Brighton have secured a 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Pervis Estupinan stealing the spotlight, coming back from injury. The Ecuadorian full-back, who had been sidelined since September, made a vital impact after coming on as a substitute due to an injury to Igor Julio. Brighton had earlier taken the lead with goals from Jack Hinshelwood and a penalty converted by Joao Pedro. Estupiñán made it three, before a beautiful effort by Pedro capped the win for the Seagulls. The defeat dealt a blow to Spurs’ top-four hopes, leaving them in a challenging position in the Premier League standings.
Postecoglou says he has not been given any assurance over Harry Kane
Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has revealed that he has not been given any assurances over the future of Harry Kane. Postecoglou departed Celtic to sign a long-term contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, tasked with trying to earn a return to the Champions League. Tottenham’s new coach, Ange Postecoglou. Source: Getty The Greek-Australian has been able to add to his squad, most notably acquiring the services of James Maddison from Leicester City, but developments involving Kane are a daily topic of debate. Kane has just a year remaining on his contract, a scenario which has inevitably led to interest from elsewhere with Bayern Munich seemingly standing as the frontrunners. Thomas Tuchel’s side are said to have made two bids for the England international, the latest offer allegedly in the region of €80m (£68.4m). It is also believed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is against cashing in on the 30-year-old this summer, regardless of the risk of a free transfer in 2024. At his first press conference as Spurs boss on Monday, July 10, Postecoglou was naturally quizzed excessively on the future of Harry Kane and his thoughts on the situation. He said; “I haven’t had any assurances and I wouldn’t expect any. Harry is already part of the history of this club and I want him involved here. My conversation with him will be about how we can make this club successful and that is what he wants as well. I’m trying to concentrate on the things that I know right now, and what I know right now is that Harry’s part of this squad. He’s looking forward to coming back to training, getting among the players back in here and we start working together.” Postecoglu also disclosed what he plans to tell Kane when he returns to pre-season training later this week. He added; “Harry is already part of the history of this club and I want him involved here. My conversation with him will be about how we can make this club successful and that is what he wants as well. I doubt it will be defined in the manner people think. I want to introduce myself to Harry, give him my vision, get an understanding from him over what his vision is and try be successful.” The North Londoners have just endured their worst campaign for 14 years, finishing in eighth position in the Premier League table and missing out on European football. Spurs are on the brink of adding a further attacking player to their ranks with Manor Solomon having agreed to leave Shakhtar Donetsk for the Lilywhites after his productive stint on loan at Fulham.
Tottenham close to appointing Ange Postecoglou as new manager
Premier League club, Tottenham is reportedly close to confirming Ange Postecoglou as its next manager. The Athletic reported that the former Australian national team boss has, in recent weeks, been earmarked as the likely successor to Antonio Conte. A deal for the 57-year-old is now expected to be finalized in the coming days. Postecoglou celebrating a win with Celtic. Postecoglou brought the Scottish Premiership title back to Celtic Park in his first season, and his team successfully defended their crown in 2022-23 while also scooping the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup to complete a treble. However, Postecoglou refused to commit his future to Celtic following the club’s latest trophy. He told reporters after their last title win; “I anticipate enjoying this moment for the next 24-48 hours, as long as I can, before someone drags me away and takes my attention away from enjoying something that’s been hard-earned.” Late last week, popular journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham was scheduled to discuss the role with Postecoglou after the Scottish Cup on Monday or Tuesday. Romano tweeted an update on Sunday afternoon, confirming the Athletic’s earlier report. Despite Tottenham being in a state of confusion, even disarray, the open role will appeal greatly to Postecoglou, who hasn’t yet managed in Europe’s top five leagues. Postecoglou has earned huge admirers in the game for his expansive and entertaining work at Celtic. The Australian is commonly seen as one of the most exciting managers in world football. Tottenham on the other hand, endured a miserable campaign during the 2022/23 season, despite remaining unbeaten in nine of their opening 11 Premier League matches. The Lilywhites’ form fell off a cliff either side of the World Cup in Qatar, which resulted in Conte heading for the exit. The Italian’s interim replacement Cristian Stellini lasted less than a month before ex-midfielder Ryan Mason steered the ship for the final month of the campaign. Postecoglou at a Celtic match. In taking on the Spurs job, Postecoglou would become the fourth permanent manager employed by Daniel Levy since the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in late-2018. Tottenham has been unable to get their hands on any silverware since they lifted the League Cup under Juande Ramos in 2008. Mauricio Pochettino did lead the club to the Champions League final in 2019, where they were ultimately beaten by Liverpool. And they also reached the Carabao Cup final in 2021. But the team lost to Manchester City on that occasion and haven’t realistically been in contention for any major trophies over the last two years.
