Chimamanda slams US and UK for congratulating Tinubu, calls election flawed

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Notable Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie criticized the US and the UK for congratulating Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the flawed elections.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Adichie wrote an open letter to US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, citing reports of widespread violence, ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, and other electoral malpractices that occurred during the February 25 poll. In an article published in The Atlantic on Thursday, Adichie also mentioned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to fulfil its promise to upload election results from polling units in real-time via its result viewing portal. Chimamanda noted that the congratulatory statement from the US State Department itself acknowledged that Nigerians were frustrated with the flawed process. She urged Biden and Rishi not to endorse the results of an undemocratic process and to take action towards the current state of Nigeria. Chimamanda slams US and UK for congratulating Tinubu, calls election flawed Chimamanda Adichie’s Open Letter to US Biden and UK’s Rishi “How surprising then to see the U.S. State Department congratulate Tinubu on March 1. ‘We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted and the shortcomings of technical elements that were used for the first time in a presidential election cycle. “And yet the process was described as a “competitive election” that “represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy.” “American intelligence surely cannot be so inept. A little homework and they would know what is manifestly obvious to me and so many others: The process was imperilled not by technical shortcomings but by deliberate manipulation. “I hope, President Biden, that you do not personally share this cordial condescension. You have spoken of the importance of a “global community for democracy,” and the need to stand up for “justice and the rule of law.” “A global community for democracy cannot thrive in the face of apathy from its most powerful member. Why would the United States, which prioritizes the rule of law, endorse a president-elect who has emerged from an unlawful process? “I hope it will not surprise you, President Biden, if I argue that the American response to the Nigerian election also bears the faint taint of that word, compromised, because it is so removed from the actual situation in Nigeria as to be disingenuous. “Has the United States once again decided that what matters in Africa is not democracy but stability? (Perhaps you could tell British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who quickly congratulated Tinubu, that an illegitimate government in a country full of frustrated young people does not portend stability.) “Or is it about that ever-effulgent nemesis China, as so much of U.S. foreign policy now invariably seems to be? The battle for influence in Africa will not be won by supporting the same undemocratic processes for which China is criticized.”

Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State urges Governor Ademola Adeleke to tackle the mounting insecurity in the state.

Chairman calls out Gov. Adeleke over rising kidnaps, death of APC members in Osun

The party expressed concern about the recent spike in violent attacks, particularly in the lead-up to, during, and after the general elections across the country. Osun State is said to be renowned for being one of the most peaceful states in the country until the 2023 general elections, particularly in the Osun East Senatorial District encompassing the Ife and Ijesa regions. Tajudeen Lawal announced in a statement on Monday, April 3, 2023, that more than 30 members of the opposition APC were reportedly murdered by thugs believed to be backed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Governor of Osun state Ademola Adeleke

Furthermore, the party condemned the kidnaps that transpired on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, and Friday, March 31, on the Osogbo-Ikirun road. Statement on attacks in Osun State reads in part “As of the time of making this statement with the exception of a woman whose release was secured by the police on Sunday, the victims were said to still be in captivity. “A caring governor would have either condemned the two kidnapping incidents in his territory within three days or rushed back from Abuja as the number one security officer of the state. “It is saddening that as I speak, Governor Adeleke has no comment of condemnation to his credit on all the murder incidents that happened so far in his four-month-old administration. “His handling of Osun affairs has shown that governance of a state is not a tea party which is the reason why it is not the best arrangement to make the state a laboratory for greenhorns in the management of the affairs of human beings and resources.”

Keyamo petitions DSS, calls for arrest of Peter Obi for alleged incitement

Keyamo petitions DSS, calls for arrest of Peter Obi for alleged incitement

Festus Keyamo (SAN), the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has petitioned the DSS, urging them to arrest and prosecute Peter Obi and his vice, Datti Baba-Ahmed for incitement.

Festus keyamo

He accused the Labour Party’s presidential candidate and vice of committing “incitement and treasonable felony” through their comments, which he describes as incendiary and capable of causing rebellion. As the chief spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Keyamo believes that in the post-election period, it is important to calm tensions, reduce the temperature, and initiate the healing process. The petition was addressed to the Director-General of the DSS and was dated March 23.

Keyamo petitions DSS, calls for arrest of Peter Obi for alleged incitement

“The President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, issued a statement to this effect a few days ago. However, it appears the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed are not prepared to toe this conciliatory path for the sake of peace and national cohesion, whilst exercising their rights to pursue duly laid down constitutional means of addressing their grievances,” he stated. Keyamo pointed out that following the announcement of the presidential election results, Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed, have been appearing on various media outlets and making inciting remarks and allegations about the declaration of the President-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Keyamo ‘s Statement on the Arrest of Peter Obi and Datti “These comments and claims are made, not just within the boundaries of exercising their rights to freedom of speech and the freedom to air their grievances publicly, but they have since crossed the line to call for the outright truncation of democracy by insisting on the adoption of other processes outside the contemplation of our Constitution. “In some cases, their privies have even called for the establishment of an Interim Government. “The latest of such are the comments made by Datti Baba-Ahmed on behalf of himself and Mr. Peter Obi on Channels TV on Wednesday, March 22, wherein he threatened that if the President-elect was sworn in on May 29, it would ‘signal the end of democracy’. “Posing as an accuser, a judge and a jury all by himself, he unilaterally declared the duly elected President-elect as ‘unconstitutional’ and, in a subliminal manner, threatened mayhem if the President-elect was sworn in on May 29. “I also have it on good authority that Mr. Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed have camped some youths in a popular hotel in Abuja with the sole aim of instructing them to push out inciting messages everyday on social media in order to cause panic and fear within the federation and to incite people to riot and social unrest. “It is noteworthy that Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed have submitted elections petitions to the courts for adjudication, but their conducts and utterances amount to a subversion of the processes they have instituted in court and a subversion of our Constitution and the laid-down processes for addressing disputes and grievances. “These conduct and utterances are a build-up to something more sinister and it is important you rein them in now! “In the circumstance, I submit this petition in my personal capacity as a patriotic Nigerian to invite/arrest, interrogate and after investigation, if necessary, charge both individuals to court for their conduct which amounts to incitement and treasonable felony.”
