Court rejects Tinubu’s request to strike out APM’s petition challenging presidential election
The Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC on Monday rejected an attempt by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the Allied People’s Movement (APM) in its petition challenging his qualification for the February 25, 2023, Presidential election. Tinubu, through his lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, had sought to use a Supreme Court judgment delivered on May 26, 2023, to terminate the APM’S petition, but the request was turned down. President Bola Tinubu The grouse of Tinubu was that the Apex Court had resolved the sole issue raised in the petition of the APM in the judgment in a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He sought to move the Court to invoke the spirit and letters of the Supreme Court judgment to halt the hearing into the APM’s petition. The Presiding Justice of the Court, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, however, disagreed with Tinubu and held that the party cannot be shut out in the face of fair hearing. Justice Tsammani asked Tinubu to keep his objections against the hearing of the petition to the final address stage of the court’s proceedings. Similar objections raised by APC through its counsel, Charles Edosomwen SAN, against the petition on the same ground were turned down by PEPC for the same reason. Earlier, the APM, through its lawyer, Mr Gideon Ijiagbonya, had informed the Court of receipt of the Supreme Court judgment being sought to be used to terminate its petition. The lawyer said that upon perusal of the judgment by the Supreme Court, he and his legal team concluded that there is life in the petition and applied for its hearing. He, however, sought adjournment till June 26 to enable him to obtain a vital document from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish his case. Justice Tsammani, in a brief ruling, rejected a week-long adjournment and fixed Wednesday, June 21, for the hearing of the petition.

The Nigerian government‘s abrupt removal of fuel subsidy has led to the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) instructing its members to cease their services across the country. Credit: Business Day President Bola Tinubu, in his inaugural address on Monday, declared the end of the petroleum subsidy regime, deeming it unsustainable. In response to this announcement, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) directed its outlets to sell fuel at a significantly increased price range of N480 to N570 per litre, representing a nearly 200 percent surge from the initial price below N200. On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared its intention to organize a nationwide protest on the following Wednesday if the NNPCL refused to revert to the previous price regime in the oil sector. The Nigerian Union of Journalists also threatened to participate in the strike action. In a letter to its members on Sunday, the NUEE explained that its decision was a result of the NLC emergency national executive council (NEC) meeting, held on June 2 at the Labour House in Abuja, to address the sudden removal of fuel subsidy, which was causing significant hardships for Nigerians and contributing to increased inflation in the economy. The statement directed all national, state, and chapter executives to mobilize their members in full compliance with the directive, with the withdrawal of services nationwide commencing from 00.00 hours on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. “To this effect, all National, State and Chapter executives are requested to start the mobilisation of our members in total compliance with this directive,” the statement said. “Please note that withdrawal of Services nationwide commences from 0.00 hours of Wednesday, June 7, 2023,” the statement reads in part.

Canada Soccer threatens to sue female players if they go on strike
A day after players in Canada’s women’s national soccer team said they were going on strike over pay equity issues and budget cuts, Canada Soccer has threatened to sue the Canadian Soccer Players’ Association (CPSA) and the players who are attending a team camp in Florida.
The players preparing for the upcoming SheBelieves Cup in Orlando, Florida, had said on Friday, February 10, that they were taking job action due to budget cuts, equal pay issues, and an overall lack of support from Canada Soccer. TSN however reported that Canada Soccer threatened to file a lawsuit on Saturday, February 11, hours before the group’s president Nick Bontis and general secretary Earl Cochrane were scheduled to meet with team player representatives. The legal threat ratchets up the tension between the governing body for soccer in Canada and members of the national team, who are scheduled to play in the SheBelieves Cup next week and in the Women’s World Cup in five months. The players association requested a “no board report” from a government-appointed conciliator on Tuesday. The document, which was filed with the Ontario Minister of Labour, indicates a deal can’t be reached with Canada Soccer in its negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement for 2023. Canada will be playing the United States in the SheBelieves Cup on February 16, but it is unclear if the match will go on as planned.
