Akem-Vingir stated that the church plays an important role in Nigeria’s social and economic fabric. He emphasized that religion, especially the church, provides hope, direction, and purpose for the majority youth population in the country. The pastor went further to say that Nigeria would collapse if the church is removed, highlighting the church’s unique and special place in society. “If you remove the church from Nigeria, the country will collapse. People may deny it, but I am saying it unapologetically. “If the church were not in Nigeria doing what it is doing; serving as the light of the world and as the salt of the earth, the degradation would have been more than we can imagine. “70% of the country is youthful. You can’t allow that kind of generation to be wasted. The church is a place where they can find hope, direction and purpose,” he said. The new RCCG branch in the Durumi area of Abuja is a magnificent 5-storey facility that can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers at once. Pastor Adeboye, however, in his own speech expressed gratitude to God for the successful completion of the project. In his words; “We thank God for this great day, and for the successful completion of this wonderful edifice. We pray that this building will be a beacon of hope for the afflicted and a place of worship for generations to come.” “We pray that this church building will be a source of blessing to all who enter it and that it will continue to serve as a beacon of hope for the afflicted and a place of worship for generations to come.”

FG aborts plan to remove fuel subsidy

According to Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, the Council agreed that further discussions were necessary, and additional preparatory work was required involving the federal government, states, and representatives of the incoming administration. FG’s Statement on Fuel Subsidy Removal “Council agreed that the timing of the removal of fuel subsidy should not be now. But that we should continue with all of the preparatory works that need to be done and that this preparatory has to be done in consultation with the states and other key stakeholders including representatives of the incoming administration. “Council agreed that the fuel subsidy must be removed earlier rather than later because it is not sustainable. We cannot afford it anymore. But we have to do it in such a way that the impact of the subsidy is as much as possible, mitigated on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. “So, this will require looking at alternatives to the fuel subsidy that needs to be planned for and subsequently put in place. But also what needs to be done to support the people that will be most affected as a result of the removal.” Ahmed added that the FG will be working together with representatives of the states between now and June 2023. “We have a plan that we will start working on, putting the building blocks towards the eventual removal of the first subsidy. “And if I may remind this forum that the budget for 2023 has a provision for fuel subsidy only up to June 2023 and also the Petroleum Industry Act has a provision that requires that all petroleum products must be deregulated 18 months after the effective date of the PMS removal and that that period is also up to June 2020.”

“We’ve been able to quietly remove subsidy from electricity”

"We've been able to quietly remove subsidy from electricity"

On Saturday, the Nigerian government revealed that there are no more subsidies in the electricity sector as it has succeeded in quietly removing subsidy from electricity tariffs across the country.

Speaking at a meeting of African Finance Ministers and the International Monetary Fund, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who made the revelation added that plans are also being made to remove subsidy from fuel.
In her words: “We are cleaning up our subsidies. We had a setback; we were to remove fuel subsidy by July this year but there was a lot of pushback from the polity. We have elections coming and because of the hardship that companies and citizens went through during the COVID-19 pandemic, we just felt that the time was not right, so we pulled back on that.
“But we have been able to quietly implement subsidy removal in the electricity sector and as we speak, we don’t have subsidies in the electricity sector. We did that incrementally over time by carefully adjusting the prices at some levels while holding the lower levels down.
“The current review that we are doing is to hold the subsidy at the level in which it is planned… We are currently doing a budget amendment to accommodate incremental subsidy (removal) as a result of the reversal of the decision and we want to cap it at that.

“Hopefully, the parliament will agree with us and we are able to continue with our plan for subsidy (removal) otherwise the way things are going we will not be able to predict where the deficit will be as a result of the fluctuation in the global market.”
