The development raised hopes of it being operational to curb the hardship facing Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Tinubu. However, in the video making rounds on social media, some construction workers at a section of the Dangote Refinery alleged that it is incomplete. One of the workers further stated that Nigeria is a scam for selling out lies about the completion of the project.

The police disclosed that about 90 percent sex workers arrested were Nigerians while the rest were Ghanaians and others from other foreign nationals. “Yesterday, I directed the police to do an operation in town, and so they started the first operation to arrest all those prostitutes who come to our town. We managed to arrest about 50 people, and we will arraign them before the court,” he said. “About 90 percent are Nigerians. There are Ghanaians. They are coming here to dent the good image of Koforidua. Everybody who is doing that business will not be tolerated. Some may be living in your house. If you know such persons and cannot go to the police station, call me,” “Prostitution in Koforidua will not be tolerated, and we urge you to help us to deal with the act in the town,” the MP added.

Electricity workers to go on nationwide strike

The Nigerian government‘s abrupt removal of fuel subsidy has led to the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) instructing its members to cease their services across the country. In a notice signed by the acting general secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the NUEE urged its members to comply with the directive and initiate the work stoppage from the early hours of Wednesday.

Credit: Business Day President Bola Tinubu, in his inaugural address on Monday, declared the end of the petroleum subsidy regime, deeming it unsustainable. In response to this announcement, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) directed its outlets to sell fuel at a significantly increased price range of N480 to N570 per litre, representing a nearly 200 percent surge from the initial price below N200. On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared its intention to organize a nationwide protest on the following Wednesday if the NNPCL refused to revert to the previous price regime in the oil sector. The Nigerian Union of Journalists also threatened to participate in the strike action. In a letter to its members on Sunday, the NUEE explained that its decision was a result of the NLC emergency national executive council (NEC) meeting, held on June 2 at the Labour House in Abuja, to address the sudden removal of fuel subsidy, which was causing significant hardships for Nigerians and contributing to increased inflation in the economy. The statement directed all national, state, and chapter executives to mobilize their members in full compliance with the directive, with the withdrawal of services nationwide commencing from 00.00 hours on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. “To this effect, all National, State and Chapter executives are requested to start the mobilisation of our members in total compliance with this directive,” the statement said. “Please note that withdrawal of Services nationwide commences from 0.00 hours of Wednesday, June 7, 2023,” the statement reads in part.

UK stops recruitment of Nigerian health workers

UK stops recruitment of Nigerian health workers

The UK government makes a decision to cease the consideration of Nigerian health workers for recruitment due to the country being placed on the red list of nations that are not eligible for recruitment. UK terminates recruitment of Nigerian health workers This resolution is made after the World Health Organisation (WHO) identified Nigeria as one of the 55 countries facing significant challenges in terms of the health workforce. As per the UK government, health and social care employers will no longer actively seek recruitment from these countries, unless a government-to-government agreement is in place. This is expressed in a statement on the website of the UK government titled ‘Code of Practice for the international recruitment of Health and social care personnel in England’. “Consistent with the WHO Global Code of Practice principles and articles, and as explicitly called for by the WHO Global Code of Practice 10-year review, the listed countries should be prioritised for health personnel development and health system-related support, provided with safeguards that discourage active international recruitment of health personnel. “Countries on the list should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers, recruitment organisations, agencies, collaborations, or contracting bodies unless there is a government-to-government agreement in place to allow managed recruitment undertaken strictly in compliance with the terms of that agreement. “Countries on the WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards list are graded red in the code. If a government-to-government agreement is put in place between a partner country, which restricts recruiting organisations to the terms of the agreement, the country is added to the amber list.” In 2021, the United Kingdom halted the recruitment of healthcare workers from Nigeria and 46 other nations. This decision was made due to the rising number of health and social care worker migrations from low and lower-middle-income countries, which poses a threat to the achievement of their health and social care objectives. As per data from the UK General Medical Council, there are presently 11,055 doctors who have been trained in Nigeria practising in the UK.

Sxx workers vow not to offer services to taxi drivers for one week for abusing a female passenger

Sxx workers vow not to offer services to taxi drivers for one week for abusing a female passenger

The sxx workers of Kenya’s Mombasa county have united with other Kenyans to criticize acts of abuse perpetrated on a female passenger in Nairobi last Friday.

Approximately 16 people accused of mugging and sexually abusing a female ambassador on Forest Road have been held for 15 days to allow officers to conclude their investigations.
On March 4, the culprits were apprehended after a video clip of the victim being assaulted went viral. The assault is alleged to have been reported to the Parklands police station by the Zimbabwean ambassador.

In cooperation with the female passenger, Maryline Laini, chair lady of Nkoko Injuu Africa, a CBO that supports the rights of sxx workers, has declared that her members will not provide their services to motorists for a week.
In her words:
“These people are our clients, but from today, no registered sxx worker will offer sxxual services to any bodaboda rider in this region. If a member is found with a bodaboda client within the period, she will be deregistered”
Speaking to K24TV, Laini revealed that withholding their services is another way of fighting for justice.

She said:
“We know this is where we get our basic needs and fend for our families but we are ready to go hungry for this type of violence to come to an end”
