Manchester United close Old Trafford megastore over anti-Glazer protest

The megastore at Old Trafford has been shut down after Manchester United fans protested against the current owners of the club, the Glazers. The protest ensued barely an hour after the Red Devils released their new home kit for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, June 27. Supporters are furious after seven frustrating months of waiting for the Glazer family to finally sell the club, with the Americans having put United on the market in November yet failed to communicate with fans since.

It later reopened to continue selling merchandise. United had been expecting a congregation of fans after the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) released a statement confirming plans for a protest. It read; “The overwhelming majority of United fans want to see a conclusion to this protracted sale process with the majority supporting a full sale, at least based on our soundings. Protest planned on Tuesday to make that message clear.” 🗣 A woman was heckled and booed by protesters after shopping at the Megastore this morning…#MUFC | #ManUtd pic.twitter.com/NOHB1SsoOF — Man United News (@ManUtdMEN) June 27, 2023 The protest came as Manchester United projected record annual revenue of up to £640 million in the current financial year. Revenue guidance for the current financial year was raised to a record £630m to £640m in the third quarter financial results for the period ending March 31, 2023, which were released on Tuesday, June 27. This is driven by record match attendance and matchday revenues. Ticket sales for the 2022-23 season surpassed the previous record set in 2016-17, with 2.4m sold.

At the moment, it appears that Qatari Sheikh Jassim is the front-runner to take over the reins of the club, however, there’s been also a lot of speculation about Sir Jim Ratcliffe, combined with the possibility that the Glazers don’t sell up at all! This would be the worst-case scenario for fans, who are desperate to part ways with the duo who have seemingly sucked the club of their finances for years now.

Tinubu scheduled to meet with leaders from United States, France, and Switzerland

Tinubu scheduled to meet with leaders from United States, France, and Switzerland

Starting Thursday, President Bola Tinubu will attend the Paris Financial Pact Summit where he will hold meetings with the delegations of France, the United States of America, Sweden, and two other countries. Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy, informed reporters in Paris that the request for meetings with Tinubu is a result of his administration’s economic policies that have been implemented in the past three weeks since he took office.

Tinubu scheduled to meet with leaders from United States, France, and Switzerland

President Bola Tinubu “Quite a number of them, the US, France itself, Switzerland and two others. There are so many international financial institutions that are also willing to see him,” Alake told journalists in Paris on Wednesday. The presidential spokesman said the two-day summit would enable Tinubu, who is on his first foreign trip since his inauguration, to network and attract foreign direct investment to the country. Alake explained, “The President wants to network with international finance Corporations and countries that would facilitate foreign direct investment into Nigeria. “Don’t forget that Mr. President has taken some very bold steps in the area of economy, in the area of social engineering in the last few weeks, and particularly with reference to the unification of the multiple exchange rates, which has caused a very positive multiplier effect.” Apart from the immediate, medium and long-term positive effects of the unification policy, Alake said, “There could be a need for an injection of direct foreign exchange into the economy to shore up the value of the naira while market forces stabilise.” He cited the lifted restrictions on spending done through domiciliary accounts, saying it will “build confidence in the foreign exchange system of Nigeria, which means people abroad can begin to bring in their money into the economy.” “Even those at home, who have hoarded their dollars for fear of restrictions and all that, will now be more encouraged to bring the dollars into the financial system,” he added. Despite these, the presidential aide said the country still needs an injection of foreign exchange to build or complement its domestic policies. “That is the essence of this meeting; it is a global summit and there are several heads of state of developed societies. The President’s policies in the last three weeks have really encouraged these foreign nations and investors to become more interested in the affairs of Nigeria; in shoring up the economy of Nigeria. “A lot of them are quite interested. Many of them have even indicated interest to meet with Mr. President on this trip,” Alake said. On Thursday and Friday, Tinubu will join other leaders to review and sign a New Global Financial Pact that places vulnerable countries on the priority list for support and investment following the devastating impact of climate change, the energy crisis, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders will mobilise innovative financing for countries vulnerable to climate change, foster development in low-income countries, and encourage investment in “green” infrastructure for the energy transition in emerging and developing economies. The President and the other global leaders, multilateral institutions, financial experts and economists will also take a more holistic look at the recovery of economies from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising cases of poverty to provide access to finance and investment that will leverage inclusive growth. He returns on Saturday.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly furious with the club’s continued takeover delay. Erik ten Hag is reportedly growing increasingly frustrated with the ongoing takeover talks at Manchester United as they continue to hamper his transfer plans.

One of the names on his shopping list is West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, however, United will face competition from Manchester City and Chelsea as well as Arsenal, who are the favourites to secure his signature following the takeover delay. The Sun reported that the Dutchman is becoming annoyed by the Glazers’ reluctance to spend any significant money until the uncertainty of the club’s ownership has been resolved. A source told the publication; “Eric ten Hag is unhappy that his plans to sign a contract with Declan Rice are being disrupted due to the Manchester United takeover saga. “The Red Devils boss thinks West Ham skipper Rice would be the perfect addition and he was desperate to make an offer. Jordan Pickford is one name mentioned while Manchester United are also on the hunt for a striker. Rasmus Hojlund and Victor Osimhen are the names remaining on the club’s wish list for a striker as Harry Kane has been struck off. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been the two prominent bidders to complete a takeover at Old Trafford. But despite reports suggesting Sheikh Jassim is edging closer to winning the battle, there’s been radio silence on the subject. The Times reported that it is unlikely that the takeover will be completed before the start of the new 2023-24 season.

Manchester United retain Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has been included in the list of players retained by Manchester United, despite being suspended. The English footballer was suspended by the club after he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Despite no longer facing charges, 22-year-old Greenwood remains suspended by United, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into whether he brought the club into disrepute and was in breach of his contract. Greenwood has been on full pay since his suspension and it was reported recently that the club is considering sending the player, who has two years remaining on his current deal, on loan for the new season but no decision has been made yet. A new list released today revealed that Mason Greenwood is still retained by Manchester United, but there is no indication of the outcome of their internal investigation currently being carried out. It merely states he remains contracted to the club.

The club also said on Friday, June 16, that it is continuing contract negotiations with David de Gea who was left off its retained list of players for next season. De Gea becomes a free agent this summer, but could still remain at the club where he has been since he signed from Atletico Madrid in 2011. “Discussions remain open with David over a potential new contract,” United said. Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove for the most clean sheets last season, De Gea’s position has been in question over his ability to play out from the back with his feet.

Manchester United have ended their interest in signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The Guardian reported that United are now ready to look elsewhere having accepted the Spurs captain will be too expensive and is out of their reach. Source: Getty Red Devils’ manager, Erik ten Hag, had made the player his primary summer target and is disappointed that it has fallen through, but understands the club cannot go past a certain point when it comes to the transfer fee and the overall package for a 29-year-old, who has one year left on his contract. Spurs value Kane at around £100 million, despite his contract which would soon expire. Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, is keen to hold on to Kane, in the hope that he signs a new contract and despite the knowledge that he could lose the striker for free next summer. He also does not entertain the idea of selling Kane to a direct rival. Real Madrid have also expressed an interest in Kane, but with Kylian Mbappé now a possible option they may opt against pursuing a deal for the England captain. United are still keen to sign the Atalanta forward Rasmus Højlund, who has had an impressive first season in Serie A after joining from Sturm Graz. The 20-year-old scored nine times in 32 league games for the Bergamo side and United like the potential he is showing. But he would not be seen as a regular starter in the No 9 position in 2023-24 even if they could sign him during the summer. Atalanta could, however, ask for as much as €60 million for the Dane.

Source: Getty Kim Min-jae’s transfer to Manchester United is edging ever closer with the Premier League side set to pay his €50 million release clause. The Napoli Central defender has only been in Italy for one season having joined from Fenerbahce last summer for €18m. According to Il Mattino, a deal with Manchester United has been “accepted” for Kim Min-jae and will be completed on July 1. The defender is already being considered “a former player”. The player has also ‘accepted’ the Reds’ offer in terms of wages. Min-jae is set to pocket £9m a year at the Theatre of Dreams, which works out at around £175,000-a-week. Again, this feels like Kim is arguably United’s top priority signing this summer. There are still doubts about Harry Maguire’s future at the club, with the man from South Korea a definite upgrade on the Reds’ current club captain. His arrival at Old Trafford could spell the end for Harry Maguire. Maguire has been used in a bit-part role under boss Erik ten Hag who has settled on Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice defensive pairing.

Following a two-year stint in the Chinese Super League with Beijing Guoan, Kim signed for Turkish giants Fenerbahce for around £2.5 million. Napoli splashed out £15.5m for his services last summer and are now set for a windfall after his impressive season in Italy.

Manchester United have ruled out the possibility of Harry Maguire joining Newcastle United on loan but are open to selling their captain. Having slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season, Maguire started just eight league games for the club this season with three Premier League sides interested in signing him this summer. Source: Getty Manchester United would sell Maguire to Newcastle due to the finances involved but a loan to St James’ Park is out of the question. The Sun reported that Newcastle is eager to work out a loan deal but the Red Devils have no intention of bolstering the ranks of a top-four rival without being financially rewarded. Aston Villa are watching keenly as they want extra cover in the squad for their European campaign. Villa would have a better chance of a loan deal being accepted by United. Tottenham are linked with the 30-year-old but are yet to make a play. Leicester was also keen on signing the defender but relegation put an end to that idea. United players will reportedly get a pay rise following qualification for the Champions League. And Maguire’s current wages of around £200,000 a week would already be hard to match by most Premier rivals. Victor Lindelof was also the Dutchman’s preferred option during the final stages of the season with left-back Luke Shaw also selected ahead of Maguire on a number of occasions. Ten Hag recently suggested his skipper is not happy with the situation and opened the door for him to leave Old Trafford this summer. United are thought to be working on a deal to sign Napoli star Kim Min-Jae and could cash in on Maguire to help fund that move. The Red Devils fans may need to ready themselves for weeks or even months of rumours about Maguire with no firm decision emerging just yet.

Newcastle considers hijacking Kim Min-jae from Manchester United

Newcastle considers hijacking Kim Min-jae from Manchester United

Newcastle United has reportedly initiated a move to rival Manchester United for Napoli defender, Kim Min-jae. The South Korean defender has attracted significant interest this summer despite having a £42 million release clause in his contract which is only valid for the first two weeks of July. Kim Min-jae has had a transformational effect on Napoli. While the Italian giants were already closing in on becoming the top dog in Serie A, the 26-year-old provided the nudge to help them win the Italian topflight league title for the first time in 33 years. In addition, he has also been a pivotal figure for his national side. Newcastle considers hijacking Kim Min-jae from Manchester UnitedKim Min-Jae at a match for Napoli. The Sun reported that Newcastle has also held talks with Kim’s representatives. The publication reported; “Newcastle are weighing up a move for Manchester United target Kim Min-jae. While Man United remain favourites to land the South Korea ace, Newcastle are also keeping tabs. “SunSport understands that Kim’s representatives held talks with Toon chiefs at St James’ Park at one of their last home games of the season.” The report also gave details of how Newcastle coach, Eddie Howe is eager to provide competition for Fabian Schar and Sven Botman as Newcastle prepares to play Champions League football next season. Source: Getty Jamaal Lascelles, who is approaching the final year of his deal at St James’ Park, could be sold this summer. The Englishman does not feature prominently in Howe’s future plans at the club. The Sun says that Kim will decide his future next month once he has completed South Korea’s mandatory military service. The 26-year-old wants to move to the Premier League after one season in Italy. Manchester United has been the most interested club pursuing Kim Min-jae this summer. And it is hardly surprising why the Red Devils are keen on signing the defender. After all, Harry Maguire faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford. And he will likely leave Manchester United to resurrect his stuttering career. It will be interesting to see how Manchester United will react to Newcastle being eager to land Kim Min-jae. With widespread reports positioning the Red Devils as the front-runners, the ball is in their court. And a summer move to Old Trafford seems likely for the South Korean international.

London police on Sunday, June 4, announced that it arrested a Manchester United fan after he was pictured wearing a highly offensive shirt during the FA Cup final against Manchester City. The offensive shirt the Manchester United fan wore had the number 97 on the back and the words ‘not enough’ across the top.

They died as a result of a crush at the stadium in Sheffield during Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989. After a picture of the fan began circulating on social media, the Metropolitan Police Events announced that officers arrested the man on suspicion of a public order offence during the FA Cup Final at Wembley. Condemning the fan’s action, the English Football Association said in a statement in a statement; “The FA strongly condemns the actions of the individual who wore a shirt referencing the Hillsborough disaster ahead of the Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

The police also confirmed they arrested 22 others during the final for offences including assault, affray, possession of drugs and drunk and disorderly behaviour. However, there have not yet been arrests made after a item was thrown onto the pitch and appeared to strike United’s Victor Lindelof shortly after Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot.
