Source: Getty The centre-back, who had one year remaining on his existing contract, made 39 appearances for Villarreal last season and was part of the Spain squad which reached the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Confirming the signing of 26-year-old Pau Torres, Aston Villa said in a statement; “The 26-year-old defender, who has been capped on 23 occasions for his country, arrives at Villa for an undisclosed fee. “A native of Villarreal, Torres came through the ranks of his hometown club and went on to become a key player for the La Liga side.” Villa have been looking to add experience to their squad ahead of their Europa Conference League campaign and Torres is the club’s second signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of midfielder Youri Tielemans from Leicester City earlier this week.

He won the Europa League with Villarreal under current Villa boss Unai Emery when they defeated Manchester United in the 2021 final. Aston Villa will start their 2023/24 Premier League season with a Saturday Night Football fixture away at Newcastle on August 12. Jackson’s late season form, in what was a breakthrough campaign, earned him La Liga Player of the Month in May, helping Villarreal finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League. He also featured for Senegal at the Qatar World Cup, making his international debut in a group-stage game against the Netherlands. The Senegalese star is expected to compete for a role in Pochettino’s frontline next season along with Nkunku, Armando Broja, and David Datro Fofana. With Nicolas Jackson confirmed, Chelsea now needs to clear more deadwood in their attack. Romelu Lukaku, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Christian Pulisic are still on the club’s books, and they will all need to be sold in the coming weeks.

As a youth, Jackson played for Senegalese team Casa Sports. He had one season with the top-flight side before Villarreal snapped him up in 2019 and the attacker began training with their U-19 team. After an initial struggle, it was believed the youngster would benefit from first-team football. Jackson spent the 2020-21 season on loan at second-division Mirandes, scoring his first professional goal against CD Castellón in a 1-1 draw a month after his arrival.
