INEC announces date for fresh elections in 59 polling units

Following issues of irregularities and violence, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared fresh elections in 59 polling units within the Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State. The Commission confirmed the rescheduled election is set to take place next Saturday, November 18, 2023. This decision was disclosed in a statement on Sunday night by the INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna. It was reported that certain polling locations in Kogi experienced a suspension of the election due to completed result sheets prior to the voting commencement. INEC clarified that this action doesn’t compromise its dedication to investigating the trail of personnel and materials to identify any involvement in undermining the process, promising appropriate sanctions as necessary. “The most critical incident occurred in nine out of 10 Wards in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area (LGA). “ Election in the other nine Wards (Eni, Okibo, Okesi, Ileteju, Aiyeromi, Ugugu, Obinoyin, Obatgben and Oturu) involving 59 Polling Units and 15,136 registered voters remain suspended,” part of the statement read. The commission said it acted “In line with Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Clause 59 of INEC Regulations and Guidelines on the Conduct of Elections 2022, a fresh election will be held on Saturday 18th November 2023 in the affected Polling Units.”

"European Union lied in its report on 2023 elections" ― FG Tinubu

The Federal Government has rejected the European Union Elections Observation Mission (EU-EOM) report on the 2023 general elections in the country. The government described it as a reflection of a plan to discredit the election, especially the presidential election won by President Bola Tinubu.

"European Union lied in its report on 2023 elections" ― FG Tinubu

Mr Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, on Sunday in Abuja. “Sometimes in May, we alerted the nation, through a press statement, to the plan by a continental multi-lateral institution to discredit the 2023 general elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission. “The main target was the presidential election, clearly and fairly won by the then-candidate of All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “While we did not mention the name of the organisation in the said statement, we made it abundantly clear to Nigerians how this foreign institution had been unrelenting in its assault on the credibility of the electoral process, the sovereignty of our country and on our ability as a people to organise ourselves. “We find it preposterous and unconscionable that in this day and age, any foreign organisation of whatever hue can continue to insist on its own yardstick and assessment as the only way to determine the credibility and transparency of our elections,” he stated. Alake said that the submission of the organisation’s report has shown that it was the machinations of the European Union to sustain its unfounded bias and claims on the election outcomes. He asserted that the 2023 general elections, especially the presidential election won by Tinubu, were credible, free, fair and the best-organised general elections in Nigeria since 1999. “There is no substantial evidence provided by the European Union or any foreign and local organisation that is viable enough to impeach the integrity of the 2023 election outcomes. “It is worth restating that the limitation of EU final assessment and conclusions on our elections was made very bare in the text of the press conference addressed by the Head of its Electoral Observation Mission, Barry Andrews. “While addressing journalists in Abuja on the so-called final report, Andrews noted that EU-EOM monitored the pre-election and post-election processes in Nigeria from January 11 to April 11, 2023, as an INEC accredited election monitoring group. “Within this period, EU-EOM observed the elections through 11 Abuja-based analysts, and 40 election observers spread across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” according to him. He stressed that: “With the level of the personnel deployed, which was barely an average of one person per state, we wonder how EU-EOM independently monitored elections in over 176,000 polling units across Nigeria. “We would like to know and even ask EU, how it reached the conclusions in the submitted final report with the very limited coverage of the elections by their observers who, without doubt, relied more on rumours, hearsay, cocktails of prejudiced and uninformed social media commentaries and opposition talking heads. “We are convinced that what EU-EOM called final report on our recent elections is a product of a poorly done desk job that relied heavily on few instances of skirmishes in less than 1000 polling units out of over 176,000 where Nigerians voted on election day.” Alake said that the report was to merely sustain the same premature denunciation stance contained in EU’s preliminary report released in March. “We strongly reject, in its entirety, any notion and idea from any organisation, group and individual remotely suggesting that the 2023 election was fraudulent. “Our earlier position that the technology-aided 2023 general elections were the most transparent and best organised elections since the return of civil rule in Nigeria has been validated by all non-partisan foreign and local observers such are the African Union, ECOWAS, Commonwealth Observer Mission and the Nigerian Bar Association. “Unlike EU-EOM that deployed fewer than 50 observers, the Nigerian Bar Association that sent out over 1000 observers spread across the entire country for same election gave a more holistic and accurate assessment of the elections in their own report. “NBA, an organisation of eminent lawyers and an important voice within the civic space, reported that 91.8 per cent of Nigerians rated the conduct of the national and state elections as credible and satisfactory. Any election that over 90% of the citizens considered transparent should be celebrated anywhere in the world,” Alake added. He noted that the INEC, through its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mr Festus Okoye, had come out to defend the integrity of the election it conducted by rejecting the false narratives in the EU report. “It is also gratifying that the electoral umpire, as an institution that is open to learning and continuous improvements, has also committed to taking on board more ideas, innovation and reforms that will further enhance the integrity and credibility of our electoral process. “As a country, we have put the elections behind us. President Tinubu is facing the arduous task of nation-building, while those who have reasons to challenge the process continue to do so through the courts. “In just one month in office, Nigerians appear satisfied with the decisive leadership of President Tinubu and the manner he is redirecting the country to the path of fiscal sustainability and socio-economic reforms. “We urge the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of our country and allow Nigeria to breathe,” the statement read in part.

Tonto Dikeh vows never to stop competing in elections until she wins

She made this know during an interview with journalists in Abuja at the GOTNI national leadership conference, which was organized by the National Leadership Centre under the theme of “Leadership for Sustainability.” In her words, “One of the things I learnt (in contesting the election) is resilience and never giving up. I know after four years, they will forget about me and that, ‘she is not going to come back.’ But I am going to come back. Every four years, I am going to come back. I will come back and I will be in their faces. I will be coming back to the contest. “My chances (of becoming governor) are high and slim because politics is dirty. It’s not going to be free and fair. (Nyesom) Wike’s candidate didn’t win free and fair. So I don’t expect politics to be free and fair, but I expect that, as someone said, having a lion’s heart requires taking the lion’s share. “I won’t care what they think about my position, I will keep having the lion’s share, whether it is my personal life or politics, I am here to stay and they have no choice but to accept it.” She believes that Nigerian youths are in great need of leadership, particularly at a time when they are collectively striving for a better Nigeria and more prosperous life.

“Some politicians lost elections because they didn’t have money to share”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says that many politicians lost the elections because they didn’t have available money to share. According to the EFCC, due to the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a lot of politicians did not have enough cash to share with the voters during their campaigns. EFCC Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity of the antigraft agency made this disclosure while speaking at an event. According to him, many politicians lost during the elections, because they did not have money to share to electorates. He stated that the naira redesign has been able to prevent corrupt politicians from buying votes. “The violence during elections was caused by the unavailability of cash which was the CBN’s naira redesign policy because politicians could not buy votes. Some politicians lost elections in their strongholds which could not have happened because they didn’t have the cash to share.” Uwujaren said.

"28 people died in 2023 elections but 800 in 2011"

President-elect, Bola Tinubu has disclosed that about 28 people died during the 2023 General elections as compared to the 2011 elections.

This comment was made during the Parley held with the international media at the National Press Centre Washington D.C, United States, Wednesday, April 12, 2023, by representatives of the President-elect, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu – Mr. Festus Keyamo, who is the Chief spokesperson and minister of State, Labour, Mr. Sunday Dare, minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, assistant principal spokesperson. While addressing the press, the spokespersons of President-elect, Tinubu highlighted the results of the elections while touching on some casualties that occurred during the elections.  In his words, Mr. Festus Keyemo said; “Whilst we look forward to an era when there would be no single casualty during elections in Nigeria, however, the statistics show that 2023 recorded the lowest casualty rates ever. During the 1964/65 elections about 200 deaths were recorded as a result of election violence; the 1993 election recorded 100 deaths; the 1999 election recorded 80 deaths; the 2003 polls recorded 100 deaths and the 2007 polls recorded 300 deaths. “The 2011 polls recorded 800 deaths, the 2015 polls recorded 100 deaths and the 2019 polls recorded 150 deaths. However, the 2023 polls recorded no more than 28 deaths as a result of election violence. So, the claim that this is the “worst” election so far is totally unfounded.” However, some Nigerians have expressed anger towards the comparison made. @Adewale johnson commented; “So he is justifying the killing??? Let be on record that Tinubu is saying this We will refer to this Twitter in years to come”. @Nath also said; “The 800 people died because of one man. Now we compare deaths”. @Anthony also wrote: “He said the death is not enough I’m done “. @Stanley: “Is dying part of an electoral process since we now compare deaths?”. @Folarin_Bobo: “So it should be a competition….. useless people.”

The president said this at an event in Dutse, Jigawa State, on Thursday, April 6, 2023. As per a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari said: “It is a testament to the maturity of our democracy and to the amazing sophistication of the voter. What shocked me was that the ordinary citizen who is usually underrated has made the point of his political understanding of things. Assumption is always that you are Governor for eight years and you go to the Senate to crown the career. No one should underrate the Nigerian voter anymore. Politics will be more difficult, henceforth.”

"They took the glory meant for God and gave it to a human“ — Rev. Mbaka on outcome of presidential elections

Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka, a Nigerian Catholic priest popularly known as Father Mbaka, has expressed his thoughts about the Nigerian presidential elections.

Rev ejike mbaka

According to him, the glory that was meant for God was given to the Labour Party by Nigerians during the elections. He went on to explain that people even referred to the father, mother, and child in the Labour Party logo as “God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”, which he believes is a form of blasphemy. Father Mbaka expressed his disappointment that Nigerians chose to give glory to a human instead of God, which he believes has brought the anger of God upon the country.

“They took the glory meant for God and gave to a human, so the anger of God befell us,” Mbaka told his members. He further knelt at the altar to ask for God’s forgiveness and urged his members to interpret his message as they deem fit. Watch the video below:
