How Ortom spent 9 hours in EFCC custody
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday grilled the immediate past governor of Benue, Mr Samuel Ortom, for nine hours before he was later released. Ortom arrived at the premises of the commission’s Zonal Headquarters, Makurdi, at 10 a.m. and left there at about 7 :00 p.m.

The Makurdi office of EFCC had invited him following allegations of corruption and alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as a governor. A source who disclosed his presence at EFCC said, “Former governor Ortom is currently at our Makurdi zonal office in Benue State. He arrived at about 10 a.m. this morning, and he’s still there now. He was invited over an ongoing investigation concerning alleged misappropriation of funds during his time in office.’’ Ortom also enjoined his then-appointees to make themselves available for questioning if invited saying “Anytime you are invited by the EFCC, don’t be afraid to go, as for me I am not a coward to run away from EFCC, if they come for me I will follow them. “I have nothing to fear, I don’t have any investment in Europe all I have are in this state. If anyone accuses me of committing any crime let the person come and show me.” Reacting to the invitation, Ortom’s media aide, Mr Terver Akase, said that contrary to insinuations in some sections of the mass media, Ortom was not arrested but only honoured the commission’s invitation. “Ortom was neither arrested nor detained at the EFCC Zonal Headquarters in Makurdi,“ Akase said. According to him, the former governor has nothing to hide, adding that he would always be available for questioning by the anti-graft agency. “Ortom has nothing to hide regarding his stewardship in the state,” Akase said.
How FG spent N4.8trn on ‘unproductive’ refineries – Investigation
An ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives has revealed that the Federal Government expended N4.8 trillion on operating costs for three refineries, despite all of them running below 11%. The committee, chaired by Ganiyu Johnson conducted an investigation and presented its report on Tuesday and was adopted by the House Committee of the whole. The report revealed that the Federal Government spent over N4.8 trillion in operating costs on refineries that were unable to produce refined petroleum resources, while at the same time spending trillions on fuel subsidies. The report further stated that the three refineries became unproductive from the year 2010 making the following range of losses: Port Harcourt Refinery Company at 7.6% loss to the tune of N132,526.17 billion from 2012 Warri Refinery at 6% loss to the tune of N111,376 billion from 2014; and Kaduna Refinery at 10% loss to the tune of N122,621.97 billion from 2014.

“We spent just $1.2m to evacuate Nigerians to Egypt from Sudan”
The Federal Government has said that about $1.2m was used to evacuate the stranded Nigerians out of Sudan. The piece of information was disclosed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, during a briefing by State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC.
According to the minister, the government provided security cover for the eight-hour journey from Luxol to Cairo and the eleven-hour trip from Aswan to Cairo, Egypt, and 40 buses to transport about 2,400 students from Sudan. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Onyeama, also noted that no Nigerian lost their lives in the conflict, and said there are no talks about alternative plans for continued education for the evacuees, most of whom are students of the University of Khartoum.
