A traditional Ijaw wedding ceremony left spectators in awe as the groom tirelessly showered his bride with money in an attempt to earn her elusive smile. The Ijaw people, known for their unique culture centered around fishing and festivals, celebrated the Bibife, a traditional marriage rite that’s full of life and cheer. The bride, dressed in vibrant attire, maintained a serious face as the groom showered her with money. He wanted to show his love and make her happy. But, according to Ijaw customs, the bride is expected to keep her emotions in check until she’s satisfied with the money given to her by the groom and his family. Even as the groom ran out of money, his friends joined him in the money shower, hoping to see the bride’s smile light up the room. But, to everyone’s surprise, she remained composed, leaving them curious about what else might bring her happiness. The Ijaw people hold the Bibife ceremony dear as it tests the groom’s love and commitment. He must prove that he can provide for his bride’s needs and happiness. On the other hand, the bride demonstrates her dignity and pride by not being swayed by material things. Chief Ebiere Tamuno, a respected Ijaw elder, explained, “Bibife isn’t just a wedding celebration; it’s about values and respect. The groom shows his love, and the bride shows her strength.” See below; @km_with_dflowerprince1 As an ijaw bride the groom have to make the bride smile #forevermrsayo #kmwithdflowerprince #bellanaijaweddings #ijawpeople #ijawpikin1 #ijawwomen #ijawweddings #ijawwedding ♬ original sound – Flowerprince
