Reason why report on Mohbad’s death probe delayed– Police

The Lagos State Police Command has replied to complaints about the delayed report of the investigation results of the late Mohbad. In a press conference on Thursday, the pro-democracy group Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) demanded that the Lagos State Police Command release the late singer’s autopsy report, expressing dissatisfaction with the police’s prolonged silence as unfair to the public. The organization encouraged police to investigate cyberbullying directed at Wunmi, Mohbad’s wife, and Liam, the murdered child. They stressed that anyone caught in the act would face serious ramifications. When approached by the PUNCH correspondent on Thursday, police spokesman Hundeyin stated that the command had not received the pathologists’ report on Mohbad’s autopsy.

SERAP files lawsuit against Tinubu over failure to probe missing subsidy funds

SERAP files lawsuit against Tinubu over failure to probe missing subsidy payments

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu over the failure to probe the allegations of missing USD$2.1 billion and N3.1 trillion in public funds of oil revenues and budgeted as fuel subsidy payments and unaccounted for between 2016 and 2019. Recall that the Auditor-General of the Federation in the 2016 and 2019 annual reports alleged that the public funds are missing. SERAP files lawsuit against Tinubu over failure to probe missing subsidy paymentsPresident of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu On behalf of SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, Ms Adelanke Aremo, Ms Valentina Adegoke, and Ayomide Johnson, at the Federal High Court in Lagos, said SERAP “is seeking an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to promptly probe allegations that USD$2.1 billion and N3.1 trillion public funds are missing and unaccounted for between 2016 and 2019.” SERAP also sought, “An order of mandamus to compel President Tinubu to direct the anti-corruption agencies to promptly probe fuel subsidy payments made by governments since the return of democracy in 1999, name and shame and prosecute suspected perpetrators, and to recover any proceeds of crimes.” “Ann order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to use any recovered proceeds of crime as palliatives to address the impact of the subsidy removal on poor Nigerians, and to put in place mechanisms for transparency and accountability in the oil sector.” In the suit, SERAP, argued that: “The allegations that US$2.1 billion and N3.1 trillion of public funds are missing and unaccounted amount to a fundamental breach of national anticorruption laws and the country’s international obligations including under the UN Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party. “The Tinubu government has constitutional and international legal obligations to get to the bottom of these allegations and ensure accountability for these serious crimes against the Nigerian people. “Directing and compelling President Tinubu to promptly probe, name and shame and bring to justice the perpetrators and to recover any missing public funds would advance the right of Nigerians to restitution, compensation and guarantee of non-repetition.” The suit, read in part: “There will be no economic growth or sustainability without accountability for the human rights crimes. “Poor and socio-economically vulnerable Nigerians should not be made to continue to pay the price for the stealing of the country’s oil wealth while state and non-state actors pocket public funds. “Investigating and prosecuting the allegations, and recovering any missing public funds would serve the public interest, ensure justice and accountability, and end the entrenched impunity of perpetrators.” “According to the audited reports between 2016 and 2019 by the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) failed to remit N663,896,567,227.58 into the Federation Account. The Auditor-General fears that the money may be missing.” “The NNPC also reportedly failed to account for the allocation of crude oil to refineries in 2019. 107,239,436.00 barrels of crude oil were lifted as domestic crude without any document. The Auditor-General fears that the crude valued at N55,891,009,960.63 may have been diverted,” among others.”

Photo credit: Google Source: Google In a statement that was released by the Head of the Fayemi Media Office, Abuja, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, stated emphatically, that “no such allegation was raised during his conversation” with officials of the anti-graft agency. According to the statement, the visit of Kayode Fayemi to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in Ilorin, Kwara State, was to answer a few questions about a petition filed by some group of people who wanted to tarnish his image. The statement read, “We would like to address the concerns surrounding the invitation and subsequent visit of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “Last month, Dr. Fayemi received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC regarding a money laundering petition against him. It was during the height of the preparations for the change of government, with many activities and programs lined up as part of the event. “A key member of the APC, Dr Fayemi was already committed to playing important roles at these events and his non-appearance would have impacted them significantly. Understanding the significance of his commitments at that time, Dr. Fayemi duly notified the EFCC of his willingness to cooperate but requested a more suitable date for his appearance.” It added, “We firmly believe that Dr. Fayemi’s visit has provided answers to the agency’s inquiries regarding the petition. However, should there be a need for further clarification, Dr. Fayemi stands ready to cooperate fully. “We wish to note, too, that contrary to the news that made the rounds about a purported N4b fraud case against Dr. Fayemi, no such allegation was raised in his conversation with the EFCC. “All he did was respond to a frivolous petition from a faceless group, the so-called Ekiti Patriotic Coalition, which we strongly believed is a front for some anti-Fayemi politicians, who are trying to soil the former governor’s good name and image.”

Nigerians who wrote an exam at a computer-based test (CBT) centre in Ibadan, are now being investigated by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) following speculation of their result being “fraudulent or not correct”. The NMC said Pearson VUE which runs the computer-based Test of Competence (ToC) to assess the skills and knowledge of people applying to join its register from overseas, recently raised the alarm of “anomalous data” at one of its third-party CBT centres in Ibadan. The statement added that while 1,970 candidates took their CBT at this centre, only 512 are on the NMC register. Candidates who participated in the exam at the centre have been asked to retake the test. The statement read; “A total of 512 people on our register (around five percent of all the professionals on our register who qualified in Nigeria) took their CBT at this test centre.

“We’re writing to them to set out what’s happened and to tell them we’re opening cases to determine whether or not they gained fraudulent or incorrect entry to the register. “More people have applied to join the register but are not yet on it, therefore they can’t practise as a nurse or midwife. We’ve paused their applications. “We’re writing to these applicants to ask them to retake the test, and to request more information that we’ll use to make a final decision about their applications. “Pearson VUE has reviewed all data relating to the NMC’s CBT from every test site globally, and there is no evidence of similar activity at any other site. “Our paramount concern is to maintain the integrity of the register to protect the public. At the same time, it’s critical we approach any investigations about individuals objectively and transparently, avoiding any unfair discrimination.”
