The announcement comes after Godwin Emefiele’s suspension as CBN’s governor. Niara note and dollar exchange It is believed that banks can now sell forex at market-determined rates, suggesting Nigeria is now operating a freely floating exchange rate. This is in line with the promise of President Bola Tinubu to unify the multiple exchange rate in the market. Explaining the reason behind Emefiele’s suspension, the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey disclosed that the suspension of the CBN governor was based on an ongoing investigation as well as planned reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector. The suspended CBN Gov, Godwin Emefiele Emefiele was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms. The suspended CBN governor assumed office in 2014 after succeeding Lamido Sanusi, who was equally suspended from office under controversial circumstances by President Goodluck Jonathan few months before the expiration of his tenure.

CBN denies ordering banks to accept N500, N1000 notes
The Director of Corporate Communication at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, debunks reports claiming that the CBN instructed banks to collect old N500 and N1,000 notes.
In a Tweet via the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, Mr Osita released a statement affirming that the report about deposit money banks accepting old notes is false. He insisted on President Buhari’s order to only roll out old N200 notes. The statement reads; “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorised messages, quoting the CBN as having authorised the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes. “For the avoidance of doubt, and in line with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, the CBN has been directed to ONLY re-issue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 60 days up to April 10. “Members of the public should, therefore, disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject. “Media practitioners are advised to PLEASE verify any information from the correct sources before publication.”
CBN instructs banks to collect old N500, N1,000 notes
Banks have been instructed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to accept the old N500 and N1,000 notes from their customers who have obtained a reference code generated from the CBN website.
According to sources from multiple banks, their branches were recently instructed by the head office to comply with this directive. A top CBN official confirmed the directive: “Yes we have directed them to collect the old N500 and N1,000 from customers, subject to maximum of N500,000.” It is recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari directed that the old N500 and N1,000 notes are no longer considered legal tender, and individuals in possession of these notes should take them to the CBN. In response, the CBN established a portal for individuals to register how much they wish to deposit and receive a reference code to confirm their registration. This reference code can then be used to deposit the old notes at any CBN office throughout the country. However, investigations suggest that due to the high number of people visiting CBN offices to deposit their old N500 and N1,000 notes, the CBN have authorized banks to collect these notes from their customers. A bank official and branch head informed Vanguard that their branch did not open to customers today due to safety concerns, but they plan to begin collecting old notes from customers tomorrow (Saturday).
CBN issues fresh order to banks
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed commercial banks to start issuing new naira notes at the counter. According to the governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, the instruction was ignited by the outcry of Nigerians over the difficulty in getting the new naira notes.
Thus, the new order became necessary as a way of relieving Nigerians from the challenges they are currently experiencing with getting access to the new notes. He added that this will result in reduced queues at ATMs across the country. He also assured Nigerians that the new notes will be available for collection at the counter. This is coming a few days Nigerians lamented and protested about the shortage of the new notes. Reacting to this, @mattsalako706 said: “The CBN is confused about the policy they introduced. They have used it to cause hardship in the country. This is so sad!” @Yusuf said: “The implementation of this policy has turned out to be the most chaotic economic policy implementation in the history of this country. It’ll be grand naivety to suggest this wasn’t done with a sinister political aim.” @ADDEY203 commented: “CBN’s confusion is even confused”! Reversing itself every now and then. This smirks of hasty, not well-thought-out decisions. Even this will not solve the issue.”
