A young Nigerian man identified as Yaya Abba has sparked conversations by suggesting that a budget of N1.4 million is sufficient for a standard wedding ceremony in Nigeria. The young man, through a series of tweets, provided a detailed breakdown of how the money could be allocated for various aspects of a traditional marriage. According to the breakdown, Yaya Abba proposed allocating N200,000 for the payment of dowry commonly known as the bride price.
He further recommended allocating N500,000 for house rent. One notable item on Abba’s budget was the allocation of N700,000 for “Lefe,” a Hausa marriage tradition involving the purchase of expensive gifts for the bride. In his Twitter post, Yaya Abba expressed his belief that this budget of N1.4 million is sufficient for an average Nigerian wedding unless the intention is to show off. The man wrote; “Dowry = 200k House Rent = 500k Lefe = 700k Total = 1.4 million Unless you’re trying to show off, N1.4 million naira is enough to get you married as an average Nigerian.” See below;
