How Ortom spent 9 hours in EFCC custody
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday grilled the immediate past governor of Benue, Mr Samuel Ortom, for nine hours before he was later released. Ortom arrived at the premises of the commission’s Zonal Headquarters, Makurdi, at 10 a.m. and left there at about 7 :00 p.m.

The Makurdi office of EFCC had invited him following allegations of corruption and alleged financial misappropriation during his tenure as a governor. A source who disclosed his presence at EFCC said, “Former governor Ortom is currently at our Makurdi zonal office in Benue State. He arrived at about 10 a.m. this morning, and he’s still there now. He was invited over an ongoing investigation concerning alleged misappropriation of funds during his time in office.’’ Ortom also enjoined his then-appointees to make themselves available for questioning if invited saying “Anytime you are invited by the EFCC, don’t be afraid to go, as for me I am not a coward to run away from EFCC, if they come for me I will follow them. “I have nothing to fear, I don’t have any investment in Europe all I have are in this state. If anyone accuses me of committing any crime let the person come and show me.” Reacting to the invitation, Ortom’s media aide, Mr Terver Akase, said that contrary to insinuations in some sections of the mass media, Ortom was not arrested but only honoured the commission’s invitation. “Ortom was neither arrested nor detained at the EFCC Zonal Headquarters in Makurdi,“ Akase said. According to him, the former governor has nothing to hide, adding that he would always be available for questioning by the anti-graft agency. “Ortom has nothing to hide regarding his stewardship in the state,” Akase said.

A few hours after President Bola Tinubu suspended the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, Mr Abdulkarim Chukkol has been appointed as Acting Chairman of the Commission. Recall that following weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him, Bawa was on Wednesday suspended and directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission pending the conclusion of his investigation. The new acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr Abdulkarim Chukkol However, in a new development on Thursday, the EFCC in a statement shared on its official Facebook page stated that Mr. Chukkol is the new Acting Chairman of the Commission. According to the statement, Chukkol is a consummate and vastly experienced investigator with a speciality in cybercrime and money laundering. Until this new role, Chukkol was the Director of Operations of the Commission. The statement read, “Following Tuesday, June 14, 2023, suspension of Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, as Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by the Federal Government, Mr. Abdulkarim Chukkol has stepped in as Acting Chairman of the Commission. “Until this new role, he was the Director of Operations of the Commission.
A pioneer staff of the Commission and an illustrious member of the EFCC Cadet Course One, Mr. Chukkol is a consummate and vastly experienced investigator with specialty in cybercrime and money laundering. “His Command appointments in the Commission include spells as Head of the Advance Fee Fraud and Cybercrime Sections of the Lagos and Abuja Zonal Commands between 2011 -2016, pioneer Commander of the Uyo Zonal Command in 2017 and Commander of Port Harcourt Zonal Command in 2020. “Chukkol has participated in several special operations with international law enforcement organizations and maintains close relationship with Law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, UK National Crime Agency, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), United States Secret Service, Australian Federal Police, Dutch Police, German Police, South African Police etc. “The acting EFCC Boss has worked closely with other Governments to develop law and infrastructure for carrying out law enforcement actions.
