Dream Team VI midfielder Okechukwu Azubuike has hailed Captain John Mikel Obi for his impact in the squad.
Off and on the pitch, Mikel Obi has been a fantastic leader for the Dream Team VI during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The Chelsea midfielder was impressive in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Denmark in the quart-finals on Saturday, August 13.
Speaking on Mikel, Azubuike said his midfield partner has exceeded his expectation.
“I expected him to impact the team during games only but his impact has been 100% on and off the pitch,” Azubuike told FC Naija.
“A lot, he has been talking to everyone on and off the pitch, he’s been a great leader speaking positive words and also encouraging us during games.”
Mikel is a popular figure among the Dream Team VI and has been given a nickname in camp, ‘Odogwu’.
Off the pitch, sources in camp have revealed that Mikel has been helping out the team from his pocket.
He recently paid N1.8m ($4,600) for the hotel bills of team in Sao Paulo but has gotten a refund from the Sports Ministry.
