Newcastle United’s Champions League campaign is left hanging after a 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund left them on the brink of exit. This defeat comes just over a month after Newcastle’s impressive victory against PSG, which had raised hopes of a successful campaign.

Eddie Howe’s tactical decisions, including starting youngster Lewis Hall and benching first-choice wingers Miguel Almiron and Anthony Gordon, have now been criticized. Borussia Dortmund managed to stifle Newcastle with goals from Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt.
Speaking to Newcastle’s website, Harvey Barnes said; “I’m delighted. It’s an amazing club and for me it’s a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that’s doing exciting things, so I’m absolutely buzzing to be here. “I think it’s an attacker’s dream to come into a team like this; it’s high paced, it’s physically demanding, but you can see the rewards of that with the chances and the goals scored, so I think I’ll certainly suit the style.” Barnes, who travelled to Tyneside last week to undergo a medical, is the third addition to a squad which finished fourth in last season’s Premier League with AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali and Odense striker Yankuba Minteh, who has been sent out on loan to Feyenoord, having arrived earlier this month.

Source: Getty A graduate of the Foxes’ Academy, he made 187 appearances for the club, which was relegated to the Sky Bet Championship at the end of last season, and is an FA Cup winner as well as a full England international. Despite scoring 13 Premier League goals last season Barnes could not prevent Leicester from being relegated to the Championship and was also courted by Aston Villa, Tottenham, and West Ham this summer before opting to join Howe. Although Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian majority owners are nothing if not wealthy, their room for transfer market manoeuvre this summer is restricted by Financial Fair Play regulations and Howe appears resigned to postponing his attempts to sign an extra centre-forward until at least January.

They have prepared for life in the Championship by signing Harry Winks and Conor Coady. Newcastle had already announced the £60 million signing of Sandro Tonali earlier this week. The deal made the midfielder the most expensive Italian of all time, £11m more than the £49m Chelsea paid for Jorginho in 2018. The star has penned a five-year contract, which includes the option of a further 12 months, at St. James’ Park and can’t wait to get started for his new club.

He made his loan move permanent the following year after a successful debut season. He made 48 appearances in all competitions last season and helped Milan finish fourth in Serie A. He also helped Milan reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2007. The Sun reported that Newcastle is eager to work out a loan deal but the Red Devils have no intention of bolstering the ranks of a top-four rival without being financially rewarded. Aston Villa are watching keenly as they want extra cover in the squad for their European campaign. Villa would have a better chance of a loan deal being accepted by United. Tottenham are linked with the 30-year-old but are yet to make a play. Leicester was also keen on signing the defender but relegation put an end to that idea. United players will reportedly get a pay rise following qualification for the Champions League. And Maguire’s current wages of around £200,000 a week would already be hard to match by most Premier rivals.

Source: Getty Maguire lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s side at the start of the season with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane the manager’s first-choice pairing. Victor Lindelof was also the Dutchman’s preferred option during the final stages of the season with left-back Luke Shaw also selected ahead of Maguire on a number of occasions. Ten Hag recently suggested his skipper is not happy with the situation and opened the door for him to leave Old Trafford this summer. United are thought to be working on a deal to sign Napoli star Kim Min-Jae and could cash in on Maguire to help fund that move. The Red Devils fans may need to ready themselves for weeks or even months of rumours about Maguire with no firm decision emerging just yet.
