Court of Appeal upholds election of Dapo Abiodun

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has confirmed the re-election of Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Governor of Ogun State. Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh, in the majority judgment, dismissed the appeal filed by the People’s Democratic Party candidate, Ladi Adebutu, in the 2023 governorship election. Conversely, Justice Jane Esienanwan Inyang, in the minority judgment, allowed the appeal and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election within 90 days. It would be recalled that in the election, Abiodun secured victory over Oladipupo Adebutu, who garnered 262,383 votes, along with 12 other candidates. Abiodun emerged triumphant with a margin of 13,915 votes.

Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the governorship election in Ogun State, by the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC).

INEC State Returning Officer in the state, Kayode Adebowale, said the APC candidate who is also the incumbent Governor of the state, scored 276,298 votes to emerge the winner of the keenly contested election. Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ladi Adebutu, polled 262,383 votes to come second, thus trailing the winner with 13,915 votes. INEC declares APC’s Dapo Abiodun as winner of Ogun governorship election Biyi Otegbeye of the ADC polled 94, 754 votes to come third. Abiodun won in 12 local government areas while Mr. Adebutu won in eight local government areas. A total of 13 political parties took part in Saturday’s election held across the state.

The statement partly read; “Governor Abiodun, rather than procuring people’s votes, had embarked on political campaigns to showcase his scorecard, commissioned landmark projects and canvassed for votes for all the All Progressives Congress candidates as well as for his reelection.”
