He earned a Bachelor of Sociology degree from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State in 1978. In 1986, he received a Master’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations (MLR) from the same university. From May 1999 to May 2007, Akume was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Benue State. George Akume was the first Benue State governor to serve two consecutive terms. In addition, the now-defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chose him to represent the Benue North West senatorial constituency in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a senator. He then served as Senate Minority Leader from June 2011 until June 2015. During his brief time in the Senate, the former governor chaired the Senate Committee on the Army. Senator Orke Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) beat him in the 2019 Senate elections. On August 21, 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed George as Minister of Special Obligations and Intergovernmental Affairs.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Senator George Akume, a former governor of Benue State, to the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Additionally, the President appointed Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, a former deputy governor of Jigawa State, as chief of staff and Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the House of Representatives, as deputy chief of staff.
