Samuel Eto'o accused of match-fixing in Cameroon

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o, who currently serves as the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) has been accused of match-fixing in relation to second division club Victoria United. Camfoot reported that Eto’o has been accused of promising to secure Victoria United’s promotion by orchestrating the manipulation of matches. Consequently, Victoria United obtained promotion to a higher division, with the federation later ruling that the runner-up of the previous season, Stade de Bertoua, was deemed ineligible.

He was heard promising to assist the team’s promotion by influencing the actions of referees, this has raised questions regarding the integrity of the promotion process. The former Barcelona star was heard saying; “There are things we can do, but you have to be very discreet brother. I’m out of the country. I haven’t even had time to go home and work with the president because I can’t call the refs directly and tell them to be careful. But I can work with the president [of the referees]. “Don’t worry, we’ll give you your three points and we will suspend the referee. But let me at least come back to Cameroon.  “I arrive on the 3rd (of January) in the evening. So we’ll meet in the office on the 4th. But I’m going to discard this referee anyway. I’m going to disqualify him.

Maybe you organise two days, you invite your wives to Yaounde, we see each other discreetly, we talk and you leave.  “It’s important to have a good relationship with the president of the league. He has the power. And from there, he, with his commissions, will be able to suspend even the president of the referees.” The match-fixing allegation against Samuel Eto’o is coming days after he was also accused by former Cameroon FA vice-president, Henry Njalla Quan, accused Eto’o of ruining the international career of Man United goalie Onana. The new £47m star quit the national team last year after leaving Cameroon’s World Cup squad following a bust-up with management. Eto’o has not responded to any of the allegations.

Motorcyclists in Cameroon protest against Tinubu over removal of fuel subsidy

A video of some commercial motorcyclists in Cameroon, protesting against the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu is trending online. Previous governments had tried unsuccessfully to remove the subsidy which has kept fuel prices artificially low, although they have steadily climbed through the years. Source: Reuters In 2012, a protest known as “Occupy Nigeria” raged for weeks after then-President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to end the subsidy. Tinubu and some other big-weight politicians in the country joined the protest at the time, claiming that such subsidy does not exist. However, at his inaugural speech on May 29, Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy. In a seemingly off-the-cuff remark during his inaugural speech, Tinubu declared, “the fuel subsidy is gone,” adding that it was unsustainable. The rising costs could not be justified as resources dwindle, he said. “We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, healthcare, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions,” Tinubu added.

Motorcyclists protesting against Tinubu in Cameroon Long lines immediately started forming at petrol stations after Tinubu’s speech, as Nigerians rushed to stock up on fuel before the impending jump in prices. Tinubu’s office was later forced to issue a statement clarifying that the subsidy would end by June 30, but that did not stop some filling stations from selling at higher prices. Shortly after the announcement was made, state-owned oil firm Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) confirmed that there’s been an adjustment in the retail price of fuel in the country. The adjustment saw fuel sell at above N450 in some states in the country. Days after NNPC confirmed that fuel subsidy has indeed been removed, some commercial motorcyclists in Garoua, Cameroon, protested against the development. They expressed their dissatisfaction in a blend of Fulfulde and French, criticizing President Tinubu. The video which went viral shortly after it was shared, has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. It also lends credence to claims of Nigeria’s subsidized fuel being stolen and taken to other countries where they are resold for more profit. Borussia Dortmund’s star, Youssoufa Moukoko has had his age questioned following the controversy surrounding Cameroon’s under-17s. Youssoufa Moukoko enmeshed in alleged age fraud following Cameroon controversy Moukoko was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, before moving to Germany in 2014 where he was adopted. The footballer who joined Dortmund in 2016, has gone about breaking all sorts of records for the Bundesliga giants already. He became the youngest player to reach a number of achievements, from playing in the UEFA Youth League at 14 to becoming the youngest Bundesliga goalscorer in history, just two years later. The player who has attracted interest from big clubs around the world, also has a cult following on Football Manager. However, in the last few days, there’s been an age fraud controversy arising in Cameroon. The country’s under-17 side was preparing to play Central Africa in qualifying games for the Nations Cup this month when it was discovered that 21 of the 30-strong squad failed age tests. Youssoufa Moukoko enmeshed in alleged age fraud following Cameroon controversy New players were quickly drafted in by coach Jean Pierre Fiala but, in a further humiliation, it was discovered that 11 of the additions were also over-age. Following the controversy, Austrian publication Laoloa 1, has reported that the teenager’s birth certificate might be wrong and he may be 22-years-old. The publication claims that Moukoko’s adoptive father had sent the alleged unearthed birth certificate to a journalist. In Germany, it’s been alleged that a birth certificate dated 2000 with the name Yousouffa Mohamadou and attributed to Dortmund striker Moukoko, was discovered in 2022. It is not the first time that he has faced questions regarding his age, his coaches at Dortmund couldn’t agree how old he was back in 2017, though the German FA denied any wrongdoing. In this matter, the DFB relies on the details of the home club of the player.”
