President Tinubu emerges as ECOWAS chairman

During the 63rd Ordinary Session of ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu was elected as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government. The session took place in the capital of Guinea-Bissau, Bissau, on a Sunday afternoon, 9th of July, 2023. President Tinubu emerges as ECOWAS chairmanPresident of Nigeria, Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government,” the Nigerian president said after he received handover documents from the outgoing chairman who is Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Embaló. The position of the ECOWAS Chairmanship is filled by one of the heads of state or government from the member countries, selected through a rotational system for a duration of one year. Ex-president, Muhammadu Buhari held the position between 2018 and 2019.
