Popular stand-up comedian, AY Makun, recently opened on being called a witch, the challenges he faced in his career and the misunderstandings with his fellow comedian, Julius Agwu. In an interview, AY recalled the time when Julius Agwu was going through severe health issues, and he stood by him, offering support and help.

However, to his surprise, Julius later accused AY of being involved in witchcraft and using evil powers against him. AY expressed his disappointment over the accusations, given the kindness he had shown his colleague in times of need. During the interview, AY also addressed rumors that had circulated about him in the industry, particularly those spread by his former boss, Basketmouth. Acknowledging that comedy is subjective, AY humbly admitted that he might not be considered the funniest comedian in the world. Nevertheless, he credited the numerous rejections, hatred, insults, and wickedness he faced in the profession for shaping his journey to success. AY also reflected on a time when he was denied the opportunity to perform at the prestigious comedy show, “Nights of A Thousand Laughs.” It was this very rejection that sparked the idea for his own show, which eventually became a massive success.

Throughout the interview, AY maintained a positive outlook and expressed his gratitude to his fans and supporters who believed in him and helped him achieve his dreams. He emphasized that despite the conflicts and hurdles faced, he continues to focus on bringing joy and laughter to his audience through his unique brand of comedy. After their parents passed away, AY claimed he saw himself and his siblings, including renowned event planner Lanre Makun and well-known fashion designer Yomi “Casual” Makun, through school. He said: “I came home to ask for money that I needed for school, and the money wasn’t available. And then, we had lost my dad. So, she [my mum] was seeing me off, she was practically walking me on the street and encouraging me. She said, ‘You know Yomi is looking up to you, Lanre is looking up to you. Your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything funny, don’t be a part of any cult.” “But the money dem never give me o wey I find come o but dem dey encourage me. ‘I know that it’s difficult, but then, just know that your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything stupid. God will do it at the right time. Do you know how touching it will be getting all that messages from your mum, and then you get a call while in school that you’ve lost your mum? “So, all of that moulded me like, okay, this is going to make me live a certain way of life. That was what gave me the boost to work extra hard to see myself through school, see my younger ones through school. It was her message. Her message was mor like, ‘Your younger ones are looking up to you.’ That message was what gave me the foundation of everything that makes me stand out today.”

This had sparked mixed reactions from netizens some of whom had gone to the comment section to denigrate him for taking award from an administration they had critiqued. Reacting to this, AY noted that receiving an award is the highest honor a person can get, and this has nothing to do with the person who confers it as the vital point is that he has contributed his own quota to nation building.

He maintained that his allegiance is first and foremost to Nigeria and not to a president or any political party. AY wrote: “Those of you shaming or asking me to reject ‘A National Honour’ are clearly missing a vital point. Our country is bigger and more important than any president or political party awarding it. A national honour is the highest recognition anyone can get for his or her contributions to nation building. So my allegiance is to a country where i have contributed my own quota, and i am more than happy to be rewarded by the same nation” Those of you shaming or asking me to reject ‘A National Honour’ are clearly missing a vital point.
