During a visit to the palace of Rilwan Akinolu, the Oba of Lagos, Nigeria’s President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, described the certificate of return presented to him by INEC as a “World Cup” trophy.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the presidential election held on February 25, with a total of 8,794,726 votes, while his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), secured 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes, respectively. Tinubu promised the monarchies that he would not let Nigerians down. “To all the monarchies seated, may God provide you with strong health for you. God will not allow our country to perish. We will not be used as a tool to [email protected] you. I will not let you down,” he said. “The journey that we embarked upon and we have returned home with a certificate — it is like our own World Cup — and I thank you all for the effort,” Tinubu stated.

Controversial Nigerian actress, Eniola Badmus, has been criticised online after displaying the original copy of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s certificate of return from INEC. Recall that, on Wednesday, 1st of March, 2023, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared the winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Following this, the president-elect of Nigeria was issued a certificate of return. Award-winning singer, Davido has congratulated his uncle, the new governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, as he receives his certificate of return from the residential chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The singer tweeted: “It’s been a long battle fought!! We put our Family name on the line; I put my career on the line! But we had faith!! This was God testing us if we really believed in him!! I feel victorious! Congrats! Your excellency @AAdeleke_01! As for me it’s back to the studio! 🔊🌏❤️🤞🏾”

INEC replies Davido over Certificate of Return

The independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has revealed that the commission has up to 14 days to issue the winner of any election with the Certificate of Return (CoR), faulting award-winning singer, Davido’s query in this regard.
The DMW boss had queried why the commission had not presented his uncle, Ademola Adeleke with a CoR after 48 hours of winning the Osun State gubernatorial poll.

Replying to Davido, the commission in a statement by its National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the commission had up to 14 days to issue the winner with the CoR.
He said, “Those that intervene and play roles in the electoral process should try to have basic knowledge of the constitutive legal instruments that guide and regulate the conduct of elections.
“The commission is a public trust and a creation of the Constitution and the law and must be seen to respond to public demands for transparency and openness.
“The commission will continue to uphold the basic tenets of transparency, openness and inclusivity in the conduct of elections and the delivery of electoral services.”
