Meet George Akume, Tinubu’s new SGF – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made several major appointments since his office on May 29, 2023. On Friday 2nd June 2023, President Tinubu appointed George Akume as the new Secretary to the Federal Government.

He earned a Bachelor of Sociology degree from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State in 1978. In 1986, he received a Master’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations (MLR) from the same university. From May 1999 to May 2007, Akume was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Benue State. George Akume was the first Benue State governor to serve two consecutive terms. In addition, the now-defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chose him to represent the Benue North West senatorial constituency in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a senator. He then served as Senate Minority Leader from June 2011 until June 2015. During his brief time in the Senate, the former governor chaired the Senate Committee on the Army. Senator Orke Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) beat him in the 2019 Senate elections. On August 21, 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed George as Minister of Special Obligations and Intergovernmental Affairs.

According to the statement, the President made the announcement at a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) at the Presidential Villa’s Council Chamber in Abuja. Former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Akume as Minister of Special Duties. The Spokesman Said ‘”President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced Friday 2 June 2023, in Abuja the appointment of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, as Chief of Staff, and Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, a former Deputy Governor of Jigawa State, as Deputy Chief of Staff.” During a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum, the President also named the former Benue State Governor and former Minister of Special Duties.
