President Bola Tinubu has narrated an experience he will never forget as a young taxi driver in the United States. This was revealed as he shared his humble beginning in a biography published on the back page of a national daily where he revealed that a naval officer once slapped him for overcharging him unintentionally.

President Bola TinubuThe biography titled, ‘Tinubu: My life as gypsy cab driver in the US’, was authored by Mike Awoyinfa, a seasoned journalist. Tinubu, in the story, said he worked as unlicensed taxi driver in Chicago, the US picking passengers from the airport to their destinations. The president said the driving job was meant to sustain him financially before he went to school. He narrated, “We got an unregistered used car commonly called Gypsy, which we ran as a taxi. We operated at the airport where we picked passengers, and not anywhere else, like the hotel because it was forbidden for unlicensed cab drivers to do so. “We did that for a while to raise some money. Bolaji went to Tennessee, while I headed for Chicago. “I was supposed to have started schooling in April. I deferred it till September in order to have more money. Immediately I got to Chicago, I went straight to Richard Daley College. It was very interesting. “I was able to pay for my apartment and tuition fees at Chicago State University. I supplemented that by doing different menial jobs like door guard and security man.” Speaking further about the incident, he said the naval officer he carried responded with a slap on his face because he overcharged him, as his destination was nearby. “As a cab driver, one experience I will never forget was when I over-charged a naval officer returning to the country. It was not intentional,” Tinubu said. “Apparently, I didn’t know the direction. There was no GPRS in those days to locate directions. So, he gave me the direction to his house in a Virginia suburb. “I gave him the price and the man responded with a slap to my face. He said I should know the correct price to charge to the location he mentioned. He slapped me and gave me the money.” Source: Daily Trust

“After leaving office I’ll only visit Kaduna if it becomes necessary”

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has said that after handing over to the incoming government on May 29, he will only visit the North-West state if it becomes necessary. The Kaduna state Governor said this at a policy conversation and book launch in Abuja on Tuesday, May 9.

El-Rufai further revealed that he won’t be returning to his former position as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory even if offered. He said; “I have done my job, I’m done, I don’t look back. In fact when I left FCT, the only time I visited FCT was in 2016 when my secondary school classmate was appointed the minister and he said he wanted to see me, so I went there. “Once I leave a job, I don’t look back. If I leave Kaduna in 19 days, I will only visit if it becomes necessary.

“So, I don’t think about the FCT. I’ve done my bit. I don’t comment on the performance of those that came after me. “Even if offered, I’m not coming to Abuja. As I say, I never repeat class and there are many young people I know that I can recommend that would do even better job than I did as minister of FCT. “I’m too old for this. I’m too old for demolition, get a young man with blood in his veins or a young woman.”

Dino Melaye, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 11 Kogi governorship poll, says he would run an inclusive government if elected into office. In a statement released on Saturday by Melaye’s media team, the PDP candidate spoke during a visit to the palace of Abdulrazaq Isa Koto, Ohimege Igu of Koton Karfi.

The former senator representing Kogi West said he would run the state with “fear of God” if elected. Melaye added that he would be “a governor for all” regardless of ethnic group. “As you are aware, His Royal Majesty, in the space of 4 years as senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I did 19 projects in your Kogi LGA. I have a very special relationship with Kogi and by the grace of God, when elected as governor, I will focus attention on the needs of our people, particularly the ecological challenges in this area,” the PDP candidate said. “We are not unaware that the major business in this area is agriculture, trading and transportation. We shall make these ventures the focus of our administration by providing incentives that will encourage our people. “I will be a Kogi governor that will govern our state with the fear of God. I will run an all-inclusive governance not as an Igala, Ebira, Okun, Kakanda, Bassa, Koto or Nupe governor but as a governor for all under the guidance of the Almighty God. “I congratulate you as the leader of the Kogi west traditional rulers and I pray that under your leadership, Kogi West will produce a governor. I, therefore, seek your blessings as we go into the polls.” On April 16, Melaye won the PDP primary for the Kogi gubernatorial election, defeating Idoko Ilonah, his closest challenger, by 189 votes. He will face Ahmed Ododo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the governorship election scheduled to take place on November 11.

Anti-Tinubu flight passenger is mentally ill — Lawyer clarifies

Anti-Tinubu man, Mr Obiajulu Uja, who was booted out of an aircraft by security personnel at Abuja Airport on Friday has been identified as mentally ill.

His lawyer, Barr. Ejike Ugwu stated that Obiajulu is mentally ill and was earlier chased out of a hotel in Abuja before booking a flight to Lagos from three airlines. According to Ugwu, despite his condition, the police have yet to offer medical assistance when he visited the suspect at the Airport Police Division. “Obiajulu is not in the right state of mind; before he boarded the flight, he was chased away from a hotel in Abuja because of his mental state. “He even booked three different flights for the Lagos trip. He booked Aero, Dana and Ibom Air. He had the three tickets for the same trip. So, there is no doubt that he is mentally challenged,” Ugwu said. The lawyer stated that every effort made to make the police see reasons to allow the anti-Tinubu suspect access to medical care had proved abortive. “As I speak to you, both the IPO handling the case and the DPO of the Police Division are nowhere to be found. And the suspect’s legs are all swollen now because of the several beatings he received at the Airport. He is critically sick right now.

“All I am asking for is that he should at least be taken to the police clinic. I have also made efforts to reach the Force PRO but he did not take my calls,” he added.
