"Some politicians in Aso Rock standing trial for looting country's treasury" ― Falana

Famous Nigerian human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), on Monday urged President Bola Tinubu to strengthen his fight against corruption, especially in the Aso Rock. Falana who was a guest speaker at the 60th anniversary of the call to bar of Aare Afe Babalola in Ekiti State, stated that some politicians and people that can be found in the Aso Presidential Villa are standing trial for looting the country’s treasury.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) He said, “I’m urging the president to lead an anti-corruption crusade so that the country – the largest concentration of black people on earth, can take its rightful place in the committee of nations. “Highly-placed public officers steal money meant for building hospitals, and people are dying on our roads. “Some of those who are going in and out of the villa are standing trial for looting the treasury of this country. So, wrong signals must not be sent to our people and the international community,” Falana said. Speaking further on why corrupt public office holders should be barred from holding positions in government, he referenced the administration of Nigeria’s former president and Chairman of the anniversary lecture, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR), noting that the administration fought against corruption. Falana said, “There’s somebody here who was our president. If you were accused of corruption and your case was before the EFCC or the ICPC, you’ll not be appointed to a position of authority. We must go back to that era.”

Buhari’s Mistakes Tinubu Must Avoid — Politicians Tell Nigerians

Buhari’s Mistakes Tinubu Must Avoid — Politicians Tell Nigerians

During the last presidential elections, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now president, pledged to follow in the footsteps of then-President Muhammadu Buhari, a pledge that earned both Buhari and Tinubu the butt of jokes from Rivers State’s immediate past governor, Mr Nyesom Wike. Tinubu took office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, certified him the winner of the election. However, prominent Nigerians have advised the president to be mindful of some of his predecessor’s erroneous steps, which he must avoid to heal the harm done to the country.

In his nominations, he must unite Nigeria by prioritizing merit, equity, and geopolitical spread over ethnic sensitivities. Buhari’s nepotism shattered Nigeria. We expected Buhari to break with the tradition of a leader surrounding himself with individuals who look and sound like him. That is not the way to bring Nigeria together. Tinubu should not follow in Tinubu’s footsteps. He should not believe that it is OK to continue borrowing and printing money. This devalues the Nigerian naira and promotes inflation. Tinubu must be authentic and honest in his fight against corruption. Buhari pretended to be combating corruption, but there was no proof to back him up. There were more corrupt persons and corruption cases in Nigeria under his watch. Nigeria’s ranking in the corruption index has also deteriorated. Tinubu is expected to be present and not absent. In contrast to Buhari, he should demonstrate that he is in command. I applaud Tinubu’s prompt intervention in the recent standoff between the EFCC and the DSS. He gave orders quickly and calmly, unlike Buhari, who glanced away. This devalues the Nigerian naira and promotes inflation. Tinubu must be authentic and honest in his fight against corruption. Tinubu is expected to be present and not absent. In contrast to Buhari, he should demonstrate that he is in command. Ambassador Yemi Farounmbi Former President Buhari’s major footstep that President Tinubu should follow is infrastructure development. There have been attempts to develop infrastructure, such as the second Niger bridge, the establishment of the University of Medicine and Nutrition, Polytechnics and Technical Colleges of Education, the Lagos-Ibadan express road, the Enugu-Port Harcourt express road, and the Oyo-Ogbomoso-Ilorin express road. But I hope President Tinubu does not follow in Buhari’s footsteps in terms of security, because security in Nigeria degraded or completely disintegrated under his watch. What began as a North-East catastrophe evolved into a national tragedy and headache. We also hope that he will not follow in the footsteps of Buhari in his fight against corruption. We didn’t witness the active campaign against corruption that we expected to see. We hope he does not follow in Buhari’s footsteps by reducing the people to poverty, because it will appear that the people were economically healthier when he arrived eight years ago than when he left last week. We hope that the new President takes a more sensible, objective approach to dealing with the economic situation. We hope that the growing inflation is slowed so that the naira’s value rises, poverty is lessened, new jobs are created, or a favourable environment is established for people willing to work. That is what we anticipate from this President. Former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and APC Chieftain, Chief Frank Kokori If Bola Tinubu says he will follow in Buhari’s footsteps, that does not mean he will be like Buhari. He was striving for power, thus those were merely political discussions. Tinubu will pursue his approach, and you will notice changes from now on. Tinubu would not follow Buhari because he has no philosophy or achievements to be proud of. Tinubu is a clever man with his agenda, and one of the first things he should do is ensure that Nigeria operates under a truly federal system. Nigeria is being managed falsely as a result of what the military did, thus he should properly decentralize the government. Every Nigerian understands the value of security. Buhari talked about security, but he couldn’t do anything about it; he was a security failure. Tinubu should battle corruption and revive the economy. Buhari was isolated, taciturn, and surrounded himself with a clique. Buhari did not have control over his government; his ministers did. Buhari’s ministers were lords who could do whatever they wanted. No government in the world gives its ministers carte blanche.

They are an oil-producing nation, like Nigeria. Yet, they don’t have cheap petrol like Nigeria. Petrol (Premium Motor Spirit) in Ghana is GH₵13.2 per liter at the official rate, which is ₦550. Ghana does not subsidize petrol. That is why they have enough money left to put other things in place, like power plants for 24/7 uninterrupted electricity, good schools, hospitals, etc.   “We can’t be pissing away our national wealth on an unsustainable fuel subsidy, which is mainly consumed by city dwellers who have multiple cars, and be surprised why we have infrastructural deficits.   “Lagos, Kaduna, and Abuja now have trains and commercial buses. Other states should follow suit. Nigerians who cannot afford the new fuel prices should be encouraged and helped by the government to acquire environmentally friendly alternatives, like bicycles. While backing points with reasons, Reno disclosed that he just returned from Ghana where they do not sell cheap fuel and also do not subsidize Petrol. He argued that Nigeria cannot be ‘’pissing away” its national wealth on unsustainable fuel subsidies. Reacting to Reno’s tweet, Pere argued that, unlike Nigerian politicians, their counterparts in Ghana are not ‘’callous and disgusting.” He went on to describe Nigerian politicians as ‘’big time thieves’‘. He added that though Ghanaian politicians steal from the country’s treasury, they still manage to get the work done.

“Some politicians lost elections because they didn’t have money to share”

GistReel

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says that many politicians lost the elections because they didn’t have available money to share. According to the EFCC, due to the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a lot of politicians did not have enough cash to share with the voters during their campaigns. EFCC Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity of the antigraft agency made this disclosure while speaking at an event. According to him, many politicians lost during the elections, because they did not have money to share to electorates. He stated that the naira redesign has been able to prevent corrupt politicians from buying votes. “The violence during elections was caused by the unavailability of cash which was the CBN’s naira redesign policy because politicians could not buy votes. Some politicians lost elections in their strongholds which could not have happened because they didn’t have the cash to share.” Uwujaren said.

Politicians are using tribe as an excuse to cover evil

Nigerian artist Peter Okoye of P-Square fame has slammed politicians for using tribe as an excuse to cover evil in Nigeria.

peter okoye

Peter Okoye has taken to his Twitter page to lament over how some politicians are using tribes to cover up the evil that has been ongoing in the country. According to Peter Okoye, a perception has been created that the Yorubas and the people of Igbos are enemies. He used himself as a case study. He stated that he an Igbo man married a woman from the Yoruba land while adding that Yorubas do not hate the Igbos and vice-versa. According to Peter Okoye, politicians only care about the monies that will go into their pockets and not other persons. “I am an Igbo man married to a Yoruba woman! Igbos do not hate Yorubas.
