The protest ensued barely an hour after the Red Devils released their new home kit for the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, June 27. It later reopened to continue selling merchandise. United had been expecting a congregation of fans after the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) released a statement confirming plans for a protest. It read; “The overwhelming majority of United fans want to see a conclusion to this protracted sale process with the majority supporting a full sale, at least based on our soundings. Protest planned on Tuesday to make that message clear.” 🗣 A woman was heckled and booed by protesters after shopping at the Megastore this morning…#MUFC | #ManUtd pic.twitter.com/NOHB1SsoOF — Man United News (@ManUtdMEN) June 27, 2023 The protest came as Manchester United projected record annual revenue of up to £640 million in the current financial year. Revenue guidance for the current financial year was raised to a record £630m to £640m in the third quarter financial results for the period ending March 31, 2023, which were released on Tuesday, June 27. This is driven by record match attendance and matchday revenues. Ticket sales for the 2022-23 season surpassed the previous record set in 2016-17, with 2.4m sold.

At the moment, it appears that Qatari Sheikh Jassim is the front-runner to take over the reins of the club, however, there’s been also a lot of speculation about Sir Jim Ratcliffe, combined with the possibility that the Glazers don’t sell up at all! This would be the worst-case scenario for fans, who are desperate to part ways with the duo who have seemingly sucked the club of their finances for years now.

The English footballer wrote on Twitter; “My time at Manchester United has been nothing short of incredible. To wear this shirt just once, to wear this badge and represent everyone associated with it, was an honour. I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played alongside. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could. I did everything the medical team asked of me. I never left a stone unturned in the pursuit of living my dream and having the opportunity to represent Manchester United. It’s not a time to be sad. It’s a time to look back, for me and my family, and be happy that I managed to live a dream at United. I want to say thank you to everyone who has helped me at Manchester United, where I’ve made friends for life.” Letter to the fans. pic.twitter.com/fmNV1eR9np — Phil Jones (@PhilJones4) May 19, 2023 The centre back told Manchester United’s website; “It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years. There’s no denying that. There is no hiding away from that. My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more. And, you know, I’ve missed playing football. I missed it. You grow up playing football and all you want to do is play football. It’s all I’ve known, from such a young age, is to do what you love doing for a living. I’ve been fortunate enough to do that, albeit not as much as I would have liked. Phil Jones bids farewell to Manchester United after injury-ravaged 12 years at Old Trafford “I’ve worked tirelessly hard. I literally left no stone unturned. I tried to get back as quick as I could, every time I was out in the last couple of years. I think the highlight for me would have to be the Wolves game [his return from injury last season], when I came back. That was just a moment that I’ll never forget. It gives me goosebumps now, thinking about it. I mean I worked so, so hard to get to that stage of fitness. That was a huge, huge moment in my career and the fans, that day, were incredible. The love that they showed me for that game, the passion that they showed, was sensational. And I can’t thank them enough for that. They’ve been a constant support throughout my time here.”

Garnacho was a second half substitute as ten-men United were held to a goalless draw by relegation-battling Southampton in Sunday’s Premier League action. The Argentine did not complete the match, however, after sustaining a knock following a heavy tackle by Kyle Walker-Peters. The tackle by the Saints right-back was a clean one but left Garnacho in a heap inside the penalty area and requiring lengthy treatment. The forward was able to return to the pitch and had appeared to shake off the worst of the injury but he looked to be playing in a small degree of pain. Erik Ten Hag withdrew the forward late in the game to introduce combative midfielder Fred, leading to fears that Garnacho may have been making his situation worse.

Garnacho was later seen wearing a grey protective boot and using the aid of two crutches as he exited the stadium after his right ankle was caught by Kyle Walker-Peters’ challenge. If the Argentine is to face a lengthy spell on the sideline, it would come as a blow to United, who have Europa League and FA Cup fixtures to come in the coming week. United boss Erik ten Hag did not seem overly concerned with the injury, however. Speaking at a post-match press conference, he said;

“He was limping a bit after the tackle so in the end they bring on another striker, we were already down to 10 men.” Garnacho has made 15 appearances in the Premier League this season and four of those have been starts. The 18-year-old is close to signing a new deal to extend his Old Trafford stay.
