World Drug Day: Peter Obi blames leadership failure for high rate of abuse

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has blamed the high rate of drug abuse, poverty and frustration, peer-group pressure among the youths and the high rate of unemployment in the country on leadership failure. Obi was reacting to a report by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime in Nigeria, indicating that 14.4% of citizens aged between 15 and 64 abuse drugs said is significantly higher than the global average of 5.6%.

World Drug Day: Peter Obi blames leadership failure for high rate of abuse

Peter Obi According to the United Nations, the world drug problem is a complex issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Many people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their physical and mental health and prevent them from accessing the help they need. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognizes the importance of taking a people-centred approach to drug policies, with a focus on human rights, compassion, and evidence-based practices. Obi, a former Anambra State governor in a statement, noted that the attendant health conditions from drug abuse are unimaginable, including an epidemic of mental health cases and incidents of suicidal behaviour among youth. His statement is coming on the heels of the World International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. While praising the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their tireless efforts in combating the drug abuse menace in the country, the Labour Party presidential candidate, in a statement via his verified Twitter handle on Monday, said more needs to be done by the government in rescuing the youths from a further slide into drug addiction. “On this International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, we are reminded of the lingering menace of drug abuse among our youths and the need to take consistent actions to defeat it. “A report by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime in Nigeria indicates that 14.4% of Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 years abuse drugs. This is significantly higher than the global average of 5.6%. “The leadership failure in the country, high rate of poverty and frustration, peer-group pressure among the youths, high rate of unemployment etc, are some of the main factors fuelling drugs and substance abuse among the youths. “The attendant health conditions that result from drug abuse are unimaginable. They include an epidemic of mental health cases and incidents of suicidal behaviour among youth. While we appreciate the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their tireless efforts in combating the drug abuse menace in the country, more needs to be done by the government in rescuing the youths – our productive workforce from a further slide into drug addiction. “By not stigmatising our people who have fallen into drug addiction, and putting measures in place to prevent more people from getting caught in the deadly web, we will gradually stamp out this societal ill. “I have always maintained that the New Nigeria will be anchored on our youth population and productivity. We must ensure that our youths are free from all forms of drug abuse and trafficking in illicit substances,” Obi said.

Pastor Effa speaks on failed election prophecies, blames CAN

Pastor Effa speaks on failed election prophecies, blames CAN

The Senior Pastor of World Royal City Church in Asokoro, Abuja, Effa Emmanuel expresses his view on the failed prophecies regarding the 2023 general elections, stating that they lacked divine inspiration. The preacher made this known to journalists during a religious conference held in Abuja. Pastor Effa speaks on failed election prophecies, blames CANThe four major presidential candidates for the 2023 elections. It would be recalled that numerous religious leaders made prophetic declarations about the potential outcome of the upcoming 2023 elections, but many of these predictions proved to be inaccurate. Pastor Emmanuel clarified that these flawed prophecies were a result of being humanly conceived rather than being divinely inspired. “We have CAN and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). I think the leaders of these bodies should have the responsibility of calling erring pastors to order so that we don’t have confusion in the house. “When Paul was speaking, I think to the Corinthians, he said if anyone has a prophecy, one should prophesize at a time, while others should judge. Prophecy is not a recipe for confusion. God is not an author of confusion,” he stated.

Effa Emmanuel, Senior Pastor of World Royal City Church

Effa Emmanuel, Senior Pastor of World Royal City Church Acknowledging that any clergy member who delivers prophecies based on personal imagination is merely expressing their own thoughts, the cleric emphasized the importance of regulating such prophecies. He urged the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to take responsibility for discerning between false and authentic prophecies.  “If you are inspired by the devil of course you’re a prophet but not a prophet of God. But there are also prophets of God, who speak from God. And if you speak from God, one sign that you are speaking from God is that it comes to pass. If it doesn’t come to pass, then you are not speaking from God. “My take is that CAN and PFN should be able to regulate the house because the church is a house. We should be able to speak with one voice. And then the leaders of the organisations should be able to decipher who is really speaking and representing the voice of God so that we won’t have this rancour and disorder that we’ve had so far,” he added.

Guardiola blames Manchester City’s defeat to Tottenham on ‘exhausting trip to London’

GistReel

Pep Guardiola has offered an “unusual excuse” on why Manchester City suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur during a Premier League match on Sunday, February 5. Guardiola blames Manchester City's defeat to Tottenham on 'exhausting trip to London' Harry Kane’s 15th-minute goal which made him the top scorer for Tottenham, was enough to seal their defeat over Manchester City. Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Guardiola suggested that his players had been affected by the trip to north London. He said; Guardiola blames Manchester City's defeat to Tottenham on 'exhausting trip to London' “We are an attractive team. Our teams are always good, we try to go forward and be generous for our fans. Sometimes it doesn’t work, but I cannot complain much. When you win four Premier Leagues in five years we cannot complain much about what we have done and the way we have done it. “We try to continue to do it and improve the things that will help us in the future. But we go back to Manchester. Coming to London is like going to, I don’t know, northern Europe. It is 4 hours 20 minutes, 4 hours and a half to get to a hotel. It’s so exhausting to come to London, I’m sorry. We need to come back to Manchester and prepare for the game against Aston Villa.”

Al-Nassr's coach, Rudi Garcia blames Ronaldo after defeat to Al-Ittihad

“One of the things that changed the course of the match was Cristiano’s missed opportunity in the first half. “I congratulate Al-Ittihad. They presented a much better first half than us, and we played a good second half, but unfortunately we were not able to adjust the result. It’s true that we regret losing the Super Cup, but we are still the first in the league.” Garcia’s blunt verdict capped a miserable night for Ronaldo, who was taunted by Al-Ittihad fans chanting the name of his iconic rival Lionel Messi as he arrived the pitch.
