Lagos State to charge Chrisland school with involuntary manslaughter

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice is set to charge Chrisland High School, Ikeja and some of its staff members with “Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts” over the death of Whitney Adeniran.

According to a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs, will be facing charges for the death of a 12-year-old student, Whitney Adeniran, who passed away during a sports event on February 9, 2023. Lagos State’s statement charging Chrisland School for Involuntary Manslaughter “On the 9th of February 2023, Whitney Omodesola Adeniran a student of Chrisland High School, Ikeja aged 12 years, slumped during the Inter-house Sports organised by the School at the Agege Sports Stadium and was subsequently rushed to Agege Central Hospital, Agege, Lagos, where she was confirmed “brought in dead” (BID) by the doctor on duty. “The case was referred to the Nigerian Police Force which carried out a thorough investigation with the help of other agencies. The file was subsequently forwarded to the DPP’s Office on Monday 20th March, 2023, for review of the duplicate case file. “On the 23rd of March, 2023, the DPP issued his Legal Advice and came to the conclusion that a prima facie case of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts had been established against the school, some members of staff and one of the vendors. They will therefore be charged with the offences of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts contrary to Sections 224 & 251 of the Criminal Law, Ch C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015. “Information will be filed in accordance with the legal advice issued by the DPP. Certified True Copies of the Legal advice are available on the Ministry of Justice website (www.lagosstatemoj.org.).”

Spyro speaks on inspiration behind hit song, ‘Who’s Your Guy’

Fast rising musician, Oludipe Oluwasanmi David better known as Spyro has spoken on the inspiration behind his viral track as he reveals that he seeks God’s direction before releasing his songs.

The singer who became a sensation after releasing his hit track ‘Who’s Your Guy‘ made this known while speaking in an interview with Punch. He said that he believes that there is a spiritual and physical part to everything and he ensures that he takes the spiritual part equally serious in his music. Spyro said: “I usually go into God’s presence to seek His face, His blessings and directions, days before releasing any song. I don’t do anything without first enquiring from God. I am of the opinion that there is a physical part to things, and also a spiritual part; so I make sure I take that spiritual part seriously. One needs someone working behind the scenes for one.” On the remix of his popular song, the singer revealed that it had been Tunde Ednut, an Instagram blogger, that had reached out to him to take the song to another level.

He said: “Tunde Ednut (singer-turned-blogger) reached out to me and said we needed to take the song to the next level, and we should do a remix. He asked me who I had in mind. We went through a couple of names together, before agreeing on Tiwa. I chose Tiwa because I knew she would bring in as much value to the song as I thought; and, she actually did. We connected on different levels. She is an amazing person with a good heart, and I love the fact that she is passionate about the things she does. I am happy I made the remix with her.” Speaking on what inspired the ‘Who’s your guy’ song, he said: “It was actually a love song when I first recorded in 2021 as freestyle. However, when I wanted to release it in 2022, I decided to revamp it and make it more relatable to as many people as possible. It’s not just about lovers; ‘one’s guy’ could be anyone, ranging from family and friends.”

Everton charged by Premier League for allegedly breaching FFP rules

The Premier League has charged Everton FC with alleged breaches of its Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, relating to last season. The club which has been referred to an independent commission is said to have recorded losses of £371.8m ($388.3m) over the past three years. According to Premier League rules, clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105m ($128.3m) over that time. The Premier League executives were made aware of Everton’s situation following a joint letter written by Leeds chief executive, Angus Kinnear, and Burnley chairman, Alan Pace. At the time of their joint letter, both clubs were threatened with relegation and both also indicated their right to make legal claims against the Premier League and Everton. Confirming the charges, the Premier League said in a statement; “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred an alleged breach of the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules by Everton Football Club to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4. The assessment period for which it is alleged that the Club is in breach is the period ending Season 2021/22. “The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League’s website. The League will be making no further comment until that time.” Reacting to the development, Everton said they are disappointed with the decision, adding that they are “prepared to robustly defend” their position to the commission. The club said in a statement; “Everton Football Club is disappointed to hear of the Premier League’s decision to refer an allegation of a breach of Profit & Sustainability regulations to an independent commission for review. “The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations. Everton is prepared to robustly defend its position to the commission. The club has, over several years, provided information to the Premier League in an open and transparent manner and has consciously chosen to act with the utmost good faith at all times.”
