A 70-year-old Nigerian woman, Onikeoke Mabel Ayodele Ayodeji has shared her journey of overcoming adversity to achieve a master’s degree. Hailing from Ondo State, Nigeria, Ayodele’s life took a remarkable turn when she left her hometown in 1967, seeking educational opportunities her parents couldn’t afford to provide. After completing what was then known as “Modern 3,” Ayodele found herself at a crossroads as her educational journey came to an unexpected halt.
Watching her friends continue their studies while she lagged behind left her feeling despondent. In an effort to make ends meet, she made the courageous decision to become a salesgirl. Ayodele’s path to self-sufficiency was not without its challenges, as she took on the demanding role of working in a canteen filled with unruly men. Despite the hardships and maltreatment she faced, she persevered, never losing sight of her dream to further her education. The turning point in Ayodele’s life came when one of her teachers recognized her academic potential. Recounting a moment that fueled her determination. “One day, my teacher came to class when I was in Modern school and asked us to prepare for an impromptu test. After he had marked my script, he commended me and said he wished I’d become a professor by the time he returns in 10 years’ time!” she shared. These encouraging words became the driving force behind Ayodele’s unwavering resolve to achieve her educational aspirations, even in the face of financial constraints and numerous obstacles.
