We’ve banned importation of noodles – NAFDAC

We’ve banned importation of Indomie noodles – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced an investigation into the news of recalled noodles by Taiwan and Malaysia authorities. It was reported days ago that Taiwan and Malaysia authorities discovered ethylene oxide, a cancer-causing agent, in the product. Reaffirming a ban on importation of Indomie noodles, the Director-General of the Agency, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, said on Monday, May 1, that the Director of the Food Lab Services Directorate has been engaged and has started working on the methodology for the analysis. It is also expected that the agency’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate will on Tuesday, May 2, randomly sample Indomie noodles including the seasoning from the production facilities while Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate samples from the markets. Adeyeye said; ”Indomie noodles have been banned from being imported into the country for many years. It is one of the foods on the government prohibition list. It is not allowed in Nigeria, and therefore not registered by NAFDAC. We’ve banned importation of Indomie noodles – NAFDAC “What we are doing is an extra caution to ensure that the product is not smuggled in, and if so, our post marketing surveillance would detect it. We also want to be sure that the spices used for the Indomie and other noodles in Nigeria are tested. “That is what NAFDAC Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) and Post Marketing Surveillance (PMS) are doing this week at the production facilities and in the market, respectively.” The NAFDAC DG also promised that Nigerians will be duly updated with the outcome of the investigation.

“We’ve resolved fuel and cash scarcity issues, 2023 elections will hold as planned”

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu assures Nigerians that forthcoming elections will hold regardless of fuel and cash scarcity issues.

"We’ve resolved fuel and cash scarcity issues, 2023 elections will hold as planned" - INEC

Mahmood Yakubu spoke after a meeting with the Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, 8th of February. His revelation trails the many protests that have rocked different parts of the country over the scarcity of fuel and cash hoarding of new Naira notes. Yakubu said: “I can tell you two of these challenges quickly. The first one is the availability of petroleum products. We had a meeting with the National Union of Road Transport Workers and they raised that as an issue of concern. Immediately after that meeting, we interfaced with the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and right now there’s a technical community working. The idea is for them to avail us the use of their over 900 land mega stations as well as floating mega stations nationwide for the purpose of stocking products to ensure that the commission doesn’t suffer any encumbrances in the movement of personnel and materials for the elections. The second one is the currency issue. Again, we had an engagement yesterday with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. And he assured us that the commission will not suffer encumbrances on that score. Fortunately for us, all our accounts, national and state are with the apex bank. So, we raised those challenges and we have found a solution to those challenges. So, be rest assured that the elections will hold as scheduled on the 25th of February for the national and on the 11th of March for the state’s elections.”

“We’ve notified the police” – Headies threatens to disqualify Portable over death threat to co-nominees

"We’ve notified the police" - Headies threatens to disqualify Portable over death threat to co-nominees

The organizers of the Headies, a popular music awards show, has threatened to disqualify Portable following his death threat to co-nominees of its 2022 edition.
The singer, who was nominated to vie in the ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘Best Street-Hop Artiste’ categories had threatened to kill anyone who wins any of the categories in his place.

Portable made this threat in a video on Wednesday as he claimed other nominees are no match for him
Consequently, the Headies in its public announcement on Friday said it might be forced to disqualify the singer if he fails to retract his statement and issue an apology on his social media pages.
The statement reads in part: “We have notified the Nigerian police of Mr. Okokiola’s actions to fellow nominees.

“Also, demand for the immediate retraction of the video as well as a written apology to nominees in both categories and to The Headies has been made.
“Should Mr. Okikiola fail to meet our demands, we will not only disqualify him from participating in The Headies but also enforce the instrumentality of the law.
“The general public are hereby implored to disregard the video and stop the dissemination of same in the public space.”
Portable’s Threat
A day after bagging double nominations in the ‘Best Street-Hop Artiste’ and ‘Rookie of the Year’ categories, Portable publicly warned the Headies that there will be a big problem if his two awards are given to other artistes.
Adding that no one comes close to him in the category of which he was nominated, the raving singer had boasted that he remains the king of street music.

"Headies Award is a big joke!" - Tweeps drag organizers as they question why Portable overshadowed Kizz Daniel, Victony

Most worrisome, he threatened the show’s organisers not to give his award to someone else.

“We’ve been able to quietly remove subsidy from electricity”

"We've been able to quietly remove subsidy from electricity"

On Saturday, the Nigerian government revealed that there are no more subsidies in the electricity sector as it has succeeded in quietly removing subsidy from electricity tariffs across the country.

Speaking at a meeting of African Finance Ministers and the International Monetary Fund, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who made the revelation added that plans are also being made to remove subsidy from fuel.
In her words: “We are cleaning up our subsidies. We had a setback; we were to remove fuel subsidy by July this year but there was a lot of pushback from the polity. We have elections coming and because of the hardship that companies and citizens went through during the COVID-19 pandemic, we just felt that the time was not right, so we pulled back on that.
“But we have been able to quietly implement subsidy removal in the electricity sector and as we speak, we don’t have subsidies in the electricity sector. We did that incrementally over time by carefully adjusting the prices at some levels while holding the lower levels down.
“The current review that we are doing is to hold the subsidy at the level in which it is planned… We are currently doing a budget amendment to accommodate incremental subsidy (removal) as a result of the reversal of the decision and we want to cap it at that.

“Hopefully, the parliament will agree with us and we are able to continue with our plan for subsidy (removal) otherwise the way things are going we will not be able to predict where the deficit will be as a result of the fluctuation in the global market.”
