Wayne Rooney has been sacked as manager of Birmingham City, following a dismal 15-match spell, the club has announced. Rooney took charge of the club in October, but his reign has been marred by poor results, with Birmingham winning just two of their 15 games under his management. This run of form has seen them slip to 20th in the Championship, just six points clear of the relegation zone. In a statement, Birmingham’s CEO Garry Cook acknowledged that Rooney’s appointment “did not go as planned,” leading to the decision to part ways with the former Manchester United striker.

He also hinted at the need for more time to implement the changes he believed were necessary for the team’s success. The club is now on the lookout for a new manager, with Professional Development Coach Steve Spooner taking charge on an interim basis. Rooney’s departure comes as a surprise after he was handed a three-year deal upon his appointment, with the club’s co-owner and chairman expressing confidence in his ability to lead Birmingham to victories.
