. He said the move was in accordance with the provision of paragraph 32(d) of part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Government (as amended). However, Alake denied this, stating that the report was fake and such a proposal has not been brought before Tinubu for consideration. He said, “We state without any equivocation that President Bola Tinubu has not approved any salary increase, and no such proposal has been brought before him for consideration. While we recognise that it is within the constitutional remit of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission to propose and fix salaries and allowances of political office holders and judicial officers, such cannot come to effect until it has equally been considered and approved by the President. “It is important to note that RMAFC, through its Public Relations Manager, has responded to this fake story being circulated and has already set the record straight. “However, that this unfounded story gained prominence on social media and in a section of mainstream media again brings to the fore the danger fake news poses to the society and our national well-being. “The misinformation was, obviously, contrived to create ill will for the new administration, slow down the upward momentum and massive goodwill the Tinubu-led administration is currently enjoying among Nigerians as a result of its fast-paced, dynamic, and progressive policies.” Alake urged journalists, media managers, and members of the public to ignore stories on government activities and policy issues that do not emanate from approved official communication channels.
