A 56-year-old man identified as Aminu Abubakar has been arrested by Adamawa police command for allegedly beating his wife to death. Aminu reportedly assaulted his wife, Nana Fadimatu, after being told that she had concluded plans to leave him and marry another man in a neighbouring community. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Suleiman Nguroje said the incident happened at about 10pm on Friday, May 5.

Nguroje said Aminu who lives in Lelewaji community in Shagari Phase 2 Estate, Yola South Local Government Area, attacked Fadimatu with a hard object which knocked her out. She was later pronounced dead. The police spokesperson said the suspect was arrested by police officers from Shagari Divisional Headquarters after Fadimatu’s intended new husband, Mahmud Rufai of Shagari Annex, Yola South, filed a complaint.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed receiving a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asking it to investigate suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Yunusa Ari over his role in the state’s governorship election.

Ari was suspended by the electoral commission after he declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru as the winner while results were yet to be fully collated. The police have now confirmed that they received INEC’s letter demanding Yunusa-Ari’s probe. NPF’s spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement; “The Nigeria Police Force is in receipt of a letter dated 18th April 2023 from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) detailing the alleged impropriety of the actions of one Barr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), during the recently concluded supplementary elections and called on the Police to investigate and possibly prosecute the REC for his actions. “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR, has directed an investigative team to work in collaboration with the INEC to expedite action on the contents of the letter. “The Inspector-General of Police while expressing the commitment of the NPF to upholding democratic values, assures Nigerians and the international community, that the Police will leave no stone unturned in unraveling the remote causes of the unwholesome conduct of the REC as well as ensure that all persons fingered in the course of investigations are brought to book.”

INEC has directed the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa, to stay away from the state office.

In a letter dated April 17, 2023, and addressed to the Adamawa State REC, the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony directed the administrative secretary to take full charge. “I hereby convey the Commission’s decision that you (Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Adamawa State should stay away from the commission’s office in Adamawa State immediately until further notice. The Administrative Secretary has been directed to take full charge of INEC, Adamawa State with immediate effect,” the letter reads in part. Recall that the REC on Sunday morning, April 16, controversially declared Aishatu Dahiru Binani, the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of the Adamawa state governorship election while the results collation process was not completed. This comes as APC’S candidate, Senator Aishatu Dahiru popularly known as Binani scored 390, 275 while the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of PDP, polled 421,524. INEC declared the election inconclusive due to the margin of votes. They are now collating the final results for the announcement of the winner. With this result, the APC candidate Aisha Binani has eight LGAs while Gov Umaru Fintiri has won 13 LGAs from the 21 in the state. The APC agents, who are displeased by this have been advised to take to the appropriate channel for their grievances.

Her PDP closest rival scored 406,617 votes, while the senator garnered 409,909 votes, leading to her victory. Following the election of Aisha Dahiru Binani as governor, she made history as Nigeria’s second female Governor, with the first being Dame Virginia Etiaba of Anambra state, from November 2006 to February 2007.
