Manchester City have kept their treble hope alive after defeating Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley to lift the 2023 FA Cup. The Red Devils went close to a second leveller through Marcus Rashford and substitute Alejandro Garnacho but they could not find the goal to force extra time. The FA Cup is Manchester City’s second trophy this season as they won the Premier League for the 2022-23 season, finishing five points above second-placed Arsenal. Manchester City needs to defeat Inter Milan next week in the Champions League Final, to complete their treble run.

It also effectively ends fifth-placed Liverpool’s slim hope of gate-crashing the top four. Chelsea are 12th on the Premier League table and they’ve set a new club record with a 16th defeat in a 38-game Premier League season to compound finishing in the bottom half of the top-flight for the first time in 27 years. Manchester United will end the league season at home to Fulham on Sunday afternoon while Chelsea hosts Newcastle United.

Man City restored the lead in the 35th minute after Julian Alvarez unleashed a stunning effort from distance which looped over Leno and into the top corner. Haaland who bagged his 34th goal during the match, is now level with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer for most goals in a single Premier League season. Cole and Shearer scored their 34 in 42-game seasons, and Haaland already owns the 38-game record after passing Mohamed Salah’s 2017-18 campaign. The Norwegian has scored 50 goals in all competitions this season. 
Fulham remains in 10th place with 45 points, but lost Tim Ream and Andreas Pereira to injuries during the match. Man City are now on top of the table with 76 points to Arsenal’s 75 and also have one extra game to play.

While it looked all gloomy for Real Madrid after Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds an electric start with two quickfire goals, Vinicius Junior set in motion a dominant turnaround for Real Madrid which paid off. Following the win, Real Madrid became the first visiting club to put four goals past Liverpool at Anfield. It was also the second time in this campaign that the Reds conceded at least four times in the Champions League after doing so against Napoli on September 7. With his brace at Anfield on Tuesday night, Benzema has now scored more goals against Liverpool in European Cup and Champions League history than any other player (6). He entered play level with Didier Drogba for the record. Team-mate Vinicius Junior is now in second place in that category (5). 
22-year-old Vinicius has also become the youngest player since Johan Cruyff to score at least twice as a visitor in a European match at Anfield. Benzema has now scored in 18 consecutive Champions League campaigns, equalling Lionel Messi’s all-time record. Real Madrid is now the first team to win a Champions League match by three goals after trailing by at least two. The record applies to both home and away fixtures. Vinicius Junior has also become the second-youngest Madrid player to score in three straight UCL games. Raul was 22 years and 163 days old when he achieved the feat in 1999.
