Michael Phelps Married Secretly Before Rio Olympics
U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps secretly got married to his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Johnson in June 2016, two months before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
According to TMZ who have obtained their marriage record, the couple has been married since June 13. The ceremony went down in Paradise Valley, AZ, where they just moved to, and was officiated by Peter Carlisle, Michael’s agent and longtime friend.
‘Such a memorable night with my lil fambam, boomer obviously didn’t want to hold still,’
Nicole shared on Instagram on their supposed wedding day.
Phelps got engaged to the former Miss California USA in 2015 and they both have a son together. The newborn was welcomed in May 2016, just a month to their wedding.
Rio 2016 Olympics was the last tournament for Phelps, who announced his retirement (again, having first retired after the 2012 Olympics but returned in 2014) after winning five gold and one silver at this year’s games, taking his total Olympics medal haul to 28, with 23 of them gold.
‘Done, done, done — and this time I mean it, I wanted to come back and finish my career how I wanted and this was the cherry on top of the cake,’ the athlete told Today
‘Between now and London, I was so much more emotional during these Games, I think that showed at times on camera, that’s the difference. Because I knew this was the last time. I knew this was the last race that I ever had, the last Olympics that I ever had. And everything just really hit hard.’
Phelps made his Olympic Games debut in 2000 at the age of 15, becoming the youngest male to make a U.S. Olympic swim team in 68 years.
The most decorated Olympian emerged as the first ever male American to compete at his fifth Games at this year’s tournament.
