Aliko Dangote set to acquire French football club

Nigerian business mogul and richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote is reportedly close to buying Valenciennes, a team in the French Ligue 2. According to French media reports, the CEO of the Dangote Group is about to buy a 60 percent stake in the team.

The Dangote Group which is the largest industrial conglomerate in Africa, had previously expressed interest in buying Premier League team Arsenal, but the deal was unsuccessful. Valenciennes was founded in 1913, and it currently holds its home games at the Stade du Hainaut. The team has competed in Ligue 1 for 40 seasons and Ligue 2 for 36 and have won the Ligue 2 championship twice but have never won the Ligue 1 championship.

Players are overworked – Varane opens up on retirement from French national team

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has explained why he retired early from international duty for France. Varane had announced his retirement from international football in February at the age of 29. The French footballer who cited “suffocating” schedule as his reason for retirement, has further revealed that players are overworked, and it might get worse. He said; “The calendar is already more than full, the players are overworked and it will get even worse. I’m afraid that we will witness much shorter careers and that players will have to give up the France team very early because, physically or mentally, what we are asking for today is simply beyond limits. The fact that I announced the end of my international career and not having hidden the reasons, that resonated with many players. “Believe me, all the international players who play in Europe and never stop go through periods of poor form lasting several months, or they get injured. The young players who start in the France team there, those who have played in the World Cup, are going to have to make a lot of sacrifices if they want to stay on top for ten years. And it might be harder than what I’ve experienced.” Varane won 93 caps for his country, winning the World Cup in 2018, and is the 13th top appearance maker in France’s history. Belgium and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had also claimed that players are treated like “robots” in a recent interview, given the recent football schedule.

Didier Deschamps, Coach of France’s national team has admitted that some French people are supporting Lionel Messi to win the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

Addressing a press conference last night, Deschamps who is hoping to become the second coach in history to win the World Cup twice, said he and his team would do everything to achieve their objective.
He said;
“I know Argentina and maybe some French people would hope Lionel Messi can win the World Cup but we are going to do everything to achieve our objective.
“Most fans will probably support Argentina because they are Argentinian or will be rooting for that team.

“Argentinians are a very passionate people, they get behind their team and that is a positive thing, it is good to have an atmosphere like that in a World Cup final.
“But our opponents aren’t in the crowd, they are a team we face on the pitch and they are a good enough team to be worried about them.
“Both teams have the same objective and only one will come out with a third star.”

Third French player sick ahead of World Cup final against Argentina

The French team is suffering a fitness concern at the moment as some of their star players are sick ahead of the World Cup final against Argentina on Sunday, December 19.
Before the semi-final clash against Morocco, it was disclosed that Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot were sick. The duo also missed the match which ended 2-0 in favour of the French team.
While Upamecano and Rabiot are fighting to be ready to face Argentina on Sunday, France coach, Didier Deschamps has confirmed that a third member of his squad has been hit with illness.

Deschamps who told journalists that winger Kingsley Coman is sick, said;

“Coman also had a fever this morning. In Doha, the temperatures have dropped a bit and you still have air conditioning on all the time. We have had a few cases of flu-like symptoms.

“We are trying to be careful so that it does not spread and the players have put in a great effort on the pitch and obviously their immune systems suffer.”
Deschamps further revealed that Upamecano fell ill after the quarterfinal match against England. He said;

“Dayot Upamecano felt bad immediately after the game against England. It happens when you exert yourself so much, your body weakens and you are more prone to getting these viruses.

“We’re taking all the necessary precautions, we’re trying to make sure it doesn’t spread, but viruses are of course infectious and we have to take precautions against them.

“We’ll separate him from the others and from Adrien as well.”
France is looking to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil did in 1958 and 1962.
