Leeds United coach Sam Allardyce has lashed out at his players for giving out two penalties to Newcastle during a match today, May 13. Leeds United made a flying start when Luke Ayling hammered in the rebound from close range after Nick Pope parried Rodrigo’s powerful header in the 7th minute. The hosts had a chance to make it two in the 28th minute, but Patrick Bamford’s spot kick was well saved by Pope. It proved to be a key moment as Newcastle responded to the let-off with a penalty of their own under three and a half minutes later, and Wilson made no mistake with his low strike to level matters. The England forward then turned the match on its head in the 69th minute when he once again kept his nerve from the spot to snare his 10th goal in his last nine matches and his 17th Premier League goal of the campaign. Though the draw pushed Leeds United above Leicester to the 18th spot, they however remain in the relegation zone, a point adrift of Everton having played a game more. The outcome of the match left Allardyce frustrated as he accused his players of not listening to his instruction. He promised to “tell them off”. Allardyce said; “We have to stop giving penalties away. We gave one away last week as well. I’ve been talking about staying on your feet all week. I don’t like it when they ignore me. They’ll get told off next week, believe me.”
Klopp reveals he’s enjoying watching Chelsea struggle with their top players
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has said that watching Chelsea struggle this season despite their huge spending in the transfer market, has brought him so much joy. Chelsea is currently having one of their worst Premier League campaigns, sitting 12th on the table and 10 points clear of the relegation zone even after signing 16 players. Commenting on what has played out, Klopp told Sky Sports; “I feel a little bit for Chelsea to be honest, because it’s not going well, I think they’re a top, top team, but on the other side it’s good to see that you cannot just bring top players together and think it works out. You have to build a team and that’s what the guys there underestimated and gave their coaches a nearly impossible job to do. “You cannot have two dressing rooms, you cannot train on two pitches, you have to create relationships, you have to create team spirit, and that journey is why I’m a little bit happy about it. Chelsea will be fine in the end and they will be incredibly strong next year, but I’m using them just as an example. At the highest level, no, we cannot do it like that. And that’s what we will not do. You have to bring in the right players and build a new team. This team wrote a sensational story and now we start a new one, that’s it.”
Chelsea players are ‘angry and disappointed’
Chelsea star, Raheem Sterling has said that he and his teammates are disappointed with their abysmal performance this season. Sterling who joined the Blues from Manchester City last summer for a fee in the region of £47.5 million ($59.7m), shared his teammates’ frustration during an interview with The Sun. He further stated while he enjoyed his time at his previous club and won a lot of trophies, he is seeking to solve the new challenge at Chelsea. Sterling said; “We are disappointed when we come off the pitch and feel angry and disappointed. There are times when we finish a game you just sit in the changing room looking into space because you can’t understand what has just happened. It’s tough to take. You are always trying to look for a positive solution. There will be conversations, players trying to come to terms with what has happened in the last ten minutes or so. It’s not easy. “We need to look in the right direction and look to whoever comes in as the next manager to build for the future. I enjoyed my time at my previous club and won a lot of trophies. But I like a new challenge and this is the challenge I signed up for. It will taste even sweeter to win silverware coming from a moment like this than if you were winning every single week. The ability in the dressing room is undeniable and if we have someone who can take control of that we are more than capable of challenging every year.” Chelsea currently sits 12th on the EPL table in what has been described as their worst-ever Premier League campaign.
Arsenal players’ aeroplane goes up in flames
A potential disaster was avoided on Sunday night when an aeroplane transporting the Arsenal women’s players goes up in flames on the runway.
The team was returning from their first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg. While attempting to take off at the Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport, a bird flew into the engine of the aeroplane, causing a loud noise. This resulted in flames appearing from the left engine of the Boeing 737. Fortunately, the pilots promptly evacuated the passengers to safety. Arsenal issued a statement stating that the team arrived home safely on Monday morning. “Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening. “As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance,” the statement reads.
Arteta tackles Arsenal players after draw to Southampton
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shared his frustration with his team getting a draw against Southampton on Friday, April 21, with few matches to go this season. Arsenal found themselves 2-0 down in the first 15 minutes of the match, but they got a draw in the match following late goals from Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka earned a point for the home team. Shutting down claims of his players lacking confidence, Arteta stated that they should know they can’t give away goals again. He said; “The concern is turning around those moments, especially if the players in some moments are in doubt. In football you go through moments when you make errors and are not in a good moment, but you have to come away from that. “I don’t see a lack of confidence. When a team does that normally players start to hide. I didn’t see a single player do that. They were all willing to take risks and initiative. That’s why we got back from 3-1 to 3-3 and should have won the game. The confidence is there. It’s just those moments. At this level you cannot give the goals away that we did. Simple as that.” Arsenal are five points clear at the top of the Premier League, but their closest challengers Manchester City have two games in hands and the draw last night means the London club might have handed the title to Pep Guardiola’s team.
Players are overworked – Varane opens up on retirement from French national team
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has explained why he retired early from international duty for France. Varane had announced his retirement from international football in February at the age of 29. The French footballer who cited “suffocating” schedule as his reason for retirement, has further revealed that players are overworked, and it might get worse. He said; “The calendar is already more than full, the players are overworked and it will get even worse. I’m afraid that we will witness much shorter careers and that players will have to give up the France team very early because, physically or mentally, what we are asking for today is simply beyond limits. The fact that I announced the end of my international career and not having hidden the reasons, that resonated with many players. “Believe me, all the international players who play in Europe and never stop go through periods of poor form lasting several months, or they get injured. The young players who start in the France team there, those who have played in the World Cup, are going to have to make a lot of sacrifices if they want to stay on top for ten years. And it might be harder than what I’ve experienced.” Varane won 93 caps for his country, winning the World Cup in 2018, and is the 13th top appearance maker in France’s history. Belgium and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had also claimed that players are treated like “robots” in a recent interview, given the recent football schedule.
Canada Soccer threatens to sue female players if they go on strike
A day after players in Canada’s women’s national soccer team said they were going on strike over pay equity issues and budget cuts, Canada Soccer has threatened to sue the Canadian Soccer Players’ Association (CPSA) and the players who are attending a team camp in Florida.
The players preparing for the upcoming SheBelieves Cup in Orlando, Florida, had said on Friday, February 10, that they were taking job action due to budget cuts, equal pay issues, and an overall lack of support from Canada Soccer. TSN however reported that Canada Soccer threatened to file a lawsuit on Saturday, February 11, hours before the group’s president Nick Bontis and general secretary Earl Cochrane were scheduled to meet with team player representatives. The legal threat ratchets up the tension between the governing body for soccer in Canada and members of the national team, who are scheduled to play in the SheBelieves Cup next week and in the Women’s World Cup in five months. The players association requested a “no board report” from a government-appointed conciliator on Tuesday. The document, which was filed with the Ontario Minister of Labour, indicates a deal can’t be reached with Canada Soccer in its negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement for 2023. Canada will be playing the United States in the SheBelieves Cup on February 16, but it is unclear if the match will go on as planned.
We need players who are happy to play for Benfica
Roger Schmidt, coach of Portuguese football club, Benfica, has given a “bitter” reaction to the sale of Argentine midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, to Chelsea for a record fee of £106.8 million ($131.6m). The 21-year-old World Cup winner and Qatar 2022’s Young Player of the Tournament moved to Chelsea on Tuesday, January 31, the transfer deadline day, even after Schmidt continuously said he would stay at the club. Speaking to reporters after his side’s 3-0 league win at Arouca on Tuesday, the Benfica coach stated that they only need players who are happy to play for the club. He said; “To lose a good player in the winter transfer window is always difficult. But we also showed today that we are capable of playing good football without him, that the players are focused to get a lot of points, to become champions. That’s our goal. “Benfica is much bigger than one single player. We need players who are happy to play for Benfica, who are passionate. If some player decides to leave and a club [are willing to] pay the clause, then we cannot do anything. We accept [it] and look forward.”
Juventus loses 15 points in Serie A for artificially inflating players’ value
Juventus are now 10th on the Serie A table after 15 points were deducted from the total points they’ve accrued this season for mishandling and manipulating transfer finances.
The Italian Football Federation had launched an investigation into the way Juventus and other clubs dealt with player exchange deals. Following the discovery made after the club’s financial statements came under scrutiny by prosecutors and Italian market regulator CONSOB in the past months for alleged false accounting and market manipulation, the Italian FA (FIGC) announced the punishments those involved would be facing on Friday evening. Asides from the deduction of points accrued by the club, 11 executives, spanning from directors to board members, were banned for a lengthy period. Here’s the overview of the sanctions: Juventus: 15-point deduction from current Serie A standings Fabio Paratici, now a director at Tottenham: 30-month ban Andrea Agnelli, former chairman: 24-month ban Maurizio Arrivabene, former CEO: 24-month ban Federico Cherubini, current director: 16-month ban Pavel Nedved, former vice president: Eight-month ban Paolo Garimberti, former board member: Eight-month ban Enrico Vellano, former non-independent director: Eight-month ban Assia Grazioli-Venier, former board member: Eight-month ban Caitlin Hughes, former independent director: Eight-month ban Daniela Marilungo, former independent director: Eight-month ban Francesco Roncaglio, former board member: Eight-month ban Juventus were third in the Serie A table, 10 points behind leaders Napoli, but have slipped to 10th due to their punishment. Their hopes of winning the Serie A title are all but over and they must go on an impressive winning run to salvage European football. The club has already submitted an appeal for the penalty. The 15-point penalty is harsher than the nine-point deduction recommended by an FIGC prosecutor earlier in the day. In addition to Juventus, the following eight clubs were acquitted of any wrongdoing in the investigation: Sampdoria, Pro Vercelli, Genoa, Parma, Pisa, Empoli, Novara, and Pescara.
